Morning sickness impacts 4 of every 5 women. The signs and severity of morning sickness vary from person to person. Some women experience morning sickness so severe that they are unable to work or carry on with their daily routines. This article talks about three ways to end morning sickness and regain control of your life.

Morning sickness begins roughly the fourth week of pregnancy and normally stops around the 14th and sixteenth weeks of pregnancy. Morning sickness can be an extremely difficult part of pregnancy, especially when it is severe.

So, how can you end morning sickness? 3 Common methods used toend morning sicknessare:

Ginger – Ginger has been used for centuries by medical professionals to heal a range of conditions including nausea from morning sickness and motion sickness. You can use ginger in a variety of forms to treat morning sickness, these include ginger tea, powdered or capsules.

When using gingerfor morningsickness, be sure not to consume more than 1 gram per day.

Eat Smaller Portions – When your belly is empty, sensations of nausea intensify because of increased production of acids in the stomach. To avoid this consume small meals all throughout the day rather than 3 large meals.

If regular foods make you nauseous try eating soups, broths & crackers. In addition, drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

Acupressure – Acupressure is a kind of massage that triggers the body’s key pressure to promote healing. For morning sickness this pressure point is located on the inside of the wrist. Acupressure bands are designed to be worn on the wrist and put gentle pressure on this point. This is why they work so well for getting rid of morning sickness.

These are three popular remedies which are used to end morning sickness. However, the real key toend morning sicknessis to try different things until you find the one remedy or combination of remedies that relieves your morning sickness.

    • ANSWER:
      Thalidomide

Thalidomide, which is also known as Thalomid, is a drug used to fight aggressive cancers, particularly those that have metastasized, or spread.

      Purpose

There are many studies, either in progress or recently completed, that suggest thalidomide can slow or stop the spread of cancer of the brain, breast, colon, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow). Research studies that consider the benefit of thalidomide in treating other cancers are multiplying rapidly. The use of the drug in cancer therapy is likely to increase.

      Description

Thalidomide was first introduced in 1957 primarily as a tranquilizer, a medication prescribed particularly for imparting drowsiness and sleep. Then, it was given to pregnant women to provide them with relief from morning sickness. Soon after being prescribed to pregnant women, thalidomide was linked to death or severe disabilities in newborns. Some children who had been exposed to thalidomide while in the womb (in utero) failed to develop limbs or had very short limbs. Others were born blind or deaf or with other physical problems.

The same action of thalidomide that harms babies may make it useful as a powerful cancer fighter. Thalidomide interferes with the formation of blood vessels. It is called an antiangiogenic drug because angiogenesis refers to the formation of blood vessels. Studies in 2003 reported that thalidomide may use signal repression or have immunosuppression capabilities. This means it can act on the body’s natural immune responses.

Cancers that spread have a lot of blood vessels (are highly vascularized). Thus, when cancer cells are not nourished by a blood supply, they die. One way to stop the spread of cancer is to stop the formation of the blood vessels that carry nourishment to the cancer cells, and that is what thalidomide is thought to do. Researchers also are interested in other activities of thalidomide, particularly the ones that make it capable of eliminating skin eruptions, such as sores, or ulcers, in the mouths of patients with AIDS and leprosy.

      Recommended Dosage

Dosages being used depend on the type of cancer being attacked. For example, in one study, to treat multiple myeloma, a starting dose of 200 mg per day was increased to 800 mg per day over a two-week period.

In a colon cancer study, 400 mg per day of thalidomide were given in combination with the anticancer drug irinotecan. The dose of irinotecan was between 300 and 350 mg per day. Used in combination with irinotecan, thalidomide contributed its own cancer-fighting properties and it also seemed to reduce the side effects of irinotecan.

In a trial using thalidomide to treat prostate cancer, both low doses (as low as 200 mg per day) and high doses (as high as 1200 mg per day) were tried. The patients taking high doses fared somewhat better.

