Morning sickness is the nauseated feeling you get during pregnancy. Morning sickness, which can actually occur at any time of the day, can really dampen your excitement about being pregnant. Morning sickness, also called nausea, vomiting of pregnancy or pregnancy sickness, affects between 50 a 00004000 nd 95 percent of all pregnant women as well as some women who use hormonal contraception or hormone replacement therapy. Morning sickness can occur at any time of the day, though it occurs most often upon waking, because blood sugar levels are typically the lowest after a night without food. Morning sickness usually starts in the first month of the pregnancy, peaking in the fifth to seventh weeks, and continuing until the 14th to 16th week. For half of the sufferers, it ends by the 16th week of pregnancy. Some women suffer intermittent episodes throughout their pregnancy. NVP usually develops between the 4th and 6th week of pregnancy. In half of the cases it ends by the 14th to 16th week of pregnancy. Unfortunately, some women have NVP throughout their entire pregnancy.

The most severe form of NVP is called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). HG is considered a rare complication of pregnancy. The percentage of pregnant women afflicted ranges from 0.3% to 2%. Women afflicted by morning sickness typically avoid “bitter, pungent, highly-flavored, and novel foods,” foods which are likely to contain toxins. Foraging people are at an unusually high risk of ingesting plant toxins, due to wild plants being a substantially larger part of their diet than agricultural or industrial people’s. About 50% of all pregnant women will experience some form of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Trying to eat a healthy diet can become very difficult when you’ve also got to deal with problems like food aversions, a sensitive sniffer, and a growling, churning stomach. Morning sickness can only become a problem for your baby if you can’t keep any foods or fluids down and begin to lose a lot of weight.Eat small, frequent meals and snacks throughout the day so that your stomach is never empty.

Some women find that carbohydrates are most appealing when they feel nauseated, but one small study found that high-protein foods were more likely to ease symptoms. Wearing “acupressure” wrist bands, which are sometimes used by passengers on boats to prevent sea sickness, may help some women who have morning sickness. Taking powdered ginger root in capsules provided some relief, but be sure to talk to your provider before taking ginger supplements. Try taking your prenatal vitamins with food or just before bed. Flat Sprite&reg is supposedly great at keeping the stomach from churning. Avoid foods and smells that seem to trigger nausea. Sometimes this will be nearly every food or every smell. Ginger, teas, cookies, even the spice can be helpful in preventing nausea. Try to avoid fatty foods, which take longer to digest, particularly during pregnancy, when your stomach takes longer to empty. Try taking your prenatal vitamins later in the day or discuss possible alternatives, such as children’s chewables.

Morning Sickness Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Eat frequent small meals, every 2 or 3 hours, rather than 3 large meals daily.

2. Get up slowly and do not lie down immediately after eating.

3. Eat dry crackers 15 minutes before getting up in the morning.

4. Eat more fruits and complex carbohydrates such as potatoes, crackers and pasta. Sensitive stomachs find those foods easier to tolerate.

5. Eat high protein foods as they help fight nausea.

6. Do not skip meals, allowing your stomach to become “empty”.

7. Drink fluids hour before a meal or hour after a meal. Do not drink during your meal.

8. Try eating cold food instead of hot (cold food does not smell as much).

9. Try bland foods, as opposed to spicy foods.

10. Try to avoid fatty foods, which take longer to digest, particularly during pregnancy, when your stomach takes longer to empty.

11. Try taking your prenatal vitamins later in the day or discuss possible alternatives, such as children’s chewables.

12. Try not to get overheated as it seems to agitate morning sickness.

Morning sickness is an unwanted side effect of pregnancy for many women. In fact, 50% of women who give birth experience morning sickness. Learn what steps can be taken to prevent or eliminate, morning sickness

And if that isn’t bad enough, morning sickness usually is more than just “morning sickness”… it can last all day. Also, a pregnant woman must be very careful about what medication she takes, because many can be harmful to a growing fetus. So, because of the pain of morning sickness, and the lack of safe chemical medications, natural remedies for morning sickness are frequently taken. Here are a few steps and home remedies that are proven to work for morning sickness:

Step 1: Don’t let your stomach become empty. An empty stomach is thought to be the source behind many episodes of nausea during pregnancy. To keep a stomach with food in it, you need to do 2 things… First, eat 6 small meals a day, rather than 1 big meal. Second, keep a bland, salty food by the bed such as crackers, and eat a serving whenever you wake up. Do this whether it is the middle of the night, or first thing in the morning. Keeping food in the stomach can help some women reduce the nausea, and it is an extremely safe method of doing so.

