‘Morning sickness’ or nausea gravidarum may be used to define the overall feeling of being unwell experienced by women in the initial months of pregnancy. It makes a woman feel dreadfully uncomfortable. It is the cumulative outcome of an enhanced sense of smell, excess stomach acids; turbulence felt in stomach, vertigo and increased fatigue. The patient also feels extremely nauseous and may be subject to bouts of vomiting. Too much of vomiting may lead to complications like dehydration, malnutrition etc.

It cannot prove harmful for the baby unless the expecting mother loses weight severely due to excessive vomiting. Thankfully for the majority, nausea gravidarum tides over by the end of the third month of pregnancy. A woman mostly suffers from nausea gravidarum early in the morning; but symptoms may be present at day time even. The causes or triggering factors of nausea gravidarum may be listed as follows:

1. Rapid increase in estrogen levels
2. Hormonal fluctuations
3. Rapid rise and fall in blood glucose levels
4. Strong odor
5. Vitamin B deficiency
6. Sensitive gastrointestinal tract
7. Stress
8. Certain food items
9. Traveling
10. Fatigue.

Home Remedies

1. Taking 3-4 cups of ginger tea or any ginger supplement daily eases the discomfort caused by morning sickness.

2. Mix 1 teaspoon lime juice and 1 teaspoon mint juice and take the mixture along with 1 tablespoon sugar. This relieves nausea gravidarum.

3. Dissolve 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in glassful cold water and drink before going to bed at night. This is an effective home remedy for morning sickness.

4. Mix wheat germ in to warm milk and take a teaspoon after every 1 hour. This is a useful morning sickness remedy.

5. Extract juice of 20-25 curry leaves. Mix 1 teaspoon honey and 2 teaspoon fresh lime juice in to juice obtained from curry leaves. Take the mixture thrice a day to get cured of morning sickness.

6. Put three drops of lavender oil and one drop of peppermint oil in to a diffuser and spray in your room to make the surrounding air fragrant. This helps to fight morning sickness.

7. Consume the easily digestible unsalted crackers immediately after waking up in the morning. This calms your stomach and alleviates nausea gravidarum.

8. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and juices. This keeps the stomach steady and helps to combat nausea gravidarum.

9. Do not overeat because that will unsettle your stomach and exacerbate morning sickness.

10. Feast on frozen fruit bars or any other frozen treat. This helps to beat nausea.

11. Breathe in plenty of fresh air. This cures nausea gravidarum.

12. Take ample rest.

13. Avoid fried, fatty foods.

14. Follow the needs of your stomach and act accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness in pregnancy?
I have had four healthy pregnancies and gave birth at age 18, 19, 20 and 21. I never experienced a day of morning sickness. Now, at age 38, I am wondering if I become pregnant, if will I go through this?

    • ANSWER:
The hormone HCG which is produced when the embryo implants into the uterin wall is what makes you sick. This hormone doubles every 48 hours which for some people is hard on their body (and their stomachs). Just because you had 4 pregnancies with no sickness does not mean you will have a 5th just like it, or vice versa.

  2. QUESTION:
What Causes Morning Sickness In A Male?
I have really bad nausea (morning sickness) on most days i feel like if i ate something i would puke. Is there something wrong?

    • ANSWER:
it may be caused by a minimum amount of blood and oxygen being transported to your brain. if this is not the answer then i suspect it may be caused by the polar diffusion of your atoms and amount of blood.

  3. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness and nausea that ISNT pregnancy?
I am def. not pregnant. I just feel really sick every morning and there is a little pain between my ribs below my breasts. This has been going on about 11 months.

    • ANSWER:
I used to have morning sickness every single day. It was caused by a stomach acid problem that may or may not go away by itself. The pain between the ribs may be muscle soreness on the inside of your rib cage because you’re body’s trying to neutralize an excess of acid.

  4. QUESTION:
What, apart from pregnancy, causes morning sickness?
For the last few days I’ve been waking up about an hour earlier than usual feeling very sick. I’ve not actually been sick yet, and the feeling wears off by mid-morning. I’m not pregnant or anything.

    What could this be?

    • ANSWER:
Anxiety makes you feel sick in the morning and clears up in the middle of the day

  5. QUESTION:
What exactly causes morning sickness in pregnant women?
Is it the surge of hormones?

    Thanks!

  6. QUESTION:
    What causes morning sickness?
What causes pregnant women to have morning sickness? And when are they most likely to have it?

    • ANSWER:
this is funny becuase i was driving and i had a flash back of me being pregnant and how i got nauseated while FOB was driving and I barfed on the side of the freeway and that made me wonder WHY ON EARTH CAUSES MORNING SICKNESS so i googled it today and found out that it can be caused by:

      • Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

Estrogen, another hormone that rises rapidly in early pregnancy, is also considered a prime suspect, and it’s possible that other hormones play a role as well.

      • An enhanced sense of smell and sensitivity to odors. It’s not uncommon for a newly pregnant woman to feel overwhelmed by the smell of a bologna sandwich from four cubicles away, for example, and that certain aromas instantly trigger her gag reflex. This may be a result of higher levels of estrogen.

      • A tricky stomach. Some women’s gastrointestinal tracts are simply more sensitive to the changes of early pregnancy.

  7. QUESTION:
what causes morning sickness at 19 weeks?
everyday i wake up feeling the same way. headache at the back of my neck and i have to be sick. When im sick I dont actually throw up anything, i just gag and gag and gag and the eventually im all better and good to go for the day. What could be causing this and can i take it as a sign that my baby is still doen good in there?

  8. QUESTION:
What are causes of morning sickness besides pregnancy?
I know I”m not pregnant, but these past few days, I haven’t been able to keep food down in the morning. Could the recent death of my grandma be a possible cause?

    • ANSWER:
Could be stress you’re feeling from that tragic event. It could also be due to low blood pressure when you wake up, or even dehydration. Try drinking a small glass of water before you go to bed

Personally, I’ve found that taking a multi-vitamin was making me sick everyday. I can’t take vitamins in the morning, even with food, or I will be seeing it all again in about an hour.

Maybe look at what you’re eating as well. Do you eat late at night before going to bed…that could be contributing. I can’t handle very large meals any time of the day, so in the morning, I’ll get ready for the day first, then have a light yogurt. Then maybe a few hours later, I’ll take a break and have a piece of fruit. This goes on throughout the day. While I don’t eat lots at once, I still get my calories in because I eat 6-7 times during the course of a day.

Not saying that that is your issue, but just suggesting that, until this subsides, you might want to downsize your breakfast or put it off another hour or so if you’re not too hungry.

