Morning sickness impacts 4 of every 5 women. The signs and severity of morning sickness vary from person to person. Some women experience morning sickness so severe that they are unable to work or carry on with their daily routines. This article talks about three ways to end morning sickness and regain control of your life.

Morning sickness begins roughly the fourth week of pregnancy and normally stops around the 14th and sixteenth weeks of pregnancy. Morning sickness can be an extremely difficult part of pregnancy, especially when it is severe.

So, how can you end morning sickness? 3 Common methods used toend morning sicknessare:

Ginger – Ginger has been used for centuries by medical professionals to heal a range of conditions including nausea from morning sickness and motion sickness. You can use ginger in a variety of forms to treat morning sickness, these include ginger tea, powdered or capsules.

When using gingerfor morningsickness, be sure not to consume more than 1 gram per day.

Eat Smaller Portions – When your belly is empty, sensations of nausea intensify because of increased production of acids in the stomach. To avoid this consume small meals all throughout the day rather than 3 large meals.

If regular foods make you nauseous try eating soups, broths & crackers. In addition, drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

Acupressure – Acupressure is a kind of massage that triggers the body’s key pressure to promote healing. For morning sickness this pressure point is located on the inside of the wrist. Acupressure bands are designed to be worn on the wrist and put gentle pressure on this point. This is why they work so well for getting rid of morning sickness.

These are three popular remedies which are used to end morning sickness. However, the real key toend morning sicknessis to try different things until you find the one remedy or combination of remedies that relieves your morning sickness.

    • ANSWER:
      Thalidomide

Thalidomide, which is also known as Thalomid, is a drug used to fight aggressive cancers, particularly those that have metastasized, or spread.

      Purpose

There are many studies, either in progress or recently completed, that suggest thalidomide can slow or stop the spread of cancer of the brain, breast, colon, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow). Research studies that consider the benefit of thalidomide in treating other cancers are multiplying rapidly. The use of the drug in cancer therapy is likely to increase.

      Description

Thalidomide was first introduced in 1957 primarily as a tranquilizer, a medication prescribed particularly for imparting drowsiness and sleep. Then, it was given to pregnant women to provide them with relief from morning sickness. Soon after being prescribed to pregnant women, thalidomide was linked to death or severe disabilities in newborns. Some children who had been exposed to thalidomide while in the womb (in utero) failed to develop limbs or had very short limbs. Others were born blind or deaf or with other physical problems.

The same action of thalidomide that harms babies may make it useful as a powerful cancer fighter. Thalidomide interferes with the formation of blood vessels. It is called an antiangiogenic drug because angiogenesis refers to the formation of blood vessels. Studies in 2003 reported that thalidomide may use signal repression or have immunosuppression capabilities. This means it can act on the body’s natural immune responses.

Cancers that spread have a lot of blood vessels (are highly vascularized). Thus, when cancer cells are not nourished by a blood supply, they die. One way to stop the spread of cancer is to stop the formation of the blood vessels that carry nourishment to the cancer cells, and that is what thalidomide is thought to do. Researchers also are interested in other activities of thalidomide, particularly the ones that make it capable of eliminating skin eruptions, such as sores, or ulcers, in the mouths of patients with AIDS and leprosy.

      Recommended Dosage

Dosages being used depend on the type of cancer being attacked. For example, in one study, to treat multiple myeloma, a starting dose of 200 mg per day was increased to 800 mg per day over a two-week period.

In a colon cancer study, 400 mg per day of thalidomide were given in combination with the anticancer drug irinotecan. The dose of irinotecan was between 300 and 350 mg per day. Used in combination with irinotecan, thalidomide contributed its own cancer-fighting properties and it also seemed to reduce the side effects of irinotecan.

In a trial using thalidomide to treat prostate cancer, both low doses (as low as 200 mg per day) and high doses (as high as 1200 mg per day) were tried. The patients taking high doses fared somewhat better.

      Precautions

The serious threat thalidomide poses to fetuses cannot be overstated. No pregnant woman and no woman who has any chance of becoming pregnant should take thalidomide. (Only women who have had a hysterectomy or who are at the age of menopause and have been in a menopausal state, which is no menses, or periods, for 24 consecutive months, can be considered as having no chance of becoming pregnant.)

Patients taking thalidomide must meet strict criteria for use. Pharmacies that dispense thalidomide must have special registration.

      Side Effects

Besides the extreme risk thalidomide poses to fetuses, it also produces side effects in the person taking the drug. The side effects of thalidomide are much milder than many other anticancer drugs, and because the drug poses less discomfort than other cancer-fighting drugs, it is particularly attractive to oncologists, or physicians who treat cancer patients.

Among the side effects are erratic heartbeat, swelling (edema), digestive upsets of all sorts, including both constipation and diarrhea, pain in back and neck muscles, and skin problems.

      Interactions

Barbiturates, salts, and esters used to encourage sleep, and alcohol increase the effect of thalidomide’s power of sedation. They should not be taken with the drug. Food interferes with the absorption of thalidomide; it should be taken when the stomach is empty.

  13. QUESTION:
    How to stop morning sickness?
i suffer from horrible morning sickness, from when i wake up till about dinner time.. how do you stop it? have u tried something that you found worked?, iv tried dry biscuits but didnt really help.. i know eating constantly works for me but i cant keep eating..

    thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full.

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, eat a couple of soda crackers or a piece of dry toast. Rise slowly, allowing some time for digestion to occur before you get up.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

Heyyy. I am getting morning sickness really bad. I am 7 weeks today. I havent once actually been sick but i keep needing to and feeling sick, non stop for about 3 weeks now, literally every minuite of day AND night. Its making me really down and i cannot go out or anything.
Any advice on how to make it clear up a bit? Cheers x :) x

    • ANSWER:
You can buy some TUMS (they are full of calcium so your doctor will approve), and keep crackers with you. Try not to eat any spicy foods, as they can make it worse. Also, make sure you drink plenty of fluids (especially water).