Step 2: Avoid fatty and fried foods. These can be hard on the stomach, and aren’t healthy to eat anyway.

Step 3: It is important to drink lots of fluids, particularly water. Avoid soda, carbonated drinks, and caffeine.

Step 4: If the nausea or vomiting start to occur, a peppermint oil home made inhaler can suppress it. Simply drop 1 – 3 drops of the essential oil peppermint on a napkin, hold the napkin near the mouth and nose and breath in. Peppermint has a soothing effect, and will reduce the symptoms of nausea. This remedy is extremely effective, and was written up in “The Journal of Advanced Nursing” back in September, 1997.

Step 5: Take a vitamin B6 Supplement. This been common knowledge for a while, but only recently has been used to stop morning sickness. In the 1940′s, two studies were conducted on a total of over 350 women and concluded the same thing: taking 25 mg – Taking 60mg of vitamin B6 has been studied and proven to help some women prevent morning sickness. Ideally, you should take it 3 times per day, in a 10 mg dosage per time – 20 mg capsules at a time. Once first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, once mid day, and once in the evening. Never take more than 100 mg a day, because nerve problems are possible with more than 100 mg a day.

Although not all of these remedies will be effective for everyone, each one has been studied and the results show some level of effectiveness for many women. Always consult a doctor before doing anything while pregnant, since pregnancy is a very sensitive medical condition, and there are many ways to accidentally affect your babies growth and development. These treatments, albeit natural and organic, should still be taken only under the supervision of a medical professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What foods should I stay away from to prevent morning sickness?
Im lucky enough to not only have morning sickness but all day sickness, so whats some foods I should stay away from to prevent or to help with it even a little?

    • ANSWER:
Im so sorry!! Im 16 weeks and I still have … what I like to call “pregnancy sickness.” Different foods seem to affect different people. Obvious ones are heavy/greasy/really spicy foods. What I did to figure out what seems to make the nausea/vomitting worse is keep a “diary” of what I was eating. By doing that I noticed what foods seemed to give me the most trouble: red meats are a big one for me, and I avoid them now. Also, I started taking my prenatal vitamin at night when the nausea was the most mild. Try eating smaller more frequent meals, that seems to help me … nibble crakers, sip water/juice, little bit of soup etc.

GOOD LUCK, I know this part sucks, but its worth it huh?? :o )

  2. QUESTION:
How can you prevent morning sickness?
I’m thinking about getting pregnant again but I dread 3 months of morning sickness. How can I prevent it?

    • ANSWER:
I just got through reading about how to lessen your symtpoms. It said to:
      Not eat fatty foods,
      drink lots of fluids,
eat several small meals a day,
      take lots of naps,
      and to take prenatal vitamins.

  3. QUESTION:
What are ways to prevent morning sickness when pregnant?
What are some ways ladies that you have prevented or helped illeviate morning sickness and nausea when you were pregnant. Were there things you ate, or things you did to control it? I heard that eating very little before bed and crackers helps. Is this true?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I had such bad nausea while pregnant that I actually lost 15 lbs! My doctor told me to take, as crazy as it sounds, Unisom and B-6 vit. She said take it at night and it helps calm the nausea the next day, and she assured me it was completely safe for my unborn child. This was the only thing that help curb my nausea. Of course you should ask your Doctor first, but I hope this helps!

  4. QUESTION:
How to prevent Morning sickness early on?
I found out I’m pregnant, how can i prevent morning sickness early on, im not afraid of nausea just the vomiting, i have a phobia of vomiting so i need any advice i can get

    • ANSWER:
      Vitamin B6 supplements help

  5. QUESTION:
What are some foods I can eat to help prevent morning sickness?
It feels like to have to eat all day long or the nausea gets worse.

Some mild/plain food suggestions would be great.