  9. QUESTION:
What, physiologically speaking, causes morning sickness?
    I’ve always wondered. Why vomiting?

    • ANSWER:
Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

  11. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness during pregnancy?
    Just curious!

    Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
The truth is doctors don’t yet know but there is a couple of theories. One is that it has something to do with the release of several different hormones once it starts to implant and the placenta begins to grow. During this stage the embryo is mostly surviving on it’s yolk sac and the placenta doesn’t fully take over the job of supplying nutrients until about 12 weeks (which seems very late). This is around the time most women find their sickness goes, give or take a couple of weeks. So current theory has it that is is something to do with the growing placenta or the yolk sac and the release of hcg and relaxin.

The other theory is that it has something to do with the progesterone as the placenta takes over its production at around the time morning sickness goes too.

Interestingly the tiredness you have in early pregnancy turns out to be due to your heart beating up to 15 times more per min until your body has more fluids because blood volume increases by as much as 50% at full term and your body take a while to catch up.

  12. QUESTION:
When you are pregnant, what actually causes the “morning sickness?”?
Like, does the HCG hormone meet up with some other chemical in our bodies that makes it turn into sickness or something? I’ve always wondered. I know it’s ‘because your pregnant’ but I just wanted to know what actually makes the morning sickness happen?

And is there a way to stop it?

    • ANSWER:
No one knows for sure what causes nausea during pregnancy, but it’s probably some combination of the many physical changes taking place in your body. Some possible causes include:
      • Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

A tricky stomach. Some women’s gastrointestinal tracts are simply more sensitive to the changes of early pregnancy.

I personally remember morning sickness feeling like I was on a boat at sea that I couldnt get off. awful. They say eating a small snack before you get out of bed in the morning can help. crackers or something like that. Ginger is quite helpful, ginger tea, ginger ale. ginger candies.. an old fashioned remedy keeping some lemon slices in a bag to sniff when you are feeling queasy. there is a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum .. if you cant hold anything down and feel very ill and dyhydrated, losing weight and such, go to the doctor. I think in those cases they will treat some pregnant women with some medication. in general do not take over the counter remedys. good luck to you.

  13. QUESTION:
    what causes morning sickness?
what causes morning sickness? i’m a very curious person if u know please help me out i am 1 month pregnant and i hate morning sickness…………..

    • ANSWER:
      The answer:
An increase in the circulating level of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen levels may increase by up to a hundredfold during pregnancy. However, there is no consistent evidence of differences in estrogen levels between women who experience sickness and those who don’t.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) due to the placenta draining energy from the mother, though studies have not confirmed this.
An increase in progesterone relaxes the muscles in the uterus, which prevents early childbirth, but may also relax the stomach and intestines, leading to excess stomach acids and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
An increase in human chorionic gonadotropin.
An increase in sensitivity to odors, which overstimulates normal nausea triggers.

  17. QUESTION:
    Morning sickness (causes) besides pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
I tend to get nauseous every morning; I suspect my blood sugar drops during the night. You might try eating just as soon as you wake up to see if that settles your stomach. It also happens when I’m stressed out or if I don’t get enough sleep the night before.

  18. QUESTION:
What causes a women to get morning sickness during pregnancy?
And how come some women get this and others don’t? Like, does it have to do with how much stress your under during or how little rest you get?

    • ANSWER:
Its actually the fact that your body is trying to defend itself against a foreign body.

The baby at its early stages feeds off the mother like a parasite. After about 3 months the woman’s body accepts the baby as part of the mother and usually the morning sickness stops.

  21. QUESTION:
Why do we get morning sickness?
Every pregnant women, well most, know the joys of pregnancy, and not so joyful parts of pregnancy. What is supposed to be a very wonderful and joyful experience, can be the worst experience, when your hugging the toilet or walking around feeling quite iffy. So that brings me to my question. Why morning sickness? Why throwing up, the one thing everyone hates to do. Spending hours to cook a meal to only see it again.

Does anyone know what causes morning sickness, there has to be a reasoning behind it.

    • ANSWER:
No one knows for sure what causes nausea during pregnancy, but it’s probably some combination of the many physical changes taking place in your body. Some possible causes include:

HcG rises rapidly during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but it’s a prime suspect because the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG. What’s more, conditions in which women have higher levels of hCG, such as carrying multiples, are associated with higher rates of nausea and vomiting.
Estrogen: This hormone, which also rises rapidly in early pregnancy, is another suspect. (It’s possible that other hormones play a role as well.)
An enhanced sense of smell and sensitivity to odours. It’s not uncommon for a newly pregnant woman to feel overwhelmed by the smell of coffee, for example. Certain aromas instantly trigger the gag reflex. (Some researchers think this may be a result of higher levels of estrogen, but no one knows for sure

      :)

  22. QUESTION:
What causes mean morning sickness and Nausea?

    • ANSWER:
I’m not sure, iv heard that it might be to do with blood sugar levels, but i don’t think they know 100%.
Some people say it depends on the level of hcg you have in your system, but my friend who had Twins, didn’t have 1 single day of nausea or sickness, so i doubt it’s anything to do with that,

In both my previous pregnancies i had the worst sickness, i would be sick after EVERY meal and EVERY time i brushed my teeth or had a bath, i had to carry a bag with my at all times, and i had a bin in my room so that i could throw up during the night i had this from about week 5-34 so most of my pregnancy.

Im only 4 weeks and not yet been sick although i have had a little nausea, but im expecting it to creep up on me very soon.

      Good luck x

  23. QUESTION:
My girlfriend is 9 weeks pregnant and has morning sickness all day, what causes it? ?
Is there anything she can do to stop this? how long will it last? she is sick at any moment of the day and has to stay off work, please help.

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. She really doesn’t want to be dehydrated, so she should drink as much as possible. She should take small sips so as not to overwhelm her stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so she should try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if she can manage it.

Other things that might work for her are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so she should try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

She should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when she can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. She will feel worse if her stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

She might also want to try adding peanut butter to her crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make her feel better if she can keep it down.

If nothing else works, she should ask her doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help

      Good luck!

  24. QUESTION:
    What causes bad morning/all-day sickness?
After trying for over two years, we finally got the BFP on March 5! Exciting! I’ve noticed, though, that the morning sickness hit me harder and sooner than it did with my first pregnancy. With my daughter, I didn’t experience morning sickness until near the end of the third month, and it only went for about a month, and always in the morning. With this one, a week after I got the BFP I started feeling queasy in the evenings, and it’s since gone into full-blown all-day sickness. I eat because I have to, not because I want to, and I have yet to find something that really perks my interest. I realize that every pregnancy is different, but I was wondering if there’s any particular reason that causes worse morning sickness for different pregnancies?