If you can, eat small meals throughout the day instead of three big meals. This will help keep your stomach full throughout the day (which causes the morning sickness due to empty stomach; especially at night).

  22. QUESTION:
If you have an early miscarriage, how soon does your nausea/morning sickness stop?
I have read that if you have a miscarraige during the first 3 months, then the morning sickness quits abruptly. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this?? How soon does it stop, like over night, over a few days? How can you tell if it is just “going away” and you are feeling better, or if you are possibly having a miscarraige?? And has anyone experienced it just “going away” before 13 weeks is over, and feeling fine?? any input greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
You can’t tell if you are having a miscarriage just by your symtoms of morning sickness going away. That comes and goes as it pleases. In my experience with having miscarriages, it depends on how far along you are. With my fist one, I was at 12 1/2 weeks when I lost my baby and the morning sickness took a few days to go away as far as I remember. I wasn’t thinking too much about it at the time, but I don’t remember being too sick like I was right before I lost it. But then again, I was on a lot of pain killers during that first week. With the last 3 miscarriages, I was only 6 and 8 weeks along when I lost them. I hadn’t had much morning sickness with any of them, so it went away immediately after losing the pregnancies.

  23. QUESTION:
When did the morning sickness stop?
    Hey Everyone,
I just found out I am expecting again. I am about 5 weeks along. I have had some pretty bad morning sickness the last few days. I never had it too bad with my other kids.
When did the morning sickness finally stop through your pregnancy?

    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I feel for you, i really do! My morning sickness lasted until 6 months, if your sickeness becomes extream to the point where you can no longer keep fluids down or you have lost more that 7% of your body weight, you may be suffering from hyperemesis and will need antiemetics! Congratulations on your pregnanxy hun! ;-)

  24. QUESTION:
My wife is pregnant, should I worry when the morning sickness stop before the first 3 months?
my wife is two month pregnant, and she’s been going through all the morning sickness. Now that she doesn’t feel any of those simptoms, she thinks that something is wrong..Should she worry? or is this normal?

    • ANSWER:
No, Morning sickness varies with every person/pregnancy.

I’m not a ‘sicky’ person and with 2 pregnancies was only physically sick twice with each. Some people are sick passed the 3 months, some all the way through.

Unless she was throwing up none stop and wasn’t able to eat etc, I don’t think there’d be cause for concern… Maybe if you’re still concerned you could call nhs24 or speak to a midwife/dr to set your mind at ease.

  25. QUESTION:
Can morning sickness stop before 3 months?
I’m 8 weeks today and morning sickness is kicking my butt. Although some days are better than others,I find myself counting down to my 12 week mark. Do you think the sickness will end before then?

    • ANSWER:
everyone is different. it could stop before 12 weeks or it could keep going. i was hoping mine would stop at 12 weeks too because everyone was telling me by the second trimester it usually stops but it kept going until nearly 20 weeks.
hopefully your lucky and it stops soon i know how horrible it can feel been sick every day.
congrats and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

  26. QUESTION:
Is it normal to have morning sickness straight for 2 weeks, then just stop?
Can the morning sickness just stop like that? Is that a bad sign?
yesterday, I hadn’t really thrown up like I usually do, but about 5 minutes ago I threw up! ugh!

    • ANSWER:
it might of stopped but it will be back guaranteed.
symptoms come and go in pregnancy so dont worry

  27. QUESTION:
How can you stop Morning Sickness?
Now i know its an all day thing and its horrible….and i have been advised that you cant really stop it…does anyone know if there is anything you can eat drink or take to make it feel better…plus i really cant stomach food at the moment and suggestions on what to eat because im starvinggg! xx

    • ANSWER:
You can’t really stop morning sickness, but you can do things to reduce it, and stop it from getting worse:
Stay away from rich, spicy, or sweet foods, as well as fatty or fried foods. Stick mainly to plain foods like bread and water, and try out things like plain pasta, rice, and potatoes.
Keep bland foods with you incase you feel like you can eat something. This will also stop the acid in you stomach from getting angry, which can also make you throw up.
      Drink a lot of water.
Vitamin B6 and doxylamine are supposed to be good, but speak to your doctor about these first to check that they’ll be safe for you and your baby.

Particular foods which are meant to be good are:
Gingery drinks (Ginger tea, Ginger ale)
      Bananas
      Bread
      Rice
      Potatoes
      Citrus fruits
      Try Children’s vitamins
      Cereal
      Jelly
      Fizzy Pop drinks
      Peppermints
      Watermelon

If you feel like you can’t eat anything, then don’t. The best thing to do is to stick to foods which don’t smell bad to you, because it’s you’re body’s way of saying “If you put that in me, I’m going to make you really sick”. Whatever you do though, don’t stop eating all together because remember you are eating for two – it’s best to have even a little bit of food in your tummy than having nothing in there or constantly throwing up. Hope my advice helped :)
Congratulations on your pregnancy, and Good Luck!

  33. QUESTION:
What made you stop having morning sickness?
I am going to the store and would love to know what made you stop being sick

    • ANSWER:
You can’t stop having it, you can help it, though.
      Crackers & Ginger Ale.

      Home Remedies From the Cupboard
Crackers. Crackers are a pregnant woman’s prize possession (food-wise). They are portable, easy to digest, and inexpensive, and in many cases, they nip nausea in the bud. Plain, whole-wheat crackers, pretzels, plain popcorn, or low-salt soda crackers are your best bets. Nibble on them throughout the day and before going to bed. If morning sickness hits full force in the A.M., feed your mouth before your feet touch the cold floor. Better yet, stay in bed nibbling on crackers for several minutes. Sudden transitions from the horizontal to the vertical often trigger nausea, so go easy in the morning.

Potato chips. Perhaps pregnancy is the only time in a woman’s life when potato chips offer a cure…and can be consumed without guilt. For many women, munching on a few chips (note the word “few”) at the first sign of nausea helps dissipate it. If this cure is for you, stick to regular potato chips and stay away from the fat-free varieties that contain Olestra, the fat substitute. Olestra robs yours body of important nutrients, and it is known to cause diarrhea.