    (6 weeks pregnant)

    • ANSWER:
Honey I was sick from week 6 to week 25 and then still nauseated until I delivered. From week 6 to week 14 or so, absolutely nothing helped. I remember being so thirsty, but nothing would quench my thirst because it made me sick to drink or eat. After week 14, I ate sunflower seeds all day. I would suck on them, eat the seed and then spit out the shell. Keeping busy with those, helped me some. I also lived off of Taco Bell bean burritos with no onions or sauce. I wanted nachos with jalapenos so bad, but I tried them and yep, you know the rest. Greasy food was definitely bad on me. When I asked this question, I heard everything from “preggy pops” to ginger and carbs. Then it was more protein, less protein, crackers, etc. I just wanted to throw up my kid in the toilet sometimes because I was THAT miserable!! LOL! Unfortunately everyone is different and you will have to try it all before you find your own. Best wishes to you and your little one. I’m planning on trying for a second soon, so I’m sure I’ll be right here and you can remind me about this conversation. Take care!!

  6. QUESTION:
    How to prevent morning sickness?
im having really bad morning sickness. what can i do to help it? im eating every night before i go to sleep but because i have to wake up at 7.30 monday-friday i wake up wait 5minuets and then i eat but what ever i eat i am sicking it back up. Also when i am sick in the morning i find it hard to eat all through the day! Also will me being stressed affect my baby?

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. You really don’t want to be dehydrated, so drink as much as possible. Take small sips so as not to overwhelm your stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if you can manage it.

Other things that might work for you are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

You should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when you can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. You will feel worse if your stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

If nothing else works, talk to your doctor and see if you can get antinausea medication like reglan or zofran.

      Good luck!

  7. QUESTION:
Wha is the best low calorie food to be eaten to prevent morning sickness without dieting?
Or else I will be too large if i dont dev some routine.

    • ANSWER:
I have heard you can chew ginger to ward off nausea. I personally have never tried it.
      GL :)

  8. QUESTION:
Is There Anything You Can Do To Prevent Morning Sickness??
I was just wondering if there is anything you can do to prevent morning sickness im kinda of afraid of vomiting i know thats kinda weird but hey its the truth if you can help me please do so thank you in advance

    God Bless!

    • ANSWER:
There is not surefire way to prevent it, but if you bear the burden of having morning/all day sickness, there are a few methods to make it a little easier on you. Eating crackers, bread, and other bland foods tends to help. So does drinking Sprite or Ginger Ale (or eating or drinking anything ginger for that matter). I also used SeaBands during my first trimester which worked wonders!! Hope that helps.

  9. QUESTION:
what can i do to prevent morning sickness?
this is my second baby and i’m six weeks pregnant.
when i was pregnant with my first child i spitted a lot and got sick a lot, so this time i want to be prepared.
    please help

    • ANSWER:
In my case, I tried every trick: eating small meal, eating saltines before getting up in the morning, gynger, ginger ale. Nothing helped, I had the worst case of vomiting. My doctor prescribed me zofran, and I took that for about 6 weeks. That is the olny thing that helped.

  10. QUESTION:
What can I eat during pregnancy to help prevent morning sickness?
I have the longest list of what I can’t eat. I would like specific answers please… not just “fruits and vegetables” or “something from all food groups.” I cannot see the doctor to ask for two more weeks and I am VERY hungry. It seems as if I puke up everything I eat except for toast. Please help! Also, what can I drink? And what’s the safest thing to sweeten my tea – natural maple syrup or honey? Thank you all so much if you answer!!!

    • ANSWER:
I had severe nausea with all my pregnancies. Here are a few tips:

*Cold drinks, for some reason, tend to make you nauseaus. Try drinking your drinks at room temperature.

*Gatorade is good, not only does it seem to curb nausea but it replenishes important fluids and electrolytes you lose from throwing up.

*Lemons have something in them that wards off nausea. Try lemon drops, lemonheads, or some kind of lemon hard candy. The sugar also helps keep your blood sugar at a consistant level which also helps with nausea, weakness, tiredness, etc.

*Try to keep something light on your stomach. Empty stomachs trigger nausea. Applesauce, yougurt, a small piece of cheese.

*Gingerale is really good. They have flavored gingerale, such as raspberry and dry grape if you don’t like plain gingerale.

Nausea is your bodys way of adjusting to hormones. Alot of women find that they have an aversion to meats or whatnot. It’s your bodies way of telling you what it needs.