Maybe it’s just me. My mom had two girls, and was in and out of the hospital because she was so sick. My aunt had two boys, and only felt like throwing up once. I’ve had people tell me that because I’m more sick than last time, it’ll be a boy. I’ve also had people say twins, and a few said triplets. Is there any correlation between multiples and morning sickness? Or gender and morning sickness?
I’ve had to stop taking both B and B12 because I just couldn’t keep them down. I’ll ask my OB about B6 though.

    • ANSWER:
      Congrats!

I had the all-day sickness for most of my first pregnancy (first of four). I have two boys and two girls, and my first pregnancy was the only one I was really really sick for. I can’t tell you what causes the morning sickness – but make sure you have plenty of soda crackers around. It may help to have them on your nightstand to have a little nibble before you even get out of bed in the morning.

Also make sure you stay hydrated.

If the vomiting becomes severe, you may have something called “hyperemesis”. Make sure you talk to your doctor about it because that may require medication and possibly even IV fluids.

Of course, that new baby in your arms will be worth it all! Congrats again :-)

  25. QUESTION:
Is morning sickness random or does it happen everyday?
And i have another question… Does something cause morning sickness like people who take jogs or anything or does it just happen under will. Like every time you run you puke because you might be prego or something like that. Or does it just happen every morning.

Explaining my First question: Does morning sickness come like every morning when ever or is it just set to every morning?
So far thanks for all the wonderful answers :) but does The sickness still happen every day when going threw it or just does it come go when ever?

    • ANSWER:
The name can be misleading. I used to get sick in the evenings. It does not have a set time and does not happen like clockwork. I felt great in the mornings. When I would get too dehydrated from working out, which happened easily during my preg, I got sick.

But i am just curious about this. i burped a lot, like there is wind going round and round in my stomach. there is a little feeling like i wanna throw up, but i didnt, i instead burp a lot. so is this indigestion or morning sickness? thanks. and please answer if you got some time =)

    • ANSWER:
I had that in my early weeks of pregnancy.. I thought it was just me. I never asked anyone about it cause I didn’t know if they would really understand what it is like unless they have had it. There were times it got so bad I grabbed a bowl and started like puking motions but all that came out was air. It was really uncomfortable and annoying. Im almost 12 weeks preggo now and it has seemed to stop but at the time I didnt know if I felt nauseas from the baby or from all the gas in my tummy.
I guess it is just from the slowing of your digestive tract which cause more build up of gas. Cause the pregnancy horomones really slow things down.

  40. QUESTION:
What else can cause Morning Sickness besides Pregnancy?
Lately I have been vomiting and nueaseated at the same time every night for weeks now, I can never keep my last meal of the day down. I do take Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo at 9:30pm and I puke around 12 to 1am. I was taking Prozac but stopped a month ago because it made me nauseated too. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. What else could cause this?

    • ANSWER:
It could very well be a food sensitivity. Try cutting out the major food allergens for about a week or so and add them back slowly one at a time to see if anything triggers it. You may also be experiencing some kind of reflux. Try sleeping with your head and shoulders elevated so you’re half sitting. It could also be a reaction to your medications. Take them at another time of day and make sure you’re not mixing them with anything. I used to get violently ill when I took Tylenol before bed because it was mixing with Lamictal. No one knew at that point that they had an adverse interaction.

  41. QUESTION:
are there any birth control pills that don’t cause morning sickness?
i’m thinking of getting back on the pill, i quit b/c i couldn’t afford it but now i can. i remember when i was on it a couple years ago that the first couple months i had really bad morning sickness, it was horrible. i actually left work early one day b/c i couldn’t deal with it. i know it eventually stopped, but isn’t there some pill out there that doesn’t cause you to get morning sickness as bad? or could it be the time of day i took it? i was thinking about yaz, anyone on it?

    • ANSWER:
Progesterone based pills are better for this or low estrogen. The pill is supposed to mimick pregnancy hormones, so that is why you get sick. Talk to your doctor. It is not like back when your mom was getting on the pill, there are so many types now. You should be able to find one.

  42. QUESTION:
when a woman is pregnant… why does she get morning sickness? what causes that?

    • ANSWER:
The rapidly increasing hormones, and some even say the smells. When a woman gets pregnant her sense of smell gets better. I am able to smell things others cannot. I will walk into a friends house, and say that there house smells good like they just got done making pizza. They will tell me they made pizza the other day. It’s so weird!
Like when I walk past certain things/places, and I smell something it will make me feel like I am about to throw up. For the longest time walking into Subway made me sick. The smell of the bread bothered me.

  43. QUESTION:
If no nausea/morning sickness, can I get a positive pregnancy test?
I read that Nausea/Morning Sickness is caused by HCG. What happens if you are pregnant, but you dont have Nausea/Morning Sickness? Will I need a blood test to determine pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
pregnancy symptoms can vary from each person. I didn’t have any nausea/morning sickness when i was pregnant. Hcg is the pregnancy hormone detected by the urine test. It already means that a sperm and egg united (conception = to me yes you are pregnant). You don’t need a blood test although on your first ob visit (around 7th week)they’ll take a blood test to determine the hcg level because even if you do have hcg in your blood/urine, it doesn’t mean the baby will form (blighted ovum) or you can have a miscarriage and still have hcg in your system. Hcg levels should double everyday. That’s why they take a blood test as a basis.

Is morning sickness a symptom of a vitamin deficiency? What is the scientific reason for it?

    • ANSWER:
No – morning sickness is the cause of an extreme rise in your hormone levels. Progesterone especially. I didn’t have morning sickness until the doctors discovered my progesterone was low and they put me on pills. WOW. My sickness really kicked in then!

  45. QUESTION:
What is the drug they used to give to pregnant women to stop morning sickness that caused birth defects?

    • ANSWER:
      Thalidomide

Thalidomide, which is also known as Thalomid, is a drug used to fight aggressive cancers, particularly those that have metastasized, or spread.

      Purpose

There are many studies, either in progress or recently completed, that suggest thalidomide can slow or stop the spread of cancer of the brain, breast, colon, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow). Research studies that consider the benefit of thalidomide in treating other cancers are multiplying rapidly. The use of the drug in cancer therapy is likely to increase.

      Description

Thalidomide was first introduced in 1957 primarily as a tranquilizer, a medication prescribed particularly for imparting drowsiness and sleep. Then, it was given to pregnant women to provide them with relief from morning sickness. Soon after being prescribed to pregnant women, thalidomide was linked to death or severe disabilities in newborns. Some children who had been exposed to thalidomide while in the womb (in utero) failed to develop limbs or had very short limbs. Others were born blind or deaf or with other physical problems.