Sometimes pregnancy brings about an over-production of saliva, which can make the mother-to-be sick to her stomach. Nibbling on a handful of salt-and-vinegar chips helps dry up the saliva.

As with any junk food, don’t pig out on chips, even if they are a cure. Nibble only when needed. Some women in fact may find this remedy distasteful since fat is hard to digest and can cause increased stomach upset.

  34. QUESTION:
Sudden stop in morning sickness, should I be worried?
I am 7 weeks pregnant and am just getting over the flu. 2 weeks ago I started to get morning sickness where I would be sick 3 or 4 times a day. It seems to have just suddenly stopped. I don’t feel nauseous anymore…

Should I be worried by this? With my son I had quite severe sickness from 6 to 13 weeks.

    Thanks all xx

    • ANSWER:
I am pretty sure its fine, morning sickness is funny, just because you had it during one pregnancy doesnt mean you will have it in all pregnancies. BUT for peace of mind speak to your midwife, and see if you can get a scan just to be sure. No point worrying about it. Peace and Christmas blessings

  35. QUESTION:
when did your morning sickness stop?
currently 7 weeks 2 days and i’m so sick i feel like im going to die. when did your morning sickness stop and your actually began enjoying your pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
The worst part of it was over by about 13 weeks. It was still around until 20 weeks. I’m 23 weeks now and a day or 2 a week, I still get a quick bout of it but it’s tolerable. Once it went away though, different symptoms showed up like heartburn, racing heart, and I’m very uncomfortable in general. However, saying that, I enjoy my pregnancy much more now because I’m showing and all that good stuff so it’s worth it!

  36. QUESTION:
When did your morning sickness stop?
I am suffering really badly with morning sickness to the extent where I can’t go out shopping or anything because I can never tell when I am going to throw up. At what point in your pregnancy did your morning sickness stop helpp lol x

    • ANSWER:
I can understand how you feel. I used to have to pull over while driving down the road just to puke out my door. I stopped around 6 months but a lot of people say it stops around 3 months. Good luck to you.

  37. QUESTION:
How soon after 12 weeks does morning sickness stop?
I’m 12 weeks on friday and it seems that it’s never going to end..

    • ANSWER:
Normally morning sickness stops at around 14 weeks.

However some people are very unlucky and it continues until 20 weeks or even right through the whole pregnancy.

I am 37 weeks pregnant and had it until around 25 weeks and now still get it occasionally.

Try eating a biscuit or toast in the morning before you get out of bed, ginger tea also helps.
I also wore travel sickness wrist bands all day which helps the nausea.

Good Luck, I hope that you feel better soon x

  38. QUESTION:
will my morning sickness stop after i take the first pill of abortion ?
i haven’t eaten in 3 days and if i do i throw up. i have to go to hospital to take the first pill of abortion on wednesday.
the first pill stops the pregnancy from continuing. im havin an abortion because im only 14. no need for the nasty comments ;) .
i havent thought about keeping the baby as on the 13th of march im going into hospital for a lifesaving operation. the doctors wont do the operation if im pregnant.

    • ANSWER:
You should feel relief almost immediately, so by the end of day Wednesday the nausea should stop.

PLUS… Please take care of yourself and don’t let the negative comments get to you. Most of the people who post negative comments really just want to punish women for taking control of their lives. The bible says nothing about abortion and in fact when talking about Judas says, “It would have been better for him not to be born.” Additionally, these people are for the most part uninformed about the function of the body and conception. Almost 2/3 of fertilized eggs never make it past the next menstrual cycle. Additionally, almost any woman who takes the birth control pill has had an abortion if she is functionally fertile and sexually active as the bcp doesn’t stop ovulation. Again, take care of yourself, and my best to you. Good Luck!

  43. QUESTION:

i am 5 months pregnant and the other day my mother-in-law was rubbing my belly and i threw up on her. even though she said it was ok i still feel terrible about it =( when will the morning sickness stop

    • ANSWER:
Who knows! Everyone is different. It could last throughout your whole pregnancy, stop after the first trimester, or you could not have it at all. Try to avoid foods you know make you sick or naseous, have some crackers on you at all times, and water. Take along a toothbrush and some toothpaste and mouthwash.. and a bag for the car.

  44. QUESTION:
Is there anything I can take to stop my morning sickness?
Im pregnant and not only do I get morning sickness every morning but sometimes during the day, is there anything I can take? I’m seriously fed up with constantly feeling sick and being sick please, please, please help!!! :)

    • ANSWER:
There is a prescription med that can alleviate your morning sickness (though I’m not sure about eliminating it completely) but you would need a doctor’s prescription and they don’t like to hand it out unless its absolutely necessary (like you’re vomiting so much you’re dehydrating and risking the pregnancy).

The good thing is, for most women, the nausea eases up in the second trimester.

I hope it passes for you quickly.

  45. QUESTION:
Stop/prevent morning sickness in school !?
I’m about 7 weeks pregnant and during my spring break last week my morning/pretty much all day sickness really got bad. I was throwing up everyday but tomorrow I start school again and I need some tips to prevent or stop morning sickness, like foods or certain candies that help! I don’t wanna throw up in class :/

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

If nothing else works, ask your doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help. If you’re really feeling horrible and can’t keep anything down, your doctor may be willing to see you earlier.

      Good luck!

  47. QUESTION:
Hi, how to stop morning sickness?
When I found out I was pregnant (2 weeks ago) I am 6 weeks pregnant now and just started this morning sickness, but it is unbearable and I cannot focus properly when I’m studying for my course work. How can I stop with this? Please help :/

    • ANSWER:
      Hope this helps out. Congrats!!

-Avoid warm places as heat can increase the nausea feelings.

-Take naps during the day (but not right after eating). Tiredness plays a big part in morning sickness.

      -Get enough sleep at night.

-Get out of bed slowly in the morning.

-Try eating plain crackers or dry cereal before you get out of bed in the morning.

