Morning sickness is an unwanted side effect of pregnancy for many women. In fact, 50% of women who give birth experience morning sickness. Learn what steps can be taken to prevent or eliminate, morning sickness

And if that isn’t bad enough, morning sickness usually is more than just “morning sickness”… it can last all day. Also, a pregnant woman must be very careful about what medication she takes, because many can be harmful to a growing fetus. So, because of the pain of morning sickness, and the lack of safe chemical medications, natural remedies for morning sickness are frequently taken. Here are a few steps and home remedies that are proven to work for morning sickness:

Step 1: Don’t let your stomach become empty. An empty stomach is thought to be the source behind many episodes of nausea during pregnancy. To keep a stomach with food in it, you need to do 2 things… First, eat 6 small meals a day, rather than 1 big meal. Second, keep a bland, salty food by the bed such as crackers, and eat a serving whenever you wake up. Do this whether it is the middle of the night, or first thing in the morning. Keeping food in the stomach can help some women reduce the nausea, and it is an extremely safe method of doing so.

Step 2: Avoid fatty and fried foods. These can be hard on the stomach, and aren’t healthy to eat anyway.

Step 3: It is important to drink lots of fluids, particularly water. Avoid soda, carbonated drinks, and caffeine.

Step 4: If the nausea or vomiting start to occur, a peppermint oil home made inhaler can suppress it. Simply drop 1 – 3 drops of the essential oil peppermint on a napkin, hold the napkin near the mouth and nose and breath in. Peppermint has a soothing effect, and will reduce the symptoms of nausea. This remedy is extremely effective, and was written up in “The Journal of Advanced Nursing” back in September, 1997.

Step 5: Take a vitamin B6 Supplement. This been common knowledge for a while, but only recently has been used to stop morning sickness. In the 1940′s, two studies were conducted on a total of over 350 women and concluded the same thing: taking 25 mg – Taking 60mg of vitamin B6 has been studied and proven to help some women prevent morning sickness. Ideally, you should take it 3 times per day, in a 10 mg dosage per time – 20 mg capsules at a time. Once first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, once mid day, and once in the evening. Never take more than 100 mg a day, because nerve problems are possible with more than 100 mg a day.

Although not all of these remedies will be effective for everyone, each one has been studied and the results show some level of effectiveness for many women. Always consult a doctor before doing anything while pregnant, since pregnancy is a very sensitive medical condition, and there are many ways to accidentally affect your babies growth and development. These treatments, albeit natural and organic, should still be taken only under the supervision of a medical professional.

What I did to figure out what seems to make the nausea/vomitting worse is keep a “diary” of what I was eating. By doing that I noticed what foods seemed to give me the most trouble: red meats are a big one for me, and I avoid them now. Also, I started taking my prenatal vitamin at night when the nausea was the most mild.       I had such bad nausea while pregnant that I actually lost 15 lbs! My doctor told me to take, as crazy as it sounds, Unisom and B-6 vit. She said take it at night and it helps calm the nausea the next day, and she assured me it was completely safe for my unborn child. This was the only thing that help curb my nausea. Of course you should ask your Doctor first, but I hope this helps!

      Honey I was sick from week 6 to week 25 and then still nauseated until I delivered. From week 6 to week 14 or so, absolutely nothing helped. I remember being so thirsty, but nothing would quench my thirst because it made me sick to drink or eat. After week 14, I ate sunflower seeds all day. I would suck on them, eat the seed and then spit out the shell. Keeping busy with those, helped me some. I also lived off of Taco Bell bean burritos with no onions or sauce. I wanted nachos with jalapenos so bad, but I tried them and yep, you know the rest. Greasy food was definitely bad on me. When I asked this question, I heard everything from “preggy pops” to ginger and carbs. Then it was more protein, less protein, crackers, etc. I just wanted to throw up my kid in the toilet sometimes because I was THAT miserable!! LOL! Unfortunately everyone is different and you will have to try it all before you find your own. Best wishes to you and your little one. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

      Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

      You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

      You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning.       There is not surefire way to prevent it, but if you bear the burden of having morning/all day sickness, there are a few methods to make it a little easier on you. Eating crackers, bread, and other bland foods tends to help. So does drinking Sprite or Ginger Ale (or eating or drinking anything ginger for that matter). I also used SeaBands during my first trimester which worked wonders!! Hope that helps.