The same action of thalidomide that harms babies may make it useful as a powerful cancer fighter. Thalidomide interferes with the formation of blood vessels. It is called an antiangiogenic drug because angiogenesis refers to the formation of blood vessels. Studies in 2003 reported that thalidomide may use signal repression or have immunosuppression capabilities. This means it can act on the body’s natural immune responses.

Cancers that spread have a lot of blood vessels (are highly vascularized). Thus, when cancer cells are not nourished by a blood supply, they die. One way to stop the spread of cancer is to stop the formation of the blood vessels that carry nourishment to the cancer cells, and that is what thalidomide is thought to do. Researchers also are interested in other activities of thalidomide, particularly the ones that make it capable of eliminating skin eruptions, such as sores, or ulcers, in the mouths of patients with AIDS and leprosy.

      Recommended Dosage

Dosages being used depend on the type of cancer being attacked. For example, in one study, to treat multiple myeloma, a starting dose of 200 mg per day was increased to 800 mg per day over a two-week period.

In a colon cancer study, 400 mg per day of thalidomide were given in combination with the anticancer drug irinotecan. The dose of irinotecan was between 300 and 350 mg per day. Used in combination with irinotecan, thalidomide contributed its own cancer-fighting properties and it also seemed to reduce the side effects of irinotecan.

In a trial using thalidomide to treat prostate cancer, both low doses (as low as 200 mg per day) and high doses (as high as 1200 mg per day) were tried. The patients taking high doses fared somewhat better.

      Precautions

The serious threat thalidomide poses to fetuses cannot be overstated. No pregnant woman and no woman who has any chance of becoming pregnant should take thalidomide. (Only women who have had a hysterectomy or who are at the age of menopause and have been in a menopausal state, which is no menses, or periods, for 24 consecutive months, can be considered as having no chance of becoming pregnant.)

Patients taking thalidomide must meet strict criteria for use. Pharmacies that dispense thalidomide must have special registration.

      Side Effects

Besides the extreme risk thalidomide poses to fetuses, it also produces side effects in the person taking the drug. The side effects of thalidomide are much milder than many other anticancer drugs, and because the drug poses less discomfort than other cancer-fighting drugs, it is particularly attractive to oncologists, or physicians who treat cancer patients.

Among the side effects are erratic heartbeat, swelling (edema), digestive upsets of all sorts, including both constipation and diarrhea, pain in back and neck muscles, and skin problems.

      Interactions

Barbiturates, salts, and esters used to encourage sleep, and alcohol increase the effect of thalidomide’s power of sedation. They should not be taken with the drug. Food interferes with the absorption of thalidomide; it should be taken when the stomach is empty.

  46. QUESTION:
Which causes more morning sickness being pregnant with a boy or girl?
Does anyone know if there is anything to this? I was just wondering? I have never had morning sickness and been pregnant 6 times. I miscarried every time and now that I am pregnant again I got to thinking. I have been told that it’s possible I can’t carry a boy and that every time I’ve been pregnant before it was a boy ( I never got far enough to actually find out). Now I am only 5 weeks and feel sickly. I just want a healthy baby, but if I can carry a girl and not a boy then I hope this time it’s a girl!

I was just wondering cause my morning sickness has finally started and I am 9 weeks prego. Do I still need to be worried about a miscarriage? I want to tell everyone the good news but I want to wait until I know I am not going to miscarry. Because I do not want to go thru that in front of everyone I know.

    • ANSWER:
Hun, our first daughter passed away 2 weeks after she was born due to lung problems but there were no signs leading to this tragedy. We then experienced 3 miscarriages and she had some slight morning sickness but nothing to remark about.

We did have 2 beautiful daughters to follow all this up which are wonderfully healthy and my wife experienced severe morning sickness and hyperemesis during both of these pregnancies and was hospitalized numerous times throughout both pregnancies…and the results were absolutely wonderful.

I guess, in summation, morning sickness can occur in the most dramatic and painful ways and you can still have the most beautiful healthy child in the end.

Congratulation and I wish you all the best.

Are you sure it is your tonsils that are swollen and not your throat? I swear it took me 5 complete seconds to reply…’I'm pregnant’. He then had to look in a book to find out whats ok to take for it. I couldn’t believe he asked this question…is he mad or could there be any other reason for it??

    • ANSWER:
he may have just misunderstood you and thought you meant nausea and vomiting in the morning. or maybe he wanted to know if there were certain triggers like smells or certain foods.

i’ve personally never heard of morning sickness for anything other than pregnancy.

What causes morning sickness? Well, there are numerous 00004000 things that can be traced to the cause of morning sickness. And along with each of them, it is important to note that each case is different. In other words, every pregnant woman experiencing this may have a distinct cause that another woman may not have at all.

What causes morning sickness in some cases are hereditary-related issues. In other cases, it can be because a woman is susceptible to certain things enhanced by pregnancy. One common morning sickness cause originates with women who previously had problems conceiving. Women in this group more than likely went through some sort of hormone therapy which has been linked to causing morning sickness.

There is another morning sickness cause that has to do with hormones and their fluctuating levels. This particular problem doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with conceiving, however. Many women have too much of one hormone and not enough of another. In this case too, once pregnant, a woman is likely to experience morning sickness.

In order to find out what causes morning sickness in your specific case, you need to understand your own body. Women who are sensitive to odors may experience the same sort of problem once pregnant, which may trigger a bout of nausea. This in particular can be a morning sickness cause or simply a symptom accompanied by others causes.

One cause of morning sickness that may be considered as having a hereditary link is low blood sugar. It’s not surprising that some women who have this problem see it increase once they become pregnant. As a result, more symptoms may be seen in addition to morning sickness.

There are other things too that are known to cause morning sickness. One of these, although a little less discussed, can be considered an important cause for morning sickness. This is the body’s own process of detoxifying itself. This morning sickness cause can take on the form of many different symptoms.

Cases where the pregnant woman experiences an increase in bowel activities fits into this criteria. Some doctors credit the detoxification idea for being body’s way of making it a healthy place for the embryo to grow and develop. This is one way to explain the numerous causes for morning sickness.

While considering other causes of morning sickness, it is also necessary to look at the available treatments for this experience. There is a lot of information out there to instruct women on how to combat morning sickness. Some of them lean towards natural remedies, while others simply offer basic means to address the causes of morning sickness.