      Precautions

The serious threat thalidomide poses to fetuses cannot be overstated. No pregnant woman and no woman who has any chance of becoming pregnant should take thalidomide. (Only women who have had a hysterectomy or who are at the age of menopause and have been in a menopausal state, which is no menses, or periods, for 24 consecutive months, can be considered as having no chance of becoming pregnant.)

Patients taking thalidomide must meet strict criteria for use. Pharmacies that dispense thalidomide must have special registration.

      Side Effects

Besides the extreme risk thalidomide poses to fetuses, it also produces side effects in the person taking the drug. The side effects of thalidomide are much milder than many other anticancer drugs, and because the drug poses less discomfort than other cancer-fighting drugs, it is particularly attractive to oncologists, or physicians who treat cancer patients.

Among the side effects are erratic heartbeat, swelling (edema), digestive upsets of all sorts, including both constipation and diarrhea, pain in back and neck muscles, and skin problems.

      Interactions

Barbiturates, salts, and esters used to encourage sleep, and alcohol increase the effect of thalidomide’s power of sedation. They should not be taken with the drug. Food interferes with the absorption of thalidomide; it should be taken when the stomach is empty.

  13. QUESTION:
    How to stop morning sickness?
i suffer from horrible morning sickness, from when i wake up till about dinner time.. how do you stop it? have u tried something that you found worked?, iv tried dry biscuits but didnt really help.. i know eating constantly works for me but i cant keep eating..

    thanks :)

    x

    • ANSWER:
You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full.

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, eat a couple of soda crackers or a piece of dry toast. Rise slowly, allowing some time for digestion to occur before you get up.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

We all have acupressure points that will react favorably when pressed. Press the correct ones and your morning sickness will be gone. ‘End Morning Sickness’ explains in detail specific spots on your body to tap to find relief.

Heyyy. I am getting morning sickness really bad. I am 7 weeks today. I havent once actually been sick but i keep needing to and feeling sick, non stop for about 3 weeks now, literally every minuite of day AND night. Its making me really down and i cannot go out or anything.
Any advice on how to make it clear up a bit? Cheers x :) x

    • ANSWER:
You can buy some TUMS (they are full of calcium so your doctor will approve), and keep crackers with you. Try not to eat any spicy foods, as they can make it worse. Also, make sure you drink plenty of fluids (especially water).

If you can, eat small meals throughout the day instead of three big meals. This will help keep your stomach full throughout the day (which causes the morning sickness due to empty stomach; especially at night).

  22. QUESTION:
If you have an early miscarriage, how soon does your nausea/morning sickness stop?
I have read that if you have a miscarraige during the first 3 months, then the morning sickness quits abruptly. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this?? How soon does it stop, like over night, over a few days? How can you tell if it is just “going away” and you are feeling better, or if you are possibly having a miscarraige?? And has anyone experienced it just “going away” before 13 weeks is over, and feeling fine?? any input greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
You can’t tell if you are having a miscarriage just by your symtoms of morning sickness going away. That comes and goes as it pleases. In my experience with having miscarriages, it depends on how far along you are. With my fist one, I was at 12 1/2 weeks when I lost my baby and the morning sickness took a few days to go away as far as I remember. I wasn’t thinking too much about it at the time, but I don’t remember being too sick like I was right before I lost it. But then again, I was on a lot of pain killers during that first week. With the last 3 miscarriages, I was only 6 and 8 weeks along when I lost them. I hadn’t had much morning sickness with any of them, so it went away immediately after losing the pregnancies.

  23. QUESTION:
When did the morning sickness stop?
    Hey Everyone,
I just found out I am expecting again. I am about 5 weeks along. I have had some pretty bad morning sickness the last few days. I never had it too bad with my other kids.
When did the morning sickness finally stop through your pregnancy?