-Open windows or turn on exhaust fans when cooking and after meals.

-Cooking in the microwave usually produces less odors.

-Ginger in capsules form 250 mg. three times daily can be beneficial. Ginger has long been associated with alleviating nausea. You can also get the benefit of using ginger by chewing on crystallized ginger or sucking on ginger hard candies.

-Silly as it sounds, carry a handkerchief with a few drops of a non nausea causing essential oil (lemon for example) in it and breath through it if you can’t get away from the smell that is bothering you.

-Avoid greasy or spicy foods as they often cause nausea or heartburn.

-Eat what you want when you want it. Your cravings will not lead you the wrong way.

-Have frequent protein snacks. (Low fat meats and seafood, nuts, eggs and beans are high protein.)

-Eat smaller meals every two hours or so.

-Eating something salty before a meal can help you “make it through” a meal.

-Do not drink fluids with your meals.

-Non caffeinated teas like peppermint and ginger can help came nausea.

-Drink small amounts of fluids regularly though out the day to avoid dehydration.

-Do not skip meals if you can help it.

-Try taking your prenatal vitamins later in the day. Pregnancy Plus prenatal vitamins are smaller in size and are less likely to upset your stomach. You may also want to consider taking your prenatal vitamin at night before you go to bed to give it a chance to be absorbed overnight.

-Avoid spicy and fried food – both eating and smelling it can increase your nausea.

-Cold food may have less nausea inducing smells associated with them.

Mine was like that. I had horrible morning sickness and it finally went away at about 9 weeks. Then the other night and the next day, I had it all over again. • ANSWER:

Morning illness is a genuine curse in early pregnancy. It can take away the pleasure and excitement of early pregnancy. There are numerous ideas about what to eat if you’re going through nausea. Below you’ll find some of the most handy diet pointers that may help reduce queasiness, puking, food dislike and food longings in pregnancy.

Odour plays a big part in early morning nausea. Cold food has a tendency to smell less so you might find cold foods simpler to put up with than hot food. – early morning sickness is surely influenced by your blood sugar levels.

Thus it’s important that you keep them as stable as practical. Eat lots of protein at every meal and have a protein based break before bed and even in the middle of the night if you wake. There’s some proof to suggest the reason morning illness is typically worse in the morning is actually because your blood sugar level dropped overnite. – try and avoid foods which make your blood sugar rise to quickly and afterwards fall.

Foods like fruit juice sweet snacks, highly ready-made foods including cereals and any food that contains processed flour. – Eat little meals often with plenty of protein. – don’t be disturbed if the foodstuff you are selecting don’t appear too balanced. It’s better to keep it down, than have a wonderfully balance meal down the loo. – Keep a break next to the bed and have it twenty mins before getting out ( not necessarily possible, when you’re bursting for the loo. ) cut back on foods that are greasy as they’re harder to digest. – Foods that are high in fat are tougher to digest and can make queasiness and barfing worse.

try to have regular tiny drinks ( tea, soup, cool drinks ) as gulping down massive volumes of water can also increase the feelings of queasiness. It is miles better to have some liquid in your belly if you’re going to barf. O if you’re taking prenatal vitamin, your system will handle it miles better later in the day and even at bed time than it’ll in the earlier part of the day. It’s also worth using one, only for two weeks with less iron, which can sometimes be especially vicious on your digestive tract. Please don’t scale back your iron augmentation if you believe or have been confirmed to be sick.

Ginger can be truly useful to ease early morning nausea. – while it may appear obvious avoid any food ( or non food ) that you find triggers your revulsion. – Suck or sniff a lemon when you hit a wave of revulsion. – Mint tea and mint gum can be particularly calming to the digestive system.

Wrigleys gum can help if exorbitant spit is a difficulty. Overall it is a good idea to hear your instincts. If you’re driven to eat a certain food, then eat it. If the concept or hint of a food causes you to feel sick then it’s best evaded. Attempt to be as balanced as practicable but don’t worry if you can’t. If you’re unable to keep anything down it’s vital to talk to your health-care supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Any tips for morning sickness?
I was wondering if anyone has any tips for morning sickness. Saltines haven’t worked. Ginger ale gave me to much gas. So far chewing gum has helped the most but still not the best.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
i sufferd like mad with morning sickness at all times of the day!
Ok if you can get someone to bring you a cuppa in bed before you get up in the morning it helps for a start. also a plain biscuit(cookie) or plain toast. When that has settled you might feel well enough to get up.
Other things I found helped a biit were anything with ginger, not the fizzy drinks particularly, but you can for instance get ginger biscuits (cookies) or eat crystalised ginger.
I found I went off coffee and mostly tea too. Peppermint tea was very settling and I also found I liked jasmine tea. It is such a delicate flavour.
I was ill all the way through all three of my pregnancies so these were the things that helped me!
Try not to eat too much at a time, but also not to have too long gaps between snacks! I found little and often the key. I carried round something plain with me…digestives, biscuits (you call them let me see what…humm, sorry something grhams? You know the ones you grind up for the base of cheesecakes!) They are excellent.
You need startch fixes, so I found pasta was great, as was fairly dry toast, and rice.
You want to avoid fats for some reason they make you feel worse.
hope some of these work for you.
      good luck!

  2. QUESTION:
    Tips for Morning Sickness symptoms?
I’m almost 8 weeks pregnant and have started to feel the effects of Morning Sickness. It’s not too bad yet, and I haven’t actually vomited yet. But there are times when I feel nauseous and can’t cope with it. Does anyone out there have any tips/tricks that worked for them?

    Thanks ladies!

  3. QUESTION:
does anyone have any tips for beating morning sickness?
Im 8 weeks pregnant and morning sickness is in full swing.
any tips to beat it ?

    • ANSWER:
This is a really difficult time; I totally understand what you are going through. When I had morning sickness (I am 17 weeks in my first pregnancy; morning sickness went away at about 12 weeks) I never thought I was going to make it through the day.