One natural treatment for morning sickness is to drink liquids, especially water, right after eating. This again is a method of detoxification, which seems to help women experiencing severe morning sickness. Another natural treatment is to consume ginger or to drink ginger ale. This spice has long been credited with controlling feelings of nausea and can be extremely valuable at this point.

The importance of understanding the causes of morning sickness leads to also finding proper treatments for it. Although women generally go through this process for only about eight to nine weeks, it can seem much longer than that. But being prepared for this experience and knowing the right remedies can help make this period transition much faster and smoother.

    What causes morning sickness?
Every morning as soon as I wake up, I feel nauseous. I know its just one of those wonderful things we pregnant ladies have to out up with but I was just wondering what the cause of morning (all day) sickness is?

    • ANSWER:
      Sudden hormone changes

You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full.

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, eat a couple of soda crackers or a piece of dry toast. Rise slowly, allowing some time for digestion to occur before you get up.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

      Thanks

They do not know the answer to that…I was insane researching it when I had hyperemesis and got no answers…only theory.

      :)

  9. QUESTION:

  12. QUESTION:
are there any birth control pills that don’t cause morning sickness?
i’m thinking of getting back on the pill, i quit b/c i couldn’t afford it but now i can. i remember when i was on it a couple years ago that the first couple months i had really bad morning sickness, it was horrible. i actually left work early one day b/c i couldn’t deal with it. i know it eventually stopped, but isn’t there some pill out there that doesn’t cause you to get morning sickness as bad? or could it be the time of day i took it? i was thinking about yaz, anyone on it?

    • ANSWER:
Progesterone based pills are better for this or low estrogen. The pill is supposed to mimick pregnancy hormones, so that is why you get sick. Talk to your doctor. It is not like back when your mom was getting on the pill, there are so many types now. You should be able to find one.

  13. QUESTION:
morning sickness…is it different for each child?
I have been pregnant 3 times. I have 2 children and had 1 miscarriage. I didn’t have morning sickness with any of the pregnancies. Is that just my body or is it different for each child. I have a boy and a girl. I am one of those people who absolutely hate throwing up. I will lay in bed for hours not moving to try to get rid of that feeling even though I know if I get it over with it will be gone within minutes.

what is it that causes morning sickness?

    • ANSWER:
It is hard to say what causes the morning sickness, but it is I believe that the hormones are a major influence to this. I guess with each child, there can be diffierent levels of hormones for each child, and that could be a factor.

Also another issue is the environmental influences such as fragrance, smell of food, other smells like pollen, chemicals and other things can set off morning sickness too.

  14. QUESTION:
Can the pill cause morning sickness?
I’m on my 4th pack of birth control pills, I just finished my period a couple days ago and decided to switch my time for taking the pill from 7:30pm to 10pm, however since then I’ve been waking up feeling extreme nausea in the morning, and today I even threw up. Is this due to the change in the time I’m taking my pill? Or is this a sign of pregnancy even though I got my period?
I have not had sex since before my period

    • ANSWER:
It is doubtful you got pregnant because that is not a big time difference in taking the pill, but it is still possible, take a pregnancy test near your next period.

Also, nausea is a symptom of birth control pills. It may be because you were taking it closer to diner time so you still had food in your stomach, so try eating a sandwich or something while you take the pill. Also, it may go away on it’s own after your body adjust to the new schedule.

  15. QUESTION:
Is morning sickness(pregnancy) caused because your baby doesn’t like the food or what are the reasons for it?
I’m about 8 weeks in my pregnancy, and have been with morning sickness for the last 2 weeks. I thought it would be fun if on my cell I would have a list of every food that has made me throw up. Well I’ve noticed that 3 times in the last 2 weeks I’ve ate chips: doritos, lays, and fritos and I’ve throw them up! It made me wonder is it cause the baby doesn’t like the food? Or cause its too much for my stomach? My husband was happy saying that good for the baby that he/she makes me throw up chips so that I won’t eat them! Haha! I was just wondering what exactly causes morning sickness or sometimes all day sickness? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
morning sickness is caused by your body disposing of the excess hormones its producing into your stomach. While it does this continuously – its when you have an empty stomach the problem occurs- its too consentrated for the body to process- so it tries to remove it from the body in the only other way it knows how- by making you throw it up. Thats why you feel sick. Your body is trying to make you get sick to get the stuff out of your stomach.

It can be controlled in two ways- First dilution= they did a study that showed drinking an 8 oz glass of real orange juice when you first wake up- before you stand up- it reduces the occurrence of morning sickness by half.
Second- absorption= go pick up good old salteen crackers (salted soda crackers.) Any time you feel even a tiny nauseated – eat 4 crackers. The salt gets the bitter taste out of your mouth and the crackers absorb the offending hormone fluid. Do not drink anything while eating crackers. Write down the exact time you feel sick- you notice it hits at the same time every day- now eat the crackers 15 minutes before the time hits- and you’ll never feel sick again!

  16. QUESTION:
what are some causes of morning sickness? (please read)?
every morning for the past few days, i have been throwing up. i KNOW that im not prego cuz im a virgin. what else could it be?
im not on birth control. it first happened like friday when i was walking to school. i was wit my friend, and my stomach starting hurting so i called for my grandmom to come pick me up….then i when i got home i got sick….

    • ANSWER:
I used to have a similar problem, I’d be sick to my stomach every day in the morning. I didn’t usually throw up, but the nausea was terrible.

Turned out I was lactose intolerant. I had a big bowl of cereal with milk every morning and it was making me sick. I switched to soy milk in my cereal and the ‘morning sickness’ went away.

  19. QUESTION:
What is the scientific cause of morning sickness?
(If you plan on responding with “PREGNANCY”, you’re fired. You’re not cute, not witty, and probably fail a lot of tests for not reading the instructions.) Now then,
Is morning sickness a symptom of a vitamin deficiency? What is the scientific reason for it?

    • ANSWER:
No – morning sickness is the cause of an extreme rise in your hormone levels. Progesterone especially. I didn’t have morning sickness until the doctors discovered my progesterone was low and they put me on pills. WOW. My sickness really kicked in then!

  20. QUESTION:

  21. QUESTION:
    Morning Sickness, need help!!!!?
Could you tell me some foods that you know of that are apt to cause morning sickness? I’ve cut out orange juice in the morning, and that seemed to help a little. What else do you think?

    • ANSWER:
When I had the flu the doc said not to drink or eat dairy because it’s harder to digest. I think that may help morning sickness. It’s hard when you’re pregnant tho because you want to get as much nutrition to the baby as possible. But my doc said (about morning sickness) whatever gets you thru it is fine. Even if you need a big gulp of pepsi every morning to keep from getting sick. Just try to replace nutrients from foods that make you sick with other foods that don’t. Check out this website http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/morningsickness.html
hopefully it will go away by your second trimester.