    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I feel for you, i really do! My morning sickness lasted until 6 months, if your sickeness becomes extream to the point where you can no longer keep fluids down or you have lost more that 7% of your body weight, you may be suffering from hyperemesis and will need antiemetics! Congratulations on your pregnanxy hun! ;-)

  24. QUESTION:
My wife is pregnant, should I worry when the morning sickness stop before the first 3 months?
my wife is two month pregnant, and she’s been going through all the morning sickness. Now that she doesn’t feel any of those simptoms, she thinks that something is wrong..Should she worry? or is this normal?

    • ANSWER:
No, Morning sickness varies with every person/pregnancy.

I’m not a ‘sicky’ person and with 2 pregnancies was only physically sick twice with each. Some people are sick passed the 3 months, some all the way through.

Unless she was throwing up none stop and wasn’t able to eat etc, I don’t think there’d be cause for concern… Maybe if you’re still concerned you could call nhs24 or speak to a midwife/dr to set your mind at ease.

  25. QUESTION:
Can morning sickness stop before 3 months?
I’m 8 weeks today and morning sickness is kicking my butt. Although some days are better than others,I find myself counting down to my 12 week mark. Do you think the sickness will end before then?

    • ANSWER:
everyone is different. it could stop before 12 weeks or it could keep going. i was hoping mine would stop at 12 weeks too because everyone was telling me by the second trimester it usually stops but it kept going until nearly 20 weeks.
hopefully your lucky and it stops soon i know how horrible it can feel been sick every day.
congrats and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

  26. QUESTION:
Is it normal to have morning sickness straight for 2 weeks, then just stop?
Can the morning sickness just stop like that? Is that a bad sign?
yesterday, I hadn’t really thrown up like I usually do, but about 5 minutes ago I threw up! ugh!

    • ANSWER:
it might of stopped but it will be back guaranteed.
symptoms come and go in pregnancy so dont worry

  27. QUESTION:
How can you stop Morning Sickness?
Now i know its an all day thing and its horrible….and i have been advised that you cant really stop it…does anyone know if there is anything you can eat drink or take to make it feel better…plus i really cant stomach food at the moment and suggestions on what to eat because im starvinggg! xx

    • ANSWER:
You can’t really stop morning sickness, but you can do things to reduce it, and stop it from getting worse:
Stay away from rich, spicy, or sweet foods, as well as fatty or fried foods. Stick mainly to plain foods like bread and water, and try out things like plain pasta, rice, and potatoes.
Keep bland foods with you incase you feel like you can eat something. This will also stop the acid in you stomach from getting angry, which can also make you throw up.
      Drink a lot of water.
Vitamin B6 and doxylamine are supposed to be good, but speak to your doctor about these first to check that they’ll be safe for you and your baby.

Particular foods which are meant to be good are:
Gingery drinks (Ginger tea, Ginger ale)
      Bananas
      Bread
      Rice
      Potatoes
      Citrus fruits
      Try Children’s vitamins
      Cereal
      Jelly
      Fizzy Pop drinks
      Peppermints
      Watermelon

If you feel like you can’t eat anything, then don’t. The best thing to do is to stick to foods which don’t smell bad to you, because it’s you’re body’s way of saying “If you put that in me, I’m going to make you really sick”. Whatever you do though, don’t stop eating all together because remember you are eating for two – it’s best to have even a little bit of food in your tummy than having nothing in there or constantly throwing up. Hope my advice helped :)
Congratulations on your pregnancy, and Good Luck!

  33. QUESTION:
What made you stop having morning sickness?
I am going to the store and would love to know what made you stop being sick

    • ANSWER:
You can’t stop having it, you can help it, though.
      Crackers & Ginger Ale.