The best advice that I got from the OB nurse was to eat absolutely anything that I could keep down. For about 6 weeks I was only able to eat certain things-for example the sight and smell of both beef and chicken made me sick to my stomach, so I tried to supplement the lost protein with things like cheese, nuts and milk. I also learned never to force myself to eat anything that I couldn’t stand the smell of.

I also caught on that I felt the worst when my stomach was empty. One moment you might be feeling okay and the next you are hit with a bout of nausea. I learned to always have food on hand. Throw some granola bars or crackers in your purse for when you are out and you need food right away.

The secret is-when you are feeling so horrible and nauseous, much of the time, eating is the LAST thing that you want to do. And even the sight of food might make you sick; yet you need to eat in order for it to improve a little. I also learned that even now, when I have been over my morning sickness, I still get nauseous when my stomach is empty. The nausea will go away within seconds/moments of eating something.

I remember feeling so awful only a few weeks ago that whenever anyone told me that I would ‘feel better in a few weeks’ I would get really upset, because the way I felt, I thought it would never ever go away. I have never found a complete ‘cure’ for morning sickness, yet you will learn these little things that make it bearable. You will start to feel better in a few weeks, and it will be a distant memory of the past :-)

      Good luck to you!

  4. QUESTION:
Does Anyone Have Morning Sickness Tips?
I am currently 2 months pregnant and am loosing the Morning (Afternoon an Night) Sickness Battle so far, do any of you moms out there have some good tips that may have worked for you? I have already tried the Lemon Juice an Lemon trick as well as the Ginger Ale an Soda Crackers so if you have ideas please do share I would appreciate the help!

    • ANSWER:
-Don’t allow yourself to become hungry.
-Protein is supposed to help nausea. Try eating peanut butter on toast with a carbonated beverage before getting out of bed in the morning.
-Do not drink large amounts of water with meals or for an hour after eating.
-Seabands. They are fabric wrist bands with hard plastic buttons that push into a pressure point on your inner wrist. Inexpensive, but a little uncomfortable.
-Hard candy…try Preggie Pops from Motherhood Maternity or Babies R Us, or peppermint candy.
-Take your prenatal vitamins mid-day instead of morning or at night

I’m in my third trimester and still suffering from all-day sickness. The only thing that has worked for me is prescription Phomethazine. It is safe to take during pregnancy, so don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for an anti-nausea medication if it becomes necessary.

Hope you feel better. It does go away…eventually.

  5. QUESTION:
    any tips for morning sickness?
although its not morning sicknes, its all day sickness!! i am wearing the sea band wrist bands and there not helping at all :( ive tries toast cos someone told me tht helped… but it didnt. anyone else got any tips thats worked for them that i could try? its making me not enjoy pregnancy at all! i didnt enjoy my first one either thanks to the sickness! thanks
i work in a pharmacy but never heard of zofran… whats the drug name?

    • ANSWER:
poor you, i had hyperemesis for the whole duration of my second pregnancy and probably spent about half of it in hospital on drips so i understand. from my experience nothing worked that anyone said-not even the anti sickness pills and i tried quite a number of different ones. you could try to keep a packet of dry biscuits next to you at all times and when you have a moment where you feel you could keep something down, have a nibble. although it was a traumatic pregnancy and i swore id never have another 5 years on and im now 19weeks pregnant with my third and not had any sickness this time, so just look forward to your baby coming along and the future…..as hard as it may seem at this moment in time. good luck :)

  6. QUESTION:
    Morning sickness tips?
Any of you pregnant mom’s out there have any tips for morning sickness?

    • ANSWER:
You shouldn’t go for too long without eating as this is when you will feel sick so carry a snack with you at all times. Have some dry biscuits or bread by the bed to have before you get up and move around. lots of small meals, a large one can be disastrous! Apparently ginger combats nausea so ginger tea and ginger biscuits are supposed to help, although they didn’t work for me. Good luck, the first trimester is the worst, you will feel fine when its over.

  7. QUESTION:
Help! Do you have an tips for morning sickness?
I am experiencing nausea 24 hours a day and it’s awful. I saw my GP yesterday and he was no help at all. Despite the fact that i am losing weight because i am hardly eating and am dizzy due to lack of food, this doesn’t seem to matter. All he said was ‘ oh well, most women find nausea disappears by 12 weeks’. That is another 5 weeks away!!

Can you help? Do you have any tips on how to cure nausea?

    Thanks so much.

    • ANSWER:
I really feel for you. Doctors can be totally useless with all aspects of pregnancy (especially male ones) it’s just not straight-forward, by-the-book, or scientific enough for them, lol.
Try taking some water crackers or ginger biscuits to bed with you at night, and eating some before you get out of bed, try not to make jerky movements, and smell food before you eat it, if the smell makes you feel a little funny, it will likely make you sick-try to stick to plain foods, and don’t beat yourself up if you find it difficult to maintain a balanced diet, just eat things that you can keep down (even if it is only plain pasta/soft bread) baby will get all it needs from supplies you have built up, and once the nausea has passed, there will be plenty of time to eat right then.
      Good luck x

    • ANSWER:
My friend had horible morning sickness during her entire prenancy. Her doc told her it had something to do with blood sugar and she should eat small snacks throughout the day including if she woke up during the middle of the night or something. So she kept crackers/cookies by her bedside and would eat a couple when she woke up.

  11. QUESTION:
Any tips on morning sickness? ?
I’m about 2 months pregnant and my morning sickness has recently gotten really bad. It has become very difficult for me to sleep during the night because I feel so sick. I’ve been having to drive my husband to work because our other car broke down and I can barely make it back to the house without getting sick. I’ve been drinking a lot of water but I can’t snack on little things during the night because this upsets my stomach and gives me cramps. So if anyone has anymore ideas please let me know

If you do get dehydrated, don’t wait–go to the emergency room and get fluids intravenously. It’s not fun, but it will make you feel better and break the vicious cycle of dehydration.

      Good luck!

  12. QUESTION:
Any tips for bad morning sickness?
I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant and having terrible morning/all day sickness! It’s morning, afternoon and evening with vomiting. Anyone know of anything to help settle it?