  22. QUESTION:
Has anyone experienced morning sickness then went on to have a miscarriage?

  23. QUESTION:
    could this be morning sickness?
I haven’t been feeling any other type of symptoms (for pregnancy or just a sickness), but for the last two or so weeks i get the random feeling like i am going to puke. i haven’t puked though, just get the feeling and sometimes i will almost puke but i hold it back as i HATE puking…
at first i didn’t think anything of it, until a few nights ago when i was eating. i bit into a smokey and instantly felt like i was going to puke… i couldn’t even look at it without feeling sick… :
i hear that the smell of certain things can cause morning sickness in pregnant people, so i got a little worried.

could this be morning sickness? could i be pregnant?

    • ANSWER:
There is no way for us to know that. Is your period late? Can you take a pregnancy test? Most women don’t experience morning sickness within the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. It comes on as the hCG levels start surging upwards.

  24. QUESTION:
Can smoking marijuana cause morning sickness?
I’m 17 and I’ve smoked pot every day for the past few months and over the past couple weeks, sometimes when i wake up i vomit a white-ish liquid. I’ve also noticed that i’m very sensitive to temperature change (when it’s cold im freezing and when its hot im sweating)..are these symptoms of smoking pot or maybe something else?
i’m not asking if its normal to vomit white-ish liquids in the morning. the people i know who smoke pot don’t experience anything like that so i’m asking if thats a side effect from smoking or if its something completely unrelated

    • ANSWER:
the vomit might be from stress. is something bothering you thats really big? for sensitivity has it been like this when you’ve smoked, or through out your life? first you need to ask these questions in order to understand more, i suggest you see a doctor immediately

  25. QUESTION:
Could prenatal vitamins cause morning sickness? ?
Okay so I’m 9 weeks pregnant, and it is very different from my first pregnant (as I expected) anyways once getting the positive results back over a month ago I asked for prenatal vitamins because my first appointment isn’t until the 22nds of this month. So they gave me prenatal vitamins, and I notice ever since I started taking them I’ve been very sick. My hubby and I think its the prenatal vitamins, because none of this started happening until after I started taking the prenatal vitamins.
I take mine at night and with food. Still sick.
See ever since I have gotten pregnant I am up all night, and during the day I have my son so I sleep when he sleeps but that is it. My hubby helps out as much as possible. I do take my pills at night (I’ve learned that from my first pregnancy) but I feel ill all night, all day. I hate to even think of food, but I force down soups and drink lots of water and orange juice and that stuff is the only stuff I can stomach. Tonight I decided to get brave and ate a sub and I threw all of that up.

    • ANSWER:
Prenatal vitamins can definitely cause nausea. I was going through the same thing not too terribly long ago. You could ask your obgyn to try you on a different pnv. They come in many shapes, sizes, and they even have some chewables. You could also take flinstones vitamins if you can tolerate those. (We see a lot of that in labor & delivery). Also, my Ob suggested refrigerating your vitamins and taking immediately before you go to sleep. Some vitamins should be taken on empty stomach as well. My ob told me if I absolutely couldn’t tolerate them in first trimester, put them up and drag them back out during the second trimester when most of the nausea subsides.

  26. QUESTION:
Does morning sickness cause your stomach to hurt?
I am 8 weeks pregnant and have not had morning sickness yet. I’m NOT complaining, I am very thankful but I am wondering because ever once in awhile my stomach will hurt…kinda like its empty or I’m hungry. Could that be a type of morning sickness???

    • ANSWER:
Morning sickness does not typically involve any stomach pain. If you are having unexplained stomach pain you should get it checked, but if it is just hunger pangs, eat something light.

  27. QUESTION:

  28. QUESTION:
    Morning Sickness Caused by stress?
Ive been thinking a lot about it and following my morning sickness because I havent had to much of it. It seems like everytime I dont see my boyfriend for a long period of time (starting at about week 8) I start to get morning sickness. Symptoms start popping up I dont know if anyone has had this but I start getting a very senstive gag reflex and then it esculates into vomiting a couple of days later. Im wondering if the combined stress from work and not being able to see my loved one is causing the morning sickness? Has anyone else experinced something like this or think it could be possiable? Any tips(Not the saltine cracker tips just like the de-stressing types of tips) and advice would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks Guys. Will add details as well…

    • ANSWER:
I definitely think morning sickness is caused by stress, or at least exacerbated by it. I guess just do whatever relaxes you. Like taking a bath (not a too hot one though of course), listening to soft music, watching a funny movie to get your mind off things, meditate. Also make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. Good luck and I hope you feel better!

I always noticed during my pregnancies that when I was under stress the morning sickness would get a lot worse. Especially when I was worrying about money, or having doubts about the daddy of the baby, etc.

  29. QUESTION:
i asm notpregannat so what could be causing morning vomitingsickness?
For the past few weeks I have had bouts of morning saickness not every day poccassional days just sick in the morning then OK what could this be?????
not stressed, not worried. Not due to drink. Thought originally phelgm but cleared so not that…..

Jusdt happens erratically also been getting really bad headaches.Plan to see doctor but any clues

    • ANSWER:
Sickness/vomiting in the morning is usually stress related. Is it on particular days, for example, on work days rather than weekends/days when you are not working?

Think about what may be causing you stress and what you can do to reduce stress.
And take time getting up in the morning. Eat healthily and drink water throughout the day.
Think about what activities you could take up, like swimming, meeting up with friends etc which will reduce stress and make you feel more fulfilled.

Once you have reduced any anxiety/stress, the vomiting should disappear/reduce.
      Best Wishes.

  30. QUESTION:
Everyone’s saying there’s no way to tell if you will get morning sickness…?
but I found this site that provides a list of risk factors including a history of motion sickness and nausea/vomiting from birth control.

    http://www.babycenter.com/0_morning-sickness-causes-concerns-treatments_254.bc?page=2

    Sorry this isn’t a question.
lol, well I’d just previously asked if there was anything that would indicate a higher chance of motion sickness and everyone said no.
Penelope: That’s interesting (attachment of the sac). What are some other factors?

    • ANSWER:
Pregnancy symptoms vary with each pregnancy. I’ve known many people who never had morning sickness during three pregnancies, then had it bad with the fourth pregnancy, and vice versa. My mom was sick for four of her six pregnancies, and wasn’t sick for the other two.