      Home Remedies From the Cupboard
Crackers. Crackers are a pregnant woman’s prize possession (food-wise). They are portable, easy to digest, and inexpensive, and in many cases, they nip nausea in the bud. Plain, whole-wheat crackers, pretzels, plain popcorn, or low-salt soda crackers are your best bets. Nibble on them throughout the day and before going to bed. If morning sickness hits full force in the A.M., feed your mouth before your feet touch the cold floor. Better yet, stay in bed nibbling on crackers for several minutes. Sudden transitions from the horizontal to the vertical often trigger nausea, so go easy in the morning.

Potato chips. Perhaps pregnancy is the only time in a woman’s life when potato chips offer a cure…and can be consumed without guilt. For many women, munching on a few chips (note the word “few”) at the first sign of nausea helps dissipate it. If this cure is for you, stick to regular potato chips and stay away from the fat-free varieties that contain Olestra, the fat substitute. Olestra robs yours body of important nutrients, and it is known to cause diarrhea.

Sometimes pregnancy brings about an over-production of saliva, which can make the mother-to-be sick to her stomach. Nibbling on a handful of salt-and-vinegar chips helps dry up the saliva.

As with any junk food, don’t pig out on chips, even if they are a cure. Nibble only when needed. Some women in fact may find this remedy distasteful since fat is hard to digest and can cause increased stomach upset.

  34. QUESTION:
Sudden stop in morning sickness, should I be worried?
I am 7 weeks pregnant and am just getting over the flu. 2 weeks ago I started to get morning sickness where I would be sick 3 or 4 times a day. It seems to have just suddenly stopped. I don’t feel nauseous anymore…

Should I be worried by this? With my son I had quite severe sickness from 6 to 13 weeks.

    Thanks all xx

    • ANSWER:
I am pretty sure its fine, morning sickness is funny, just because you had it during one pregnancy doesnt mean you will have it in all pregnancies. BUT for peace of mind speak to your midwife, and see if you can get a scan just to be sure. No point worrying about it. Peace and Christmas blessings

  35. QUESTION:
when did your morning sickness stop?
currently 7 weeks 2 days and i’m so sick i feel like im going to die. when did your morning sickness stop and your actually began enjoying your pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
The worst part of it was over by about 13 weeks. It was still around until 20 weeks. I’m 23 weeks now and a day or 2 a week, I still get a quick bout of it but it’s tolerable. Once it went away though, different symptoms showed up like heartburn, racing heart, and I’m very uncomfortable in general. However, saying that, I enjoy my pregnancy much more now because I’m showing and all that good stuff so it’s worth it!

  36. QUESTION:
When did your morning sickness stop?
I am suffering really badly with morning sickness to the extent where I can’t go out shopping or anything because I can never tell when I am going to throw up. At what point in your pregnancy did your morning sickness stop helpp lol x

    • ANSWER:
I can understand how you feel. I used to have to pull over while driving down the road just to puke out my door. I stopped around 6 months but a lot of people say it stops around 3 months. Good luck to you.

  37. QUESTION:
How soon after 12 weeks does morning sickness stop?
I’m 12 weeks on friday and it seems that it’s never going to end..

    • ANSWER:
Normally morning sickness stops at around 14 weeks.

However some people are very unlucky and it continues until 20 weeks or even right through the whole pregnancy.

I am 37 weeks pregnant and had it until around 25 weeks and now still get it occasionally.

Try eating a biscuit or toast in the morning before you get out of bed, ginger tea also helps.
I also wore travel sickness wrist bands all day which helps the nausea.

Good Luck, I hope that you feel better soon x

  38. QUESTION:
will my morning sickness stop after i take the first pill of abortion ?
i haven’t eaten in 3 days and if i do i throw up. i have to go to hospital to take the first pill of abortion on wednesday.
the first pill stops the pregnancy from continuing. im havin an abortion because im only 14. no need for the nasty comments ;) .
i havent thought about keeping the baby as on the 13th of march im going into hospital for a lifesaving operation. the doctors wont do the operation if im pregnant.

    • ANSWER:
You should feel relief almost immediately, so by the end of day Wednesday the nausea should stop.