    • ANSWER:
You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some
food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full. Here are some other dietary suggestions for preventing or relieving nausea:

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Avoid foods and smells that trigger nausea.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

Acupuncture has been one of the best techniques to cure morning sickness.

Generally morning sickness is not dangerous. But if you get dehydrated,it may affect your baby.

      Hope it helps

  13. QUESTION:
    Tips for morning sickness?
Hi – I found out on Saturday that I was pregnant :)

I was hoping I may get away with sickness but no suck luck. I was sick twice last night – and didn’t get much sleep with nausea also. It was horrible. Im scared to eat anything now!!! I’m only 5 weeks and 2 days!!!

Any tips to help it? Also – how long does it last?

    Thanks in advance! :)

    • ANSWER:
Hi, firstly Congratulations on your pregnancy hun! X

And morning sickness is different for eveyone but for me it lasted into my 14th week. This I think is the same for most people as this is when the hormone levels tend to stabilize and level off. The only thing that seemed to help me was to eat ginger nut biscuits. A woman in my work told me and it really worked. But I am unsure whether it was just psychological.

  14. QUESTION:
    Any Morning Sickness Tips?

If it is Morning Sickness, does anyone have any tips for minimising the affects?

Please just let me know any tips and not give me advice about whether or not I am pregnant.

    Thanks in advance!!
Thanks to everyone who has replied.

I took a HPT and got a BFP.

My husband and I are so thrilled. Just have to wait a bloody week for doctors appointment for blood confirmation!

We’re so very excited about becoming parents!!!

    • ANSWER:
A tip a friend gave me that worked wonders for me is to keep some dry crackers beside your bed and eat a couple before you get up. My sister in law swore by ginger tea when she was pregnant. I also carried around some ginger biscuits (cookies), the sweetness and the ginger helped me a lot.

Oh and buckets of baby dust to you ;)

  16. QUESTION:
    Tips to manage morning sickness?
    Guys, I’m here to beg.

How did you get through morning sickness?!

I need tips, or better yet, a cure. I’ve been sick for almost a month now and they say it COULD go for the whole time. It’s wearing down my resolve not to take any kind of meds to help.

I know the crackers, small meals frequently, cheese (?? that did NOT help) remedies. But have you got anymore?

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Ginger Ale helped me a lot. Just sipping it, not gulping it down. I’d drink that before I even got out of bed some mornings (I kept a bottle by my bed).

The small meals didn’t do a thing for me, either.

Popsicles helped me. So did hard candies like Jolly Ranchers and Life Savers.

Also, I found that certain smells (even GOOD smells) made me feel sick. I kept some fresh Lavender and Basil in my purse and whenever I’d get around something that smelled weird, I’d sniff the Lavender & Basil LOL I’m sure I looked weird, but I’d have looked weirder if I was puking.

  17. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any tips for dealing with morning sickness?
I am 16 weeks pregnant and my morning sickness does not want to go away. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
      ginger ale
      ginger candies
      ginger cookies
      lemonade
      lemon popsicles
      Preggo pops
      suck on peppermints
      drink peppermint tea

Keep something on your tummy at all times. Letting your tummy get empty makes you more likely to get nausious. Keep some saltines or cereal bars or something in your purse. Keep crackers on your bedside table. If you wake at night, eat a couple. Have hubby bring you a snack before you even get out of bed in the morning. Protein foods can also help. Carry a handkerchief that has been sprinkled with peppermint essential oil. (Put it into a ziplock bag in your purse.) Sniff it if you feel queasy.

  19. QUESTION:
Any tips for making morning sickness go away??
I am 8 weeks pregnant and already suffering pretty bad morning sickness (more like all day sickness)

    • ANSWER:
Keep something in your tummy…usually bland things like crackers or toast work well. If your stomach is empty, you’ll tend to feel sick.

Try not to drink too much water too fast–sip on it, and perhaps include a carbonated beverage to sip on. That helped me.

You can try ginger candies or peppermints to help soothe your stomach as well. Ask your doctor about taking extra vitamin B6.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the morning sickness other than time (you’ll probably feel better once the second trimester rolls around.) For now, just relax when you can, and eat whatever you can handle (even if it isn’t super healthy).

      Good luck!

  20. QUESTION:

  21. QUESTION:
    Morning Sickness Tips Please?!?!!?
I work morning shifts 9-11 and then somedays I have to go back to work from 4:30-6:30 (I work with a company for home health care thats why my schedule is like that) and it is so hard for me to get up in the morning. When I do get up I am sooooooo nauseated most of the morning. Is there ANYTHING I can do to help with this?

    Please help!!!

    • ANSWER:
I (thankfully) didnt experience too bad morning sickness myself but I have heard that if you eat a biscuit or something while still in bed before you get up, it helps.

Try an Arnotts Ginger nut biscuit because ginger is said to be great for nausea during pregnancy.

      All the best

  22. QUESTION:
Any tips on extreme morning sickness?
I was really sick w/my 1st pregnancy, but this 2nd one is killing me. I am having to pull over on the side of the road just to puke. My extremely energetic 20 month old obviously doesnt understand mommy is sick and sure doesnt help any! I’m trying warm tea which helps some, but I just can’t go on like this much longer, I am in tears half the day because I am so nauseous and pukey. Please does anyone have any good advice for surviving this??

    • ANSWER:
I too had morning sickness w/ my first, but it didn’t even compare to the morning sickness (All day sickness) I had w/ my current pregnancy. I would throw up all the time, and just like you, even when I was driving. It was awful. I tried everything I could think of…eating crackers before I got out of bed, drinking sprite or 7 up to try and settle my stomach, eating small frequent meals…nothing helped. I ended up talking to my doctor about it, she prescribed me a medication called Compazine. It definitely stopped my throwing up, but I still felt nauseous. I ended up decided not to take it because it made me feel worse to feel sick to my stomach but not have anything come up. I just made sure to drink lots of water/fluids to make sure that I stayed hydrated. I ended up losing about 10lbs during the first trimester. My morning sickness finally went away between 16-17 weeks.