The article is great, detailing some factors behind morning sickness, but it’s not proven fact. So many factors come into play, such as where the baby’s sac attaches itself (higher, lower, to the front, or the back).

The fact remains that there really in no way to tell, and even if you didn’t have morning sickness with one child, you could very well have it with the next.

  31. QUESTION:
Could morning sickness cause a fever?
i’m wondering if my wife could be pregnant, it’ll have been 2 weeks since the night of conception if she is

    • ANSWER:
Nope, morning sickness does not result in a fever. If your wife has a fever and nausea, she probably has a stomach bug.

  32. QUESTION:
i am ten weeks along and i have a bad cause of morning sickness?
i throw up all day i cant eat and i have the worst cramps ever. i even throw up water. after sex i have real bad leg cramps that last all night. do you think sex is bad for me. help help . i am hurting here. though i am only 18 i need answers before i go crazy

    • ANSWER:
Ok, you have to calm down so you are not stressing yourself and the baby, my morning sickness was bad too, I threw up water as well, I didn’t even know I could throw up water…I had to stay in bed for a week or 2 because everytime I got up I was dizzy and everytime I made an effort to go downstairs to get something to eat, I nearly passed out, so I couldn’t really eat. If you can’t eat try to drink, it’s probably hard, but you are going to need alot of water so you don’t dehydrate and get worse. Drink something with B vitamins, because it helps you get hydrated faster and it’s good for you and the baby. Gatorade, smart water, Vitamin Water, Powerade should all have B vitamins. Try to eat small things throughout the day, try eating some sweet fruits or melons, that helps me. I heard ginger helps ease morning sickness…I never really tried ginger, but you can buy a box of ginger tea or you can eat crystallized ginger, which is kind of like candy. I don’t remember having cramps, I was just really sick. Try taking a warm bath (not hot) and relax, get some fresh air too, that helps alot. If it helps too try watching something that can take your mind off the pain. How many weeks are you? If someone is there to help you tell them to please make you something or get you some gatorade from the store or cut up some fresh fruits.

  33. QUESTION:
    morning sickness cause dehydration?
well all morning i have been sick of anyhting i try to eat/drink – even water! its 28 degrees c today and obviously i am trying to keep well hydrated but cant keep anything down!
anyone got any advice on how to keep even just water down? thanksx
    btw i am 8 weeks x

    • ANSWER:
      Ice did it for me.
I don’t know why and I don’t know how it works, but I would suck on ice all day long.
Try to drink water too, even if you throw it up afterward, just try. The morning sickness will down eventually, just hang in there.

      Congratz.

  34. QUESTION:
My girlfriend is 9 weeks pregnant and has morning sickness all day, what causes it? ?
Is there anything she can do to stop this? how long will it last? she is sick at any moment of the day and has to stay off work, please help.

    • ANSWER:
They don’t know the true cause of morning sickness. In some people it can be really bad, I had it every day through the whole pregnancy for both my pregnancies. Some things might help like ginger, B vitamins, if she craves odd foods like chips, then it might help her – everyone is different. Try the accupressure wrist bands for travel sickness, they might help a bit too.

  35. QUESTION:
    Dangers of Morning Sickness???
Well, i’m worried that me throwing up more than keeping food down is dangerous.. I mean i can eat certain food sometimes, and other times i can’t. I need to know something to ease this morning sickness, cause it seems that my child isn’t getting any nutrtion. Any help on this would be great!

    • ANSWER:
The biggest danger of severe morning sickness is dehydration. The baby will still get everything it needs from your body, so you really need to worry about yourself more. Take your prenatal vits and eat small amounts of food every 2 hrs or so. Try sipping very hot or very cold drinks in between, as it will stop you from dehydrating and it will calm the nausea some. I find peppermint tea works best for me, and munching on small, ice cold watermelon cubes. Before getting up in the mornings, try eating a few crackers or plain biscuits to settle your stomach a bit. You can just keep the packet next to your bed if you have no one to bring it to you.

  36. QUESTION:

I’m 6 weeks 2 days pregnant and feeling horrible. I’ve had all day sickness for the past week. I’ve felt nauseous 24 hours a day and been throwing up most of what I eat. I’m so frustrated and just want to crawl in a corner and cry. No one else understands how bad I feel. To make matters worse, I have a full time office job that I have to try to work through with dealing with the sickness. I have a doctor’s appointment today and I’m hoping they’ll give me something for the constant nausea. I’m just feeling so down right now and don’t know what to do about it. Please share your experiences and what I can do to make myself feel better about the next 2 months of sickness I’m sure I’ll face.

  37. QUESTION:
Why do i get headaches & nausea every morning?
I wake up every morning with terrible headaches and nausea. I sometimes even throw up, but only bile comes out. The headache and nausea would last for about 4 hours in the morning. It makes it hard for me to move and get ready for school. I’ll throw up & then feel better.. but then feel sick again & throw up a half hour later. I’m 16 years old & it’s impossible for me to be pregnant. I’am on birth control for my periods though. but i don’t think it can be a reaction from that cause i’ve been on them for almost a year now & never had this problem before. What are some illness that cause morning sickness besides being pregnant. I’m going to the doctor soon to get tested but for now I would like an idea of what can be wrong with me & maybe I can fix it. Is it cause I don’t eat in the morning? I never eat breakfast.. especially when I’m sick cause I feel like I’ll just throw it up. But it’s odd I only get morning sickness on weekdays when i have to get up super early for school.. never usually on weekends when I wake up late.

    • ANSWER:
      Aside from being pregnant…

It could be anxiety. I get physically ill when i’m anxious.

Because you’re still growing, your hormones care still going kind of crazy.. a birth control what once worked for you, may not work for you now because of your hormone changes. You may want to consider switching!

Also! Not eating breakfast can make you feel very sick, it is important to get even a little something in the morning!

I hope you feel better soon!

  39. QUESTION:
Can the symptoms of morning sickness be caused by anything OTHER then pregnancy, such as an infection?
Hi everyone, I was wondering if the symptoms that occur during morning sickness (vomiting, nausea, being tired…) be caused by something else such as in infection or just having the flu. I did some research and found some websites that give examples of things that can cause same symptoms as morning sickness. My girlfriend is worried she might be pregnant but morning sickness occurs after 4 weeks of intercourse it has only been about 2 and a half weeks and almost close to her period and she will do a blood test soon but I would appreciate any answers. Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
      ooh yes yes yes.

infections can cause nausea most defiantly.

also medications, bad food, the flu, and dehydration

  40. QUESTION:
    SEVERE Morning sickness??
I posted a question this morning about being 6-7 weeks pregnant and at 3am-8am I had severe diarrhea & vomited like crazy. Atleast 16 times! I was counting. I finally ended up in the hospital and they gave me Zofran & IV Fluids. The doctor there said it was morning sickness. Does morning sickness really cause all of that? Diarrhea too?? I really hope not! I was very dehydrated, but can’t keep anything down….
This is our 2nd baby. With our daughter I had the picture perfect pregnancy. No problems of any kind. This one seems to be complete opposite.