If you eat toast, put a small amount of jelly or honey on it. The small amount of sugar really goes a long way, and it will help out ALOT!!

Spearmint gum is good too, for when you are on the go.

    • ANSWER:

don’t stay on empty stomach, eat fruits and veg with high level of water,
      dry crackers in the morning.

      sue.

  13. QUESTION:
are there any pills or something to take to prevent morning sickness when pregnant?
its uncomfortable to teach kids with parents watching while i teach ballet and not knowing whether i will be sick or not.
is there anything i could take to prevent it??

    • ANSWER:
If your morning sickness is severe enough, your doctor may prescribe medication that will offer you morning sickness relief. If you have morning sickness where you are unable to keep food or water down for any length of time, PLEASE talk to your doctor to see what can be done. Extensive weight loss / dehydration can be harmful to both mom and baby. Your doctor will be able to evaluate your situation and health profile and decide which medication will be most helpful in giving you morning sickness relief. The medications prescribed are administered in three different ways depending on the severity of the morning sickness and the medication: orally, intravenously, and in suppository format.

Below you will find ideas which you can try:

      # Try taking your prenatal vitamins later in the day.

      # Vitamin B6 – 50 mg. daily. Vitamin B6 has been shown to help with pregnancy induced nausea. There are also products available now which contain therapeutic doses of Vitamin B6. One is B-Natal TheraPops are cherry flavored lollipops which have been shown to reduce pregnancy morning sickness. Another Vitamin B-6 enriched product is called Morning Sickness Magic. Morning Sickness Magic is a herbal remedy containing Ginger, Vitamin B-6, Red Raspberry Leaf and Folic Acid.

      # Ginger in capsules form 250 mg. three times daily can be beneficial. Ginger has long been associated with alleviating nausea. You can also get the benefit of using ginger by chewing on crystallized ginger or sucking on ginger hard candies.

      # Avoid warm places as heat can increase the nausea feelings.

      # Take naps during the day (but not right after eating). Tiredness plays a big part in morning sickness.

      # Get enough sleep at night.

      # Get out of bed slowly in the morning.

      # Try eating plain crackers or dry cereal before you get out of bed in the morning.

      # Open windows or turn on exhaust fans when cooking and after meals.

      # Cooking in the microwave usually produces less odors.

      # Silly as it sounds, carry a handkerchief with a few drops of a non nausea causing essential oil (lemon for example) in it and breath through it if you can’t get away from the smell that is bothering you.

      # Avoid greasy or spicy foods as they often cause nausea or heartburn.

      # Eat what you want when you want it. Your cravings will not lead you the wrong way.

      # Have frequent protein snacks. (Low fat meats and seafood, nuts, eggs and beans are high protein.)

      # Eat smaller meals every two hours or so.

      # Eating something salty before a meal can help you “make it through” a meal.

      # Do not drink fluids with your meals.

      # Non caffeinated teas like peppermint and ginger can help came nausea.

      # Drink small amounts of fluids regularly though out the day to avoid dehydration.

      # Do not skip meals if you can help it.

      # Avoid spicy and fried food – both eating and smelling it can increase your nausea.

      # Cold food may have less nausea inducing smells associated with them.

is there anything you can take to get rid of or prevent morning sickness?

i got some ginger chews at the health food store and they work for me quite well. I’ve also noticed taking warm baths can help it go away for a bit. Saltines are great but goldfish crackers help me more. ginger ale is good but better with the fizz stirred out. sometimes its too sweet for me though and makes it worse. Also, very carefully read your body. if it smells weird, dont eat it. if it tastes weird, dont eat it. if it looks weird, dont eat it. trust your senses. I also noticed taking my prenatals right before i went to bed was better then any other time of the day on my morning sickness.

First, not everyone gets morning sickness. I had it all at all hours of the day & night until 20 weeks. It was horrible. There is no way to completely avoid it, but you can lessen the symptoms. It helped to eat only blan foods & never get hungry, always have something in your stomach, crackers, whatever. I ate right before bed & set my alarm for 3 am to eat a plain bagel to avoid running to the toilet at 6am. Also ppl say to eat Ginger, didn’t help me at all.

Best remedy is time. It will go away.