PLUS… Please take care of yourself and don’t let the negative comments get to you. Most of the people who post negative comments really just want to punish women for taking control of their lives. The bible says nothing about abortion and in fact when talking about Judas says, “It would have been better for him not to be born.” Additionally, these people are for the most part uninformed about the function of the body and conception. Almost 2/3 of fertilized eggs never make it past the next menstrual cycle. Additionally, almost any woman who takes the birth control pill has had an abortion if she is functionally fertile and sexually active as the bcp doesn’t stop ovulation. Again, take care of yourself, and my best to you. Good Luck!

i am 5 months pregnant and the other day my mother-in-law was rubbing my belly and i threw up on her. even though she said it was ok i still feel terrible about it =( when will the morning sickness stop

    • ANSWER:
Who knows! Everyone is different. It could last throughout your whole pregnancy, stop after the first trimester, or you could not have it at all. Try to avoid foods you know make you sick or naseous, have some crackers on you at all times, and water. Take along a toothbrush and some toothpaste and mouthwash.. and a bag for the car.

  44. QUESTION:
Is there anything I can take to stop my morning sickness?
Im pregnant and not only do I get morning sickness every morning but sometimes during the day, is there anything I can take? I’m seriously fed up with constantly feeling sick and being sick please, please, please help!!! :)

    • ANSWER:
There is a prescription med that can alleviate your morning sickness (though I’m not sure about eliminating it completely) but you would need a doctor’s prescription and they don’t like to hand it out unless its absolutely necessary (like you’re vomiting so much you’re dehydrating and risking the pregnancy).

The good thing is, for most women, the nausea eases up in the second trimester.

I hope it passes for you quickly.

  45. QUESTION:
Stop/prevent morning sickness in school !?
I’m about 7 weeks pregnant and during my spring break last week my morning/pretty much all day sickness really got bad. I was throwing up everyday but tomorrow I start school again and I need some tips to prevent or stop morning sickness, like foods or certain candies that help! I don’t wanna throw up in class :/

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

If nothing else works, ask your doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help. If you’re really feeling horrible and can’t keep anything down, your doctor may be willing to see you earlier.

      Good luck!

  46. QUESTION:
when did your morning sickness start and stop?
with my son it started at 7 weeks and ended at 14 weeks

i’m 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant today with my 2nd baby and no sickness yet, i have been feeling sicky and the smell of food makes me gag and iv got to hold my nose while feeding my son his weekabix coz of the smell. so maybe its coming soon

when did your morning sickness start and stop?

    • ANSWER:
my nausea and food sensitivity started abouttt 6 weeks and the actual morning sickness/puking started around 9 weeks and ended at about 11 or 12 weeks. I got lucky and didn’t have to deal with it for very long but i’m still really sensitive to food. it cant have too strong of a smell, taste, weird look or texture or else i just cant eat it

  47. QUESTION:
Hi, how to stop morning sickness?
When I found out I was pregnant (2 weeks ago) I am 6 weeks pregnant now and just started this morning sickness, but it is unbearable and I cannot focus properly when I’m studying for my course work. How can I stop with this? Please help :/

    • ANSWER:
      Hope this helps out. Congrats!!

-Avoid warm places as heat can increase the nausea feelings.

-Take naps during the day (but not right after eating). Tiredness plays a big part in morning sickness.

      -Get enough sleep at night.

-Get out of bed slowly in the morning.

-Try eating plain crackers or dry cereal before you get out of bed in the morning.

-Open windows or turn on exhaust fans when cooking and after meals.

-Cooking in the microwave usually produces less odors.

-Ginger in capsules form 250 mg. three times daily can be beneficial. Ginger has long been associated with alleviating nausea. You can also get the benefit of using ginger by chewing on crystallized ginger or sucking on ginger hard candies.

-Silly as it sounds, carry a handkerchief with a few drops of a non nausea causing essential oil (lemon for example) in it and breath through it if you can’t get away from the smell that is bothering you.