      In my case, I tried every trick: eating small meal, eating saltines before getting up in the morning, gynger, ginger ale. Nothing helped, I had the worst case of vomiting. My doctor prescribed me zofran, and I took that for about 6 weeks. That is the olny thing that helped.

      I had severe nausea with all my pregnancies. Here are a few tips:

      *Cold drinks, for some reason, tend to make you nauseaus. Try drinking your drinks at room temperature.

      *Gatorade is good, not only does it seem to curb nausea but it replenishes important fluids and electrolytes you lose from throwing up.

      *Lemons have something in them that wards off nausea. Try lemon drops, lemonheads, or some kind of lemon hard candy. The sugar also helps keep your blood sugar at a consistant level which also helps with nausea, weakness, tiredness, etc.

      *Try to keep something light on your stomach. Empty stomachs trigger nausea. Applesauce, yougurt, a small piece of cheese.

      *Gingerale is really good. They have flavored gingerale, such as raspberry and dry grape if you don’t like plain gingerale.

      Nausea is your bodys way of adjusting to hormones. Alot of women find that they have an aversion to meats or whatnot. It’s your bodies way of telling you what it needs.

      If you eat toast, put a small amount of jelly or honey on it. The small amount of sugar really goes a long way, and it will help out ALOT!!

      Spearmint gum is good too, for when you are on the go.

      i got some ginger chews at the health food store and they work for me quite well. I’ve also noticed taking warm baths can help it go away for a bit. Saltines are great but goldfish crackers help me more. ginger ale is good but better with the fizz stirred out. sometimes its too sweet for me though and makes it worse. Also, very carefully read your body. if it smells weird, dont eat it. if it tastes weird, dont eat it. if it looks weird, dont eat it. trust your senses. I also noticed taking my prenatals right before i went to bed was better then any other time of the day on my morning sickness.

      First, not everyone gets morning sickness. I had it all at all hours of the day & night until 20 weeks. It was horrible. There is no way to completely avoid it, but you can lessen the symptoms. It helped to eat only blan foods & never get hungry, always have something in your stomach, crackers, whatever. I ate right before bed & set my alarm for 3 am to eat a plain bagel to avoid running to the toilet at 6am. Also ppl say to eat Ginger, didn’t help me at all.

      Best remedy is time. It will go away.

      I had horrible all day sickness with my first son. Try putting some crackers on your night stand and when you wake up eat a couple before you even get out of bed. Wait about a minute and then get up. Also try eating very bland meals and only a little at a time. Example: Toast without butter, mashed potatoes with out butter or pepper, etc. Also try drinking some sprite. Again only eat and drink a little at a time. Take a bite or two then wait and eat a little more. If you throw up wait at least an hour before you try to eat again. They also have pregnancy lollypops at drug stores that help with morning sickness. I hope this works for you. I know how you are feeling , but hang in there it won’t last forever.

      Here’s the key: you must not let yourself get hungry OR overeat. Its alot of work but you need to eat small healthy things literally all day long. Here’s a few dietary staples: Gingerale!!! Original flavor goldfish crackers. Cereal high in fiber (eat it dry as a snack or with milk) At least two full glasses of milk everyday. Yogurt!!! fresh fruit, especially bannanas and strawberries. some things to stay away from: Greasy foods (french fries & burgers) bacon, too much chocolate (will give you headaches), anything really salty or extrememly suggary. Make sure you keep food in your stomach at all times. you will probably need to nibble at night as well to prevent feeling yucky first thing in the AM.

      When I was pregnant I found that staying up all night and being more active made my “morning” sickness worse.

      It is caused my changes in your body, for example your hormonal changes.