I had horrible all day sickness with my first son. Try putting some crackers on your night stand and when you wake up eat a couple before you even get out of bed. Wait about a minute and then get up. Also try eating very bland meals and only a little at a time. Example: Toast without butter, mashed potatoes with out butter or pepper, etc. Also try drinking some sprite. Again only eat and drink a little at a time. Take a bite or two then wait and eat a little more. If you throw up wait at least an hour before you try to eat again. Original flavor goldfish crackers. Cereal high in fiber (eat it dry as a snack or with milk) At least two full glasses of milk everyday. Yogurt!!! fresh fruit, especially bannanas and strawberries. some things to stay away from: Greasy foods (french fries & burgers) bacon, too much chocolate (will give you headaches), anything really salty or extrememly suggary. Make sure you keep food in your stomach at all times. you will probably need to nibble at night as well to prevent feeling yucky first thing in the AM.

Nothing works 100% but I will tell you some of the things that eased it a little: Menthol sweets-got rid of that horrible taste in my mouth and ending up eating loads of them; Eating little and often-when I was at work, I kept small choc biscuits dotted around and had a little nibble when I felt the nausea coming on; travel wristbands(Sea bands)-not really sure that they work that well but I was that desparate that I would try anything; crystallised ginger-I hated the taste but it is supposedly the best thing for sickness; ginger biscuits (same reason but nicer to eat); Satisfy cravings-I had a thing for salmon paste sandwiches (yuk) and used to make up a big batch in the morning so that I could just grab one when I felt like it. As I said, nothing worked 100% but all made it more manageable. I used to feel that if I kept busy, it took my mind off of it so get her out and about, have day trips to places you wouldn’t normally go. Paint the nursery and go baby shopping, it makes it all seem worthwhile. Good luck-my heart goes out to her.

  25. QUESTION:
Prevent vomiting due to morning sickness?
I am six weeks pregnant and starting to feel a little queasy in the mornings and evenings.. This is a big problem for me, because I have a very severe phobia of vomiting. I haven’t really felt like throwing up yet, just felt a little nauseated. But I’m afraid it’s going to get worse.

What are some good ways to keep from vomiting if I do feel sick? How can I prevent the nausea?

      Good luck!

  27. QUESTION:
any other herbs/suppliments for morning sickness?
Are there any other herbs/suppliments to help ease/prevent morning sickness besides ginger or peppermint?

Would taking such measures BEFORE getting pregnant or showing signs of morning sickness help prevent actually getting it?
Rashada A, congratulations, you get most pointless reply of the day ward.

Seriously, if I was going to google it I wouldn’t have come on here.

    • ANSWER:
omg, oldtimekid’s answer is really infuriating.

Please do not follow his recommendations. Aloe Vera should NEVER be used internally during pregnancy due to its emmenagogue/uterine stimulant properties, which can promote uterine bleeding and possibly cause a miscarriage. Licorice is also not recommended during pregnancy, nor are essential oils of any kind for internal use. Peppermint essential oil in particular should be avoided as it can stimulate miscarriage. Shame on you oldtimekid! This, like many of your other answers to questions in this category is not only inaccurate but truly deplorable!

There are many factors that contribute to morning sickness: sudden hormonal changes, in particular a rapid increase in the hormone chorionic gonadotrophin (CG); shifting dietary needs; insufficient amounts of B vitamins.

Taking ginger tea will only help to alleviate the nausea of morning sickness, rather than addressing the underlying causes. Since both the liver and endocrine glands are involved in hormone production and regulation, I would recommend a combination of Dandelion root, Wild Yam and Chaste Tree berry…all of which are safe during pregnancy.

As these are tonic herbs, you may not notice the effects right away, but if you sip the tea at regular intervals throughout the day, you will eventually begin to feel the results. Taking these (or other liver and endocrine tonic herbs) before conception will definitely be of benefit to help normalize your hormones thereby helping to treat one of the underlying causes of morning sickness.

  28. QUESTION:
how do I prevent or stop morning sickness? Please please help.?
I have been pregnant once before and the morning sickness was debilitating, i lost my job because i was throwing up in the mornings and afternoon and couldn’t work i also lost too much weight because i couldn’t handle eating and then throwing up which cause a miscarriage, I can’t lose this job as i plan to keep the baby and need to support myself, how can i cure the sickness i get with pregnancy? The medication my doctor gave me last time, didn’t help at all.