Talk to you doctor. There may be other medicines out there that you can try besides the one I took. Good luck…and hopefully the morning sickness will subside soon.

  23. QUESTION:
6 weeks pregnant. Tips to ease Morning Sickness?
Its just kicked in the last few days. And today it is awful.
I cant even contemplate eating anything, but I feel weak for it.

Does anyone have any tips that helped to make u feel better?
Im already underweight, and really dont want to loose anymore, so i really need to eat!
I work in an office 9-5, so eating little and often isnt really possible.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It’s very difficult if you work in an office where you can’t eat at your desk but i find that eating small amounts often does help keep it at bay. If i let myself get too hungry i just feel worse. Drink plenty of water and get lots of rest. If your not allowed to eat at your desk then i’d explain the situation to your boss or if you don’t wan to do that then try drinking something more filling like cup-a-soup or milkshakes. Hope it passes soon, good luck. x

  24. QUESTION:
Tips on getting through morning sickness?
I just found out i was pregnant a few weeks ago, and the morning sickness started this week. I’m a mess. My husband is sick of me being sick all day all night, and so am I. I know it’s not a curable thing or anything, but I’m just looking for some tips here.

    I can’t eat, and I know it’s not healthy.

    Help please.
A few of you have had some things about my husband. This is the first time for both of us, and we’re both stressed, I know that’s not good for the baby or us, but we’re trying.

The thing about him, is he’s kind of queasy. Which is strange in a man, I know, but it’s him. And he really doesn’t like having to follow me into the bathroom to get me water or a towel or whatever.

Okay, you guys have all given great answers!

    • ANSWER:
Try not to stress. Stress makes it worse. It sounds like you are stressed from your husband’s attitude and your worry that it is not healthy. Your body knows what it is doing. Many women go through this and eat hardly anything for the first month or two they are pregnant and the baby is fine. This early on the baby has very little nutritional requirements. When it is time, your body will signal you with hunger and let you eat what you need for your baby.

Tell your husband you need extra love and support now. Even if you need to stay in bed all day and can’t cook or clean he should understand this and not give you a hard time. You are carrying his child and now is his time to step up as a man and take care of you.

Also, eat foods that are bland. Plain toast, rice, apples, bananas, crackers, etc. Sipping carbonated beverages may help settle your stomach too. Avoid OJ and milk right now, those might upset your stomach. And ginger is supposed to fight nausea so try to find some crystalized ginger. They will probably have this at a specialty store like Trader Joe’s.

Eat small meals often. Don’t let your stomach get empty because when it is empty is when you become nausous. Make yourself eat a little something every hour or so, even if it is just a few crackers.

Remember this will pass. It can be hell for a month or so but it rarely lasts beyond the first trimester.

  29. QUESTION:
I am 7 weeks pregnant and experiencing morning sickness. Any one have any tips that help?
I am 7 weeks pregnant and have just started experiencing morning sickness. I had it severely with my 1st pregnancy that eventually they put a pick line in my arm and gave me at home iv’s. I do not want to have to go through this again. I am new to there being a cure for my morning sickness and would like some help as to what to do. If you have any tips to what got you through your morning sickness to share I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
First of all, once you ARE 6-7 weeks IS when morning sickness actually starts to happen..lol

I never threw up once when i was pregnant, but during the first 2 months I did feel nueseated 24/7

      This really works–trust me,,

Take a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (after eating something lite), and this prevent vomiting, cures even the stomach flu, even food poisening!

It takes gross, but gulp it down..and I swear by this.it even helps cures heartburn and other problems–plus its natural and wont harm the fetus. ;)

Again, take it everytime you feel sick–and within 15 min it should go away,

If it taste too gross, get a cup of ice cold coke (soda), and pour the Apple Cider Vinegar in it, and drink it like you are taking a shot of alcohal..works wonders.

  30. QUESTION:
    Morning sickness advice and tips?
I had morning sickness with my last pregnancy. Does that mean I will get it for sure again? And, any tips on how to stop it?

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

If nothing else works, talk to your doctor and see if you can get antinausea medication like reglan or zofran.

      Good luck!

I’m in week 8 of my first pregnancy and for the last week or so the nausea has gotten worse and I’m feeling like I’m spending half of my day draped over a toilet. I’m just wondering if anyone out there has some tips for getting through this. Also, in your experience how long did this last for? Thank you so much for any advice/words of wisdom you can offer!

Flat lemonade before you get out of bed, and hobnobs too.
And then make sure you have a snack at least every hour. Like hobnobs.

  39. QUESTION:
Morning Sickness (any home remedies or tips to relieve it)?
My cousin is laying on the floor right now (she just plopped down where she was playing with the twins) overcome with a bought of queasiness. I feel sympathetic because her morning sickness is pretty bad (she’s 9 weeks pregnant). Is there anything I can give her or do for her to relieve it?

    • ANSWER:
“Drink ginger tea for morning sickness? That’s just an old wives’ tale.” True, an old wife is likely to tell you to drink ginger tea, but consider this…those old wives had probably morning sickness themselves!

The bad news is that the nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy, commonly called morning sickness, affects about half of all pregnant women. The good news is that there are many remedies to try and if one of them doesn’t work for you, very likely another one will. If all else fails, just hang on to the fact that most women are finished with morning sickness by the beginning of their fourth month.

We’ve collected a whole variety of the various home remedies that may help with soothing your morning sickness. There is bound to be something here to help no matter whether your morning sickness consists of a little morning nausea or the all day eat and throw up variety. However, be sure to contact your caregiver if the nausea and vomiting becomes unbearable or causes you to lose weight.

      Ø Get plenty of rest.

      Ø Chew your food thoroughly.

Ø Make sure your stomach is never completely empty. Carry fruit, cheese and/or crackers around with you to nibble on throughout the day.

Ø Keep a snack by the bed for when you get up during the night to visit the bathroom or soothe one of the kids.