      I have gestational diabetes, and I do not think that having diabetes has anything to do with morning sickness. Each person and pregnancy is different.

      I was sick all the way through my pregnancy (please don’t tell your wife that). I can honestly tell you that I tried EVERYTHING. Nothing works 100% but I will tell you some of the things that eased it a little: Menthol sweets-got rid of that horrible taste in my mouth and ending up eating loads of them; Eating little and often-when I was at work, I kept small choc biscuits dotted around and had a little nibble when I felt the nausea coming on; travel wristbands(Sea bands)-not really sure that they work that well but I was that desparate that I would try anything; crystallised ginger-I hated the taste but it is supposedly the best thing for sickness; ginger biscuits (same reason but nicer to eat); Satisfy cravings-I had a thing for salmon paste sandwiches (yuk) and used to make up a big batch in the morning so that I could just grab one when I felt like it. As I said, nothing worked 100% but all made it more manageable. I used to feel that if I kept busy, it took my mind off of it so get her out and about, have day trips to places you wouldn’t normally go. Paint the nursery and go baby shopping, it makes it all seem worthwhile. Good luck-my heart goes out to her.

      omg, oldtimekid’s answer is really infuriating.

      Please do not follow his recommendations. Aloe Vera should NEVER be used internally during pregnancy due to its emmenagogue/uterine stimulant properties, which can promote uterine bleeding and possibly cause a miscarriage. Licorice is also not recommended during pregnancy, nor are essential oils of any kind for internal use. Peppermint essential oil in particular should be avoided as it can stimulate miscarriage. Shame on you oldtimekid! This, like many of your other answers to questions in this category is not only inaccurate but truly deplorable!

      There are many factors that contribute to morning sickness: sudden hormonal changes, in particular a rapid increase in the hormone chorionic gonadotrophin (CG); shifting dietary needs; insufficient amounts of B vitamins.

      Taking ginger tea will only help to alleviate the nausea of morning sickness, rather than addressing the underlying causes. Since both the liver and endocrine glands are involved in hormone production and regulation, I would recommend a combination of Dandelion root, Wild Yam and Chaste Tree berry…all of which are safe during pregnancy.

      As these are tonic herbs, you may not notice the effects right away, but if you sip the tea at regular intervals throughout the day, you will eventually begin to feel the results. Taking these (or other liver and endocrine tonic herbs) before conception will definitely be of benefit to help normalize your hormones thereby helping to treat one of the underlying causes of morning sickness.

      Since all pregnancies are different, just hope this one won’t be as bad! I used sea-bands (available at drug stores), ginger ale, peppermints, and saltine crackers….also i have heard of women using marijuana. A lot of people are against this and I’ll probably catch a lot of crap, but if it’s something you’re not against, it’s worth researching (credible sites).

      Marijuana is not mixed with tobacco (it’s a totally separate plant). Please understand that I am not advising anyone to smoke marijuana while they are pregnant! I am actually not advising you to do anything, I’m just sharing my experience and what I have heard from others. Please follow your own common sense and your doctor’s advice.

      The only thing that worked for me during my pregnancy were tums (safe during pregnancy), baby tylenol, saltine crackers and I practically lived off of sprite… the carbonation in the soda helped me burp (TMI I know) and I found that really relieved me! :)
      Be careful with the bananas, only because they can cause constipation during pregnancy if eaten too much. I learned that the hard way and you don’t want to be double uncomfortable if you know what I mean.
      Wow I’m just full of TMI advice tonight!

    I recently found out that we’re expecting number 5! We’re so excited, and can’t wait for our new bundle of joy to arrive mid- November! I have been having terrible morning sickness (from sun up to sun down) for a short while now, but it’s been ten times worse then with my other 3 pregnancies (including a set of twins). I’ve been craving pickles like crazy, I’ll eat almost 2 jars in one day… does that have something to do with it?       The first time I was pregnant I had my good and bad days. When it was a bad day I might as well have lived in the bathroom. My husband came home with “Preggy pops” you can get them online at walgreens.com. They are just lollipops. Also ask your OB for Bendectin. It works so good. Drink water and eat small meals and take it easy. Good luck!