-Avoid greasy or spicy foods as they often cause nausea or heartburn.

-Eat what you want when you want it. Your cravings will not lead you the wrong way.

-Have frequent protein snacks. (Low fat meats and seafood, nuts, eggs and beans are high protein.)

-Eat smaller meals every two hours or so.

-Eating something salty before a meal can help you “make it through” a meal.

-Do not drink fluids with your meals.

-Non caffeinated teas like peppermint and ginger can help came nausea.

-Drink small amounts of fluids regularly though out the day to avoid dehydration.

-Do not skip meals if you can help it.

-Try taking your prenatal vitamins later in the day. Pregnancy Plus prenatal vitamins are smaller in size and are less likely to upset your stomach. You may also want to consider taking your prenatal vitamin at night before you go to bed to give it a chance to be absorbed overnight.

-Avoid spicy and fried food – both eating and smelling it can increase your nausea.

-Cold food may have less nausea inducing smells associated with them.

  48. QUESTION:

then the morning after that i felt a little bad then BOOM it all came back just like before. severe. why!!

i thought i was getting better:(

Mine was like that. I had horrible morning sickness and it finally went away at about 9 weeks. Then the other night and the next day, I had it all over again. My blood pressure is never high, but since losing weight, it now runs about 90/64. It also drops easily. Can that be the cause of headaches/lightheadedness?

Is there anything to remedy this? Other than gaining weight again, which I sure don’t want to do.

Thanks.

Both answers above are correct. If you eat something and the headache goes away in 30 minutes or so, it was probably low blood sugar. The low sodium/blood volume issue could be related. By way of prevention and management, if you eat a bit you’ll get salt without addidng it – like a piece of fruit, a tomato juice, or cracker. you may find you need to include small snacks and/or beverages in your total food for the day that will keep your blood sugar/pressure up without gaining back the weight. Rather than adding more food, just spread it out and eat more times more so you don’t get blood sugar ‘blips and drops’ during the day. High fiber, low sugar foods like berries, tomato, salad, cucumber, unsweetened yogurt with fruit, hummus with celery or carrots, etc. will keep your blood sugar even without ruining your weight loss.

For headache relief what you can do besides eating something, drinking something – caffeine makes pain relievers more effective in treating a headache. A cup of tea or coffee or a pain reliever with caffeine might speed up relief from the headache.

Pregnancy morning sickness is a phenomenon which very few
people have a clear understanding of.  Doctors
suggest it is due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, usually in the first
trimester, and possibly also to due to low sugar levels. Whatever the cause,
Morning sickness symptoms can make you miserable and, with almost half of all
pregnant women experiencing it, the desire to stop morning sickness is very
common.

There are many are many natural ways that you can stop
morning sickness.  Simple suggestions
such as not sitting up or standing too quickly, or carrying crackers or almonds
with you in nibble can work well.

One key thing you can do to help stop morning sickness is to
avoid any smell or taste that makes you nauseous.  Listen to your body!  If something makes you nauseous, keep well clear.

Another helpful suggestion is avoiding large meals, which
can make you feel over full, replacing them with 5 to 6 small snack type meals

a day.  One easy way to stop morning
sickness is to make sure you have something in your stomach at all times,
preferably something that is not high in fats or grease.

So when Pregnancy nausea hits, try eating a shaving of fresh
ginger, or eating potato chips instead of saltine crackers.  These taste great (not bland), and because many
women experience pregnancy nausea due to an increase in the secretion from
their saliva glands, salt and vinegar chips are suggested to stop morning sickness
symptoms.  The salt and vinegar flavour
has been proven to soak up excess saliva, and this can have the desired effect:
to stop morning sickness.

Make sure you have your blood iron levels checked, because
this also can make you feel dizzy, and lightheaded and nauseous, which can add
the uncomfortable experience of morning sickness symptoms.