Ø Also keep a snack by the bed to eat before you lift your head from the pillow in the morning. Then, get up slowly.

Ø Eat a high protein snack before bed at night.

Ø Eat a diet high in carbohydrates and protein, low in fats.

      Ø Eat salty, crunchy foods.

Ø Sniff a fresh lemon peel.

Ø Make sure your breads and crackers are whole grain.

Ø Drink wheat germ dissolved in warm milk, a few teaspoons every hour.

Ø Take 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon honey in cold water before bed.

Ø Avoid strong odors and stuffy or smoky rooms.

Ø Suck a piece of peeled ginger root.

Ø Drink red raspberry leaf, peppermint, squaw vine or spearmint tea.

Ø Drink ginger tea made by boiling some ginger root in water. Strain it and add honey to sweeten.

Ø Wear motion sickness bands on your wrists.

Ø To avoid actually vomiting, try grasping your tongue with a piece of cloth and pulling gently but firmly.

Ø If you are vomiting a lot, try limiting your diet to a single food, one that you know you can tolerate. Add one additional food per day as you can tolerate them.

Ø Put three drops of lavender essential oil and one of peppermint in a diffuser or humidifier to scent the air.

Ø Place a cool lavender scented compress on your forehead and a warm lavender compress over your rib cage.

Ø Get a massage with chamomile massage oil.

Ø Drink liquids between rather than with meals.

      Ø Avoid greasy foods.

Ø Snack on ginger snap cookies, homemade and with real ginger, if possible.

      Ø Chew gum.

      Ø Get regular, gentle exercise.

Ø Increase your intake of vitamin B6.

Ø Try taking your vitamins later in the day.

Ø Try changing your iron supplement.

Ø Give in to your food cravings.

      Ø Sip a carbonated beverage.

Ø Get plenty of fresh air.

Ø Try tart flavors; lemonade, sour pickles, etc.

Ø Don’t brush your teeth immediately after eating.

Ø Lie completely still with your eyes closed.

Ø Suck on frozen popsicles, especially lemonade.

Saltine crackers were my best friends when I felt sick.

  41. QUESTION:
Anyone have tips to deal with morning sickness?
I’m only 7 weeks, but the past week has been HELL. I cant open the fridge without gagging, wake up every morning throwing up, cant stand the smell of the litter box when everyone else is saying it doesnt smell, and i am sick 24/7! I’ve tried ginger ale, sea bands, eating crackers, staying hydrated, EVERYTHING google told me to do. I’m desperate for some different advice! Anyone?? Help!!
no crackers and ginger ale didnt work sadly ): i even went out and bought those motion sickness bands and nothing! im going crazy, and because im so sick im always in a terrible mood and never want to leave my house, so i feel awful for my fiance who has to deal with my moodiness lol. everything i read keeps saying the same thing, and none of it seems to work. im debating on calling my doctor to see if there is anything he can give me, but i reallllly dont want to take meds, especially in the 1st trimester as i miscarried before ):
thank you!! i’ll definitely give those pops a try, babies r us isnt too far thankfully (:

      Good luck!

  42. QUESTION:
Tips to help with morning sickness?
I am almost 9 weeks pregnant, and have had horrible nausea and vomitting for about 4.5 weeks now. I was prescribed an anti-nauseant/anti-vomitting medicine a while ago, but find it doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried a lot of the typical things that are supposed to help (like eating small, bland meals; eating crackers before getting out of bed; drinking ginger ale, avoiding fatty, greasy foods, etc.) but I’m not finding much relief. I’m wondering if any of you out there had any special “tricks” that worked for you…things that may not be heard of necessarily, but you’d swear by it? At this point, I’m willing to try pretty much anything. Any help would be appreciated.

And FYI, I am ensuring that I’m getting enough fluids so I don’t become dehydrated. I don’t want to do anything to hurt the baby…I just want to feel better!

    • ANSWER:
Have you tried ensure? It helped me. Since it wasn’t food, I was able to keep it down and it had vitamins and nutrients to help til my stomach got better. Also try drinking milk before a meal, if it stays down, then eat a small meal, and see if that helps. Sometimes milk will coat your stomach and help.

I have had very bad morning sickness anyone have any helpful tips for me…?
I am 22 weeks pregnant and have had morning sickness the WHOLE TIME!!! I have tried eating crackers, and toast and laying in the bed for 30 minutes before i got up. I have tried taking a cool bath as soon as i wake up, taking my prenatal vitamins at night before i go to bed because it would make me sick during the day. I can’t function like I want to. My doctor told me not to work until it gets better. And I have also tried to drink ginger tea when I wake up too. Nothing seems to work… PLEASE HELP ME!!!

    • ANSWER:
Sorry to hear that you are still sick! I had morning sickness from 4 weeks and am now 38 weeks and am still getting sick so hopefully you’ll be done sooner than I was! My doctor told me to take a vitamin b12 and half a unisom (I would talk to your doctor before starting this though!) I didnt try it because I didnt want to take anything if at all possible….However, to keep the nausea at bay while I was at work I used the preggo pops to suck on, and if I kept food in my stomach that helped a little bit too, try to eat a few smaller meals. Hopefully it will go away soon!!!

  49. QUESTION:

  50. QUESTION:
Can anybody help with my morning sickness?
I’m not even 7 weeks yet and I could die. I’ve never been so miserable in my life! I can’t eat, drink, leave the house. And it lasts ALL DAY. I usually stop throwing up around 3 in the afternoon, but I still feel terrible. I work in restaurant and it’s unbearable at this point smelling everything and having to puke all the time. I know I’m not the first person to get morning sickness, I just feel so disgusting. Anyone have any tips for getting through it?

    • ANSWER:
Try and find different things that you can eat. I had morning sickness pretty bad and the only things that helped me was apples and wheat thins. I pretty much just lived on that for the first few weeks. Also, if you have morning sickness bad enough I know that there is a medicine that your doctor can prescribe for you that is specifically for morning sickness. Good luck!

End Morning Sickness
