6. Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching the infected area. You might unwittingly make it worse through bacterial infection, as well as spread the virus to other people.

7. Use an anesthetic ointment to alleviate the pain.

8. Take vitamin supplements that contain anti-oxidants, vitamin B, and lysine. This will help improve your immune system. Anti-oxidants are essential to a well-functioning immunity, and Vitamin B deficiency has been linked to cold sore outbreaks. Lysine, on the other hand, has been found to be effective in warding off cold sores.

9. Get adequate rest. Not only is it vital for enhancing the immune system, it is also a great way to relieve stress.

10. Apply ice to the infected area. This will prevent inflammation.

11. Keep your toothbrush in a clean and dry cabinet. Avoid keeping it in the bathroom, as wet places are ideal for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 to proliferate.

If a person knows of another person who has a cold sore, it is not unusual for him or her to ask, “Are cold sores contagious?” Not only that, the person will probably ask for an effective cold sore cure.

Before answering that question, let us know what causes cold sores. Cold sores are caused by a virus called the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, or HSV-1.  It is characterized by the appearance of red, pus-containing blisters that form around the area of the mouth or nose, and in some cases, in other parts of the face and body. It is crucial to know that an infected person can spread the virus to other people that he or she came into contact even without showing outward signs or symptoms.

- Direct skin to skin contact with the infected person.

Unwittingly handling and/or touching the infected person’s possessions like toothbrush, towel and clothes can also spread the cold sore virus.

Cold sores are in their most contagious stage when the blisters have burst open and pus have begun to ooze out. Be wary of the pus in these blisters as they contain millions of the virus, so if an infected person is in this stage, he or she must avoid contact with other people, so as to not infect them.