Pregnancy should, after all, be a time of great enjoyment
for a woman, but this is difficult to imagine when your head is in the toilet
bowl!  If you use these and other
suggestions to help you stop morning sickness, you may discover that your
pregnancy is a wonderful experience.

Pregnancy Morning Sickness

Posted by: Admin in Headache Remedies on June 9th, 2009

As with headaches alone, headache nausea can be caused by any number of things, but if you suffer from this fairly regularly, then you should see your doctor for further investigation. What it does mean to have a headache and nausea at the same time is that your body is not happy and needs a rest.

Now if your headache is sudden and gets worse quickly, bringing nausea with it as the pain level increases, then you should seek immediate medical care. According to the Mayo Clinic, these are signs of a ruptured brain aneurysm. However, these are also the common signs of a stroke, along with numbness on one side, or confusion. In both these cases you need immediate medical assistance.

Headache nausea could be the side effects of taking a new medication, or even stopping one you have taken for years, and of course hangovers are responsible for way too many bouts of headache and nausea!

Dehydration can cause the symptoms of headache and nausea too, so make sure that you drink plenty of water, even when you are not feeling well. Something else that can bring on the same symptoms is a lack of food, which always seems very odd because the nausea makes you want to avoid food. If you are someone who typically gets headaches and nausea when hungry, you might want to consider eating smaller meals more often, or else have a snack between meals. By eating more frequently, your blood sugar levels will not have such extreme highs and lows, and it could help you feel much better.

Migraine headaches are well known for the visual disturbance they cause as well as the nausea and headache. The cause of these headaches varies for each person, but it could be brought on by eating a specific food like onions, cheese, or chocolate. Bright lights are also a trigger for migraines, and it is helpful if you can discover the cause of your headaches if you suffer from them frequently, so that you can get relief by avoiding the triggers.

To set about your investigation, make a note of everything you eat and drink each day, when the headache and nausea starts, and what you are doing at the time. Keep this going for as long as you can, and look at your results to see if there are any common factors. May be your headache and nausea only happens after eating chocolate, or drinking red wine, or… there are many possibilities, but if you can track the culprit down, you then have more control over your health, and this is a good thing.

Be wary of taking too many painkillers, as excess of these can cause their own problems with your health. Take a look at some of the natural remedies to see if these can help you like they do many people, but above all, see your medical doctor, and give him or her all the details of your symptoms, what you think may be causing your headaches and nausea, and what you have tried to stop the symptoms.

And don’t forget to list any medications that you are taking regularly as some of these have the side effects of headache and nausea.

The number of headache causes is surprisingly high, especially when you consider that most people don’t even consider the cause, they just take a tablet to help relieve the symptoms. However, by doing this, the symptoms are relieved, but the cause may never be known, and this could be a problem long term since painkillers themselves can cause health issues if taken in excess over a long period. So here we shall look at some of the headache causes and how to stop them.

If you are a continual headache sufferer, then you would do well to keep a diary of what you ate and what you were doing before your headache started. This might be time consuming, but it should enable you to see what could be causing them, which will then help you to remove them from your life for the most part.

Bruxism – or teeth grinding produces tension in the muscles of the jaw and face and can cause headaches. A visit to the dentist could have you using a mouth guard to stop this tension, and thus reduce your headaches.

Caffeine is found in chocolate, tea, coffee, soda, and antihistamines, and even some painkillers. Try removing all caffeine from your diet and although the first few days may cause your headaches to be much worse as you go through withdrawal, once you get through this you should feel much better.

Chemical sensitivities cause headaches in many people. Items like computer screens if used in a confined environment can cause headaches because of the chemicals that they emit, according to a Swedish study.

Magnesium deficiency can cause cluster headaches, as well as regular headaches or migraines, and if you think this could be your problem, ask your doctor to run a test to check your calcium and magnesium levels. The combination of high calcium and low magnesium can cause these headaches.