    • ANSWER:
I have severe morning sickness..I’m 9 weeks, and have had it since I was 5 weeks. My doctor put me on anti-nausea medication, which seemed to help a bit, but made me super tired. I’d rather sleep though, then be sick 24/7. There are a couple things that will help a bit, but NOTHING will take this away completely..just hope it subsides by the second trimester! I feel your pain though, it’s just horrible.

  41. QUESTION:
    Question about morning sickness?
I am having miserable morning sickness and I don’t know what to do. I read that morning sickness is caused by high levels of estrogen, and excessive estrogen makes your stomach churn, but I seem to be having the opposite problem. Whenever I throw up, there is no acid at all, and sometimes food will just sit there in my stomach for hours, while it churns and makes me feel miserable, until I finally throw up, after which I will feel better. Sometimes I can eat a meal and it all gets digested and I can eat another one, but other times I can’t, or I don’t know what to eat. With my first pregnancy, I needed tasty food, but this time bland seems to be better, but I’m getting tired of soda crackers, and nothing seems to be helping. Having a toddler standing by offering me a bite of banana while I’m bowing before the toilet goddess doesn’t help either (when I need to throw up and can’t, a banana seems to do the trick–one bite and my stomach lets loose! She eats the rest of
    it).

Anyhow, I described my symptoms to my mom (who didn’t really have any morning sickness with either of her kids), and she said it sounded like nerves. Her mom used to worry and then her food would sit for hours in her stomach. But when I’m not pregnant I have a cast iron stomach! I can eat anything except for too much Korean food late at night. I’d rather deal with the labor pains than this long drawn out sickness. At least it only lasts a couple of months (or did with my first). I just want to know if other mothers have experienced this same acid-free issue, or is this something I should talk to my midwife about?
What I’m really asking is this: do other women have the same thing with an empty/no-acid stomach, or am I abnormal?

    • ANSWER:
One thing that helped me a lot was Ginger Ale. I don’t like it, but the ginger taste really does calm your stomach down. And it’s not an overpowering taste, either.

  42. QUESTION:
Do twins tend to cause early/worse morning sickness?
I am a mom of 4, I’ve had 5 singletons before (one surrogacy) and found out I was pregnant a few days ago. I’ve NEVER had morning sickness before, ever-but from probably a few days after conception till now, I’ve been having pretty bad morning sickness. I’m also feeling extremely tired-I’m usually a bit more run down but nothing like this. I’m exhausted-and starving all the time!

Obviously its too early for me to find out but I’m trying to prepare myself-have any of you moms of twins, that had previous kids, notice a lot more morning sickness/fatigue with your multiples? Anything else that could be causing this? Its really annoying! lol

  43. QUESTION:
    help..morning sickness?
Is it normal for a pregnancy test to come out a light positive. I’m six weeks but when I took the test it was a light positive and it wasn’t morning urine, I also haven’t drank anything cause of severe morning sickness. Can someone tell me if its normal? Is there any medication I can get from a doctor for morning sickness. I’ve tried crackers ginger and small meals but I can’t keep anything down.

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

If nothing else works, ask your doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help.

      Good luck!

I thought you just puked once and that was it but being pregnant has taught me wrong lol I like puked up 12 oz of coca-cola in the span of 20 seconds lol
How bad was your guys’s morning sickness?

    • ANSWER:
I had morning sickness for 4 and a half months and it was HELL! I was throwing up everyday all day. And even when there was nothing left in my stomach my body made me throw up my stomach acid. I was in the hospital twice for being dehydrated. I couldnt even keep down water…Nothing. Then finally my doctor put me on diclectin and it helped alot. It didnt get rid of the morning sickness completly but it helped alot. So just be glad your not getting it as bad as me.
Good luck to you and your family =]

  48. QUESTION:
How much weight did “morning sickness” cause you to loose?
I’m 9 weeks pregnant with my second baby . . . with both pregnancies I’ve had a lot of nausea, and tons of food adversions. But with the first, I never lost more than a 1/2 pound or so. This time, I’ve lost 3. I’m not too worried . . . my BMI is still just above 20 (normal is 18.5 to 24.9), so I’m not wasting away, but I was curious how much weight it’s “normal” to loose.

I’ve been able to control the nausea with Zofran, but even with my stomach feeling better it’s a challange to find anything I want to eat. Just hoping that it passes sooner than it did with baby #1 (after delivery . . .)!

    • ANSWER:
      I had sickness really bad.
For over a mth I was being sick every twenty min 24/7 and was very close to being admitted due to dehydration.
It started to ease off at 15 weeks and although I have had some days where I feel nauseous its no where near as bad as it was.
I am not sure exactly what weight I lost but my cheeks were hollow and I did not look healthy.
I tried anti sickness tablets but none worked for me.
I tried so much to ease it and only a few things eased it a tiny bit like:

      Hot blackcurrent,
      Ginger ale,
      Crystallized ginger,
      Plain biscuits,
      Dry crackers,
      Dry toast,

I had to snack very little and often to try and keep something down me.
The main thing is to sip on water all through out the day.

  49. QUESTION:
Can you get morning sickness if you stay awake all night?
I know morning sickness isn’t just in the morning for some women, but does everything going on in your body get triggered by laying down somehow? If you stay active all night will you delay the symptoms of morning sickness, prevent them, or worsen them? What causes it?

    • ANSWER:
When I was pregnant I found that staying up all night and being more active made my “morning” sickness worse.

It is caused my changes in your body, for example your hormonal changes.

thanks so much all the answerrsss are wonderfull. i think i am going to buy a 9 month supply of saltine crackers now and ginger ale <3

    • ANSWER:
At night before you go to bed, put crackers and water by your bedside. Before you sit up in the morning eat a few crackers and drink the water and then lay there for a little while (this might mean you need to get up 30 minutes early everyday for school). This helped me a lot. Stay away from spicy foods. Try to eat small meals 4 to 5 times a day instead of large meals. Carry crackers in your purse so that when you feel sick you can munch on them. Also try eating pretzels (for some reason probably the salt they made the sickness go away but not all of the time). Drinking ginger ale, sprite or 7 up also helped.