      I had crazy all day sickness too. What works for me is eating. sounds impossible, I know. Try to have a few bites of something every half hour. some toast, cold fruit, and dry cereal worked for me. the key is not having an empty stomach. and never drink anything before eating, or brushing your teeth, lol. Keep some snacks near you bed and munch on them before going to sleep and during the night if you wake up. True, I feel like all I do is eat, but for example last night I didn’t eat anything before I went to bed and 6AM I woke up throwing up. It really worked for me and I hope it helps you.

      The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

      Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

      You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

      You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

      If nothing else works, ask your doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help. If you’re really feeling horrible and can’t keep anything down, your doctor may be willing to see you earlier.

    Morning sickness and eating?
    I’m 6 weeks pregnant, and I’ve read a lot of things that say to eat first thing in the morning to prevent morning sickness, eat often, etc, but I’ve found that as long as I don’t eat I’m fine.

    For example, this morning I woke up at 6 & didn’t eat until 9 (cereal with milk) & had no sickness. Then I ate a cracker at 1 because I felt like I should be eating something & I’ve been sick since! And the other day for two days in a row, I ate a small breakfast around 8 & didn’t eat again until 6 pm & I had no sickness on those days. But on days when I eat breakfast, snacks, lunch, etc I am sick almost all day!

    Any suggestions on what I can do with this terrible morning sickness?

    I have classes from 8 am until 8:30 pm (with breaks) some days so I have to make myself eat breakfast & lunch & I can’t concentrate in class because I’m so nauseated!

    & I was overweight before I got pregnant so it’s not like I’m starving myself! I usually love food.

      My first suggestion would be to eat, eat, eat.. Whether it makes you sick or not, your baby and YOU need the nurishment and to go for so long without any nutrition is bad for your baby and you. I noticed with my last pregnancy that grazing through the day helped me a ton. Not big amounts of food, but a small breakfast, a small snack, a small lunch, a small snack, another snack, dinner, and then maybe 1 -2 snacks after dinner. Also drink lots of water, and feel free to try to take some antacids that may help neutralize some of your angry stomach acid. If it gets too bad, you can see your doctor and they can prescribe you an anti-nausea medication that is safe for pregnancy.

    What does morning sickness feel like?
    I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am TERRIFIED of morning sickness. It is a deathly phobia of mine.. to vomit. But I need to overcome this phobia. I’ve tried hypnosis etc and nothing works.       Calm down. Many women never have morning sickness. :-)

      Mine started around 5-6 weeks. If yours gets bad, you can always ask your doctor for medication- that’s what I had to do, because nothing else worked. Otherwise, I was throwing up every half an hour.

      I am currently 23 wks along in my third pregnancy. All three pregnancies have made me miserable. I am sick the whole time. There are several things I’ve tried that help. First, you can try sucking on hard candy, pretty much anything except mint. You can also use Tums or Rolaids…both are completely safe. You can also try a medicine like Zantac…again, completely safe. A lot of the time our nausea is caused by too much stomach acid, so the Tums and Zantac may work. Also, eat something small every two hours. If you keep food in your stomach, the acid won’t bother you as much. Good luck and hang in there…I know exactly how you feel!!!!!

    This is my 3rd pregnancy, I’m 4-5wks preg, and the nauseous feeling has started already. I haven’t actually vomited, but the constant sickly feeling is so bad, and I’m finding that the only thing to cure it is eating!!!! With my first pregnancy I had sickness from 6-16wks and then again from 35-40wks…but with my second pregnancy, I had sickness from 6-40 weeks non stop, I lost weight, became very ill, and really suffered.       You might not ever get physically sick…I never did with any of my pregnancies I was just always really nauseous. I was 6 to 8 weeks before I felt sick. Alot of women never have morning sickness. Talk to you dr about some kind of nausea mediation. Go to mother hood the clothing store they have candies that help your nausea and drink ginger ale and eat crackers. And I noticed whole milk made it worse for me but thats not all people. I hope all works out for you. You will learn on you pregnancy journey what helps you and makes it better for you and what Not to eat.