    • ANSWER:
Since all pregnancies are different, just hope this one won’t be as bad! I used sea-bands (available at drug stores), ginger ale, peppermints, and saltine crackers….also i have heard of women using marijuana. A lot of people are against this and I’ll probably catch a lot of crap, but if it’s something you’re not against, it’s worth researching (credible sites).

Marijuana is not mixed with tobacco (it’s a totally separate plant). Please understand that I am not advising anyone to smoke marijuana while they are pregnant! I am actually not advising you to do anything, I’m just sharing my experience and what I have heard from others. Please follow your own common sense and your doctor’s advice.

  29. QUESTION:
    Best thing for morning sickness?
I just found out i am pregnant with our second child, YAY. I have been experiencing morning sickness and for some reason i can’t remember what i used to do to help prevent it the first time i was pregnant. So i need some advice on how to prevent morning sickness. What is your secret remedy?
Bananas, Check. I had one this morning a felt better after eating it. I hate ginger but with give ANYTHING a go, LOL.

    • ANSWER:
Congrats! Congrats! CONGRATSSS Keshizlle!! *Doing a little jig!* LMAO!
I’m so excited that you have a mini little Isabella growing inside you, boy or girl they will be perfect and adorable!
Okay got off track, sorry :)
The only thing that worked for me during my pregnancy were tums (safe during pregnancy), baby tylenol, saltine crackers and I practically lived off of sprite… the carbonation in the soda helped me burp (TMI I know) and I found that really relieved me! :)
Be careful with the bananas, only because they can cause constipation during pregnancy if eaten too much. I learned that the hard way and you don’t want to be double uncomfortable if you know what I mean.
Wow I’m just full of TMI advice tonight!

  30. QUESTION:
How to prevent the “morning sickness” that lasts all day?
I recently found out that we’re expecting number 5! We’re so excited, and can’t wait for our new bundle of joy to arrive mid- November! I have been having terrible morning sickness (from sun up to sun down) for a short while now, but it’s been ten times worse then with my other 3 pregnancies (including a set of twins). I’ve been craving pickles like crazy, I’ll eat almost 2 jars in one day… does that have something to do with it? Do you moms or mommy to be’s have any advice on how to get rid of, or ease the sickness?

    • ANSWER:
The first time I was pregnant I had my good and bad days. When it was a bad day I might as well have lived in the bathroom. My husband came home with “Preggy pops” you can get them online at walgreens.com. They are just lollipops. Also ask your OB for Bendectin. It works so good. Drink water and eat small meals and take it easy. Good luck!

  31. QUESTION:
What are some ways to prevent extreme “morning sickness”….. For me its like all day sickness?
I would like to elaborate because I asked a question earlier and a rude person tried to insult me due to her not reading the question carefully. With two missed periods and three positive tests I am sure i am pregnant but my question was when will I feel pregnant meaning when will I be able to SEE the changes in my body because right now I FEEL them A LOT. I notice that I sleep more and I feel sick 75% of the day but hen will I begin to show thanks you for all the other comments but to answer your questions no I am not that lucky I have morning sickness like crazy

    • ANSWER:
I had crazy all day sickness too. What works for me is eating. sounds impossible, I know. Try to have a few bites of something every half hour. some toast, cold fruit, and dry cereal worked for me. the key is not having an empty stomach. and never drink anything before eating, or brushing your teeth, lol. Keep some snacks near you bed and munch on them before going to sleep and during the night if you wake up. True, I feel like all I do is eat, but for example last night I didn’t eat anything before I went to bed and 6AM I woke up throwing up. It really worked for me and I hope it helps you.

  32. QUESTION:
How do you decrease morning sickness?
I am to a point in my pregnancy where I cannot eat anything. Everything I try to eat comes straight up. I would like to enjoy my Easter dinner without any sort of morning sickness. How can I prevent myself from getting sick?

You might also want to try adding peanut butter to your crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make you feel better if you can keep it down.

If nothing else works, ask your doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help. If you’re really feeling horrible and can’t keep anything down, your doctor may be willing to see you earlier.

      Good luck!

  33. QUESTION:
    Morning Sickness, please help?
Im 17 and prgnt, What is a way to help stop or prevent morning sickness???