Common colds also have headaches as a symptom, and to limit the length of a cold, take zinc supplements, available in capsule or tablet forms.

Sodium levels increase before headaches, so check what you are eating before your headaches, and if it is salty, then you know to reduce the sodium in your diet.

Heavy metal toxicity, especially mercury and lead, can cause headaches, but a hair analysis, or specific blood test for each metal can confirm this or rule it out for you. Do note that these tests may be expensive.

Mold and mildew, are two toxins which are found in damp areas, and can trigger headaches. Getting rid of them can be awkward, especially as people often use bleach, which itself can trigger headaches. Mold and mildew do not like heat or air movement, so if you can provide this in the mildewy area, you will get these toxins under control.

Scented candles often have chemical additives that can cause headaches, so try to use candles with natural essential oils.

Muscle tension in the neck can cause headaches, so try to relax these muscles, by massage, or heat.

Stress and anxiety is a common cause of headaches, where removing the stress is difficult. Some form of yoga or meditation may help with relaxation.

Bright lights trigger migraine headaches for some people, especially flashing lights, so staying away from these can help.

The lack of oxygen when sleeping may be the cause of headaches for those people who sleep with a blanket or sheet over their head, as this traps the carbon monoxide resulting in less oxygen. The solution is to not sleep with your head under a blanket if this gives you a headache!

Medications can have side effects of headaches, migraine headache and plenty of other symptoms too, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking prescription drugs that you think may be causing you problems. Oral contraceptives have this unwanted side effect for many women.

Artificial sweeteners are in many prepackaged foods to reduce their calories, and these often cause headaches. Watch out for aspartame in chewing gum too, as not only can this cause headaches, but the constant chewing motions can affect the muscle tensions too.

Food ingredients such as casein and nitrates which are found in wine and processed meats could be causing your headaches, but keeping a log of foods and drinks and when your headache occurs should help you decide if this is a problem for you.

Lack of food can also bring on headaches, in which case you need to eat smaller meals more frequently, or have a small snack in between meals, so that your blood sugar never gets too low.

Dehydration can also fetch on headaches, so always make sure that you are drinking plenty of water, and when drinking alcohol, drink water too, as alcohol will dehydrate you further.

Smoking brings on headaches for some people, and as it also has many other very serious health issues, it would be a good thing to stop. See your doctor to help you with this.

Wheat and gluten sensitivities could also be responsible for your headaches – again, keep a record of what you eat and drink, and when your headaches occur.

Barometric pressure may be affecting you, with a headache warning you of an oncoming storm because of the changes in this pressure.

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are air pollutants that are a leading cause of headaches as well as major contributing factors to ozone. These compounds are found in drinking water, most spray items as well as cleaning fluids, nail polish remover, paint products pest repellents, carpets, and air fresheners. These days air fresheners are encouraged and designed to be used everywhere in the home and the car, but these can cause headaches in some people, so check it out by removing them from everywhere for a while to see whether your headaches disappear.  Clothing which is dry cleaned is treated with a solvent called perchloroethylene, which is particularly nasty, attacking the central nervous system, so when you are transporting your clothes back from the cleaners, put it in the trunk, then let it air out thoroughly before you put it back into your closet.

Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs can cause headaches for many, and this condition is known as electro sensitivity. Due to our own electrical and chemical makeup, some of us are more sensitive to EMFs than others. Cell phones, electric blankets, microwave ovens, computers are just a few of the many items that could be causing your headaches.

Remember that there are EMFs at your place of employment too, so you may want to look into this a little more.

Teflon coated pans are culprits of letting off toxic gas at high temperatures needed for cooking some foods at high temperatures, for example bacon, and if you use these pans, you may want to lower the temperature.

Now these are just some of the headache causes that are around, unfortunately there are many more, with some diseases having headaches as a symptom. If you suspect your headache is caused by something in particular, investigate it, and find out for sure if it is causing your headaches – it will be worth your time to know.