      I am 6 weeks pregnant and I haven’t thrown up yet.. I get nauseous randomly. I have found that eating every 2-3 hours helps alot and have crackers and ginger ale on hand.

      At ten days past ovulation- if you indeed did conceive during the time you stated this is what has happened: Sperm would have traveled up the fallopian tube and fertilized the egg, then it’s about a three to five day journey to the uterus and another two to five days for implantation. If you are pregnant implantation would have just happened in the last few days; so, yes, it’s a bit too early for any pregnancy symptoms other than possible implantation bleeding (but don’t worry if you don’t have it- I didn’t) and some menstrual-like cramps. Try to wait until the day of or day after your next expected period- early pregnancy tests CAN detect pregnancy four days before but the accuracy rate is much lower than waiting.

    please help my all day morning sickness prevents me from walking, or exercising on treadmill?
    I am 9 weeks and 3 days pregnant. From 4 weeks I have had all day nausea and vomitting comes like once every other day. I found the first 3 weeks even during the morning sickness, I was able to walk on treadmill I had the nausea but with a peppermint in mouth, I would get through. Now from 2 weeks my nausea it seems has increased a bit more and now I dont even feel like walking during the day. the walking from work to car or building to building makes me bloated and nauseous. Any suggestions? Is it okay if I continue to suck on mints or jolly ranchers while I walk on treadmill as thats the only way I can exercise? Otherwise I feel i will vomit during my exercise. Also, I have not been able to exercise from over a week now and I already feel like I am gaining weight. I keep eating something every 2 hours so I feel like my tummy can’t always handle it either. Any help guys?
    I find it a problem to go to lunch because driving to places at lunch time makes me nauseous as I am hungry for food. Walking in grocery store or shopping for quick things over lunch, I can’t do it without a mint in my mouth. I feel bad.

      It’s one of the joys of being pregnant. I’m sorry you have it so bad, It should taper off around 12 weeks but some people have morning sickness the whole way through their pregnancy. Try to find something that you can hold down and just eat that. My doctor told me I could exercise during my pregnancy but not to get my heart rate over 140 or 160, I don’t remember which one.

    Morning sickness is messing up my front teeth. What can I do?
    I’m 10 weeks and the all-day sickness has apparently been taking a toll on my front teeth. I brush every time I throw up, which gets a little excessive. However, my front teeth are visibly getting clearer and darker(yellow-brown tint) on the bottom and I have several small discolored areas. I obviously can’t make myself stop throwing up, what can I do to prevent further damage? I liked my pretty white teeth!

      Brushing immediately after throwing up is good, since it will help get rid of the acid in your mouth that could damage teeth. Also drink plenty of water to wash out any vomit remaining in your mouth, and maybe use some mouthwash as well. As far as keeping them white, you probably just have to bleach them or use some sort of whitening strip.

      Keep hydrated. Don’t let your stomach get completely empty. Keep snacks nearby (such as crackers, pretzels, veggies, etc.) Eat something small before you get out of bed (I always kept crackers on the nightstand). Sour candies really seemed to help me. So did ginger (either ginger ale or ginger cookies). Just take heart in the fact that it usually gets better around the 12 week mark. If you can’t keep anything down, let your doctor know. They can prescribe something to help you.

      I had 2 experiences, very similar to each other. For me it started 6-8 weeks into the pregnancy and I used crackers or toast to help me through it. I had to eat some right as I woke up to prevent being sick. Then I had to keep it handy throughout the day (it should really be called throughout-the-day sickness). It ended right around the end of the 4th month. It wasn’t horrible, but it still was the most annoying part of the pregnancy. Thank God, vitamins didn’t make me sicker. I think though that I should have taken a bit more Calcium, as all my teeth became weaker.