    • ANSWER:
You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some
food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full. Here are some other dietary suggestions for preventing or relieving nausea:

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Avoid foods and smells that trigger nausea.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

Acupuncture has been one of the best techniques to cure morning sickness.

Generally morning sickness is not dangerous. But if you get dehydrated,it may affect your baby.

      Hope it helps

  35. QUESTION:
    Morning sickness and eating?
I’m 6 weeks pregnant, and I’ve read a lot of things that say to eat first thing in the morning to prevent morning sickness, eat often, etc, but I’ve found that as long as I don’t eat I’m fine.

For example, this morning I woke up at 6 & didn’t eat until 9 (cereal with milk) & had no sickness. Then I ate a cracker at 1 because I felt like I should be eating something & I’ve been sick since! And the other day for two days in a row, I ate a small breakfast around 8 & didn’t eat again until 6 pm & I had no sickness on those days. But on days when I eat breakfast, snacks, lunch, etc I am sick almost all day!

Any suggestions on what I can do with this terrible morning sickness?

I have classes from 8 am until 8:30 pm (with breaks) some days so I have to make myself eat breakfast & lunch & I can’t concentrate in class because I’m so nauseated!

& I was overweight before I got pregnant so it’s not like I’m starving myself! I usually love food.

    • ANSWER:
My first suggestion would be to eat, eat, eat.. Whether it makes you sick or not, your baby and YOU need the nurishment and to go for so long without any nutrition is bad for your baby and you. I noticed with my last pregnancy that grazing through the day helped me a ton. Not big amounts of food, but a small breakfast, a small snack, a small lunch, a small snack, another snack, dinner, and then maybe 1 -2 snacks after dinner. Also drink lots of water, and feel free to try to take some antacids that may help neutralize some of your angry stomach acid. If it gets too bad, you can see your doctor and they can prescribe you an anti-nausea medication that is safe for pregnancy.

  36. QUESTION:
What does morning sickness feel like?
I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am TERRIFIED of morning sickness. It is a deathly phobia of mine.. to vomit. But I need to overcome this phobia. I’ve tried hypnosis etc and nothing works. I go to bed with slices of lemon, toothpaste, chewing, saltine crackers, lemon water, ginger snaps, sprite zero and ginger ale by my bedside.

How do I prevent morning sickness? Could anybody help me? I know I need to grow up for the baby’s sake but I’m very scared of being sick… Also when does it kick in? Because I haven’t felt anything yet. Just have been excreting constantly

    • ANSWER:
Calm down. Many women never have morning sickness. :-)

Mine started around 5-6 weeks. If yours gets bad, you can always ask your doctor for medication- that’s what I had to do, because nothing else worked. Otherwise, I was throwing up every half an hour.

  37. QUESTION:
Morning Sickness…More like All Day SICKNESS!?
    Alright….

I have been sick all day everyday since I’ve been pregnant. I really don’t know any good remedies for preventing morning sickness or at least subsiding the feeling of nausea. I NEED HELP! lol

So If anyone knows anything about helping me out with this ALL DAY SICKNESS. Could you please post some remedies that I could try and see if they work. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! LOL

    • ANSWER:
I am currently 23 wks along in my third pregnancy. All three pregnancies have made me miserable. I am sick the whole time. There are several things I’ve tried that help. First, you can try sucking on hard candy, pretty much anything except mint. You can also use Tums or Rolaids…both are completely safe. You can also try a medicine like Zantac…again, completely safe. A lot of the time our nausea is caused by too much stomach acid, so the Tums and Zantac may work. Also, eat something small every two hours. If you keep food in your stomach, the acid won’t bother you as much. Good luck and hang in there…I know exactly how you feel!!!!!

  38. QUESTION:
    Morning Sickness…I’m So Scared..?
This is my 3rd pregnancy, I’m 4-5wks preg, and the nauseous feeling has started already. I haven’t actually vomited, but the constant sickly feeling is so bad, and I’m finding that the only thing to cure it is eating!!!! With my first pregnancy I had sickness from 6-16wks and then again from 35-40wks…but with my second pregnancy, I had sickness from 6-40 weeks non stop, I lost weight, became very ill, and really suffered. To put it bluntly, I’m terrified of getting it that bad again, and my docs refused to give me any anti sickness tablets last time because it was “normal”…yeah right!

Does anyone have any proven tips for preventing morning sickness, or at least making this sickly feeling a bit more tolerable?

maybe because this one [kid] is going to be SO spoiled.![ so spoiled it makes you sick.]

  43. QUESTION:
With morning sickness, is it normal for the vomit to come out of your nose?
I’m 6 months pregnant and been dealing with BAD morning sickness (vomitting, heartburn, etc.) everyday, all day long.

The past few weeks everytime I have to vomit, it doesn’t just come out of my mouth but also my nose and it HURTS bad. Is this normal? How can I prevent it?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, this is normal even though I’m sure it’s not the least bit fun. Ask your doctor for ways to prevent it and maybe take some over-the-counter medicin to help with the horrible morning sickness.

  44. QUESTION:
Is it too soon to be getting morning sickness?
I was scheduled to ovulate around the week of the 26th of March and for the last 3 nights I have felt very nauseated and then today I feel it too. My husband and I arnt trying to get pregnant but we arent doing anything to prevent it and we would be SO EXCITED if we were pregnant. Is it too soon to have morning sickness? and is it too soon to buy a pregnancy test? Thanks for your help!

    • ANSWER:
At ten days past ovulation- if you indeed did conceive during the time you stated this is what has happened: Sperm would have traveled up the fallopian tube and fertilized the egg, then it’s about a three to five day journey to the uterus and another two to five days for implantation. If you are pregnant implantation would have just happened in the last few days; so, yes, it’s a bit too early for any pregnancy symptoms other than possible implantation bleeding (but don’t worry if you don’t have it- I didn’t) and some menstrual-like cramps. Try to wait until the day of or day after your next expected period- early pregnancy tests CAN detect pregnancy four days before but the accuracy rate is much lower than waiting.

  45. QUESTION:
please help my all day morning sickness prevents me from walking, or exercising on treadmill?
I am 9 weeks and 3 days pregnant. From 4 weeks I have had all day nausea and vomitting comes like once every other day. I found the first 3 weeks even during the morning sickness, I was able to walk on treadmill I had the nausea but with a peppermint in mouth, I would get through. Now from 2 weeks my nausea it seems has increased a bit more and now I dont even feel like walking during the day. the walking from work to car or building to building makes me bloated and nauseous. Any suggestions? Is it okay if I continue to suck on mints or jolly ranchers while I walk on treadmill as thats the only way I can exercise? Otherwise I feel i will vomit during my exercise. Also, I have not been able to exercise from over a week now and I already feel like I am gaining weight. I keep eating something every 2 hours so I feel like my tummy can’t always handle it either. Any help guys?
I find it a problem to go to lunch because driving to places at lunch time makes me nauseous as I am hungry for food. Walking in grocery store or shopping for quick things over lunch, I can’t do it without a mint in my mouth. I feel bad.

    • ANSWER:
It’s one of the joys of being pregnant. I’m sorry you have it so bad, It should taper off around 12 weeks but some people have morning sickness the whole way through their pregnancy. Try to find something that you can hold down and just eat that. My doctor told me I could exercise during my pregnancy but not to get my heart rate over 140 or 160, I don’t remember which one.

  46. QUESTION:

I’m 10 weeks and the all-day sickness has apparently been taking a toll on my front teeth. I brush every time I throw up, which gets a little excessive. However, my front teeth are visibly getting clearer and darker(yellow-brown tint) on the bottom and I have several small discolored areas. I obviously can’t make myself stop throwing up, what can I do to prevent further damage? I liked my pretty white teeth!

    • ANSWER:
Brushing immediately after throwing up is good, since it will help get rid of the acid in your mouth that could damage teeth. Also drink plenty of water to wash out any vomit remaining in your mouth, and maybe use some mouthwash as well. As far as keeping them white, you probably just have to bleach them or use some sort of whitening strip.

  47. QUESTION:
What is the best way to deal with morning sickness?
what is the best way to deal with it?!?!?!? i REALLY REALLY hate puking..AND I MEAN REALLY HATE IT!!! is there any way to prevent it??! such as ant-acids?
YES i mean pregancy sickness-and i have had my period for almost 6 YEARS!!

    • ANSWER:
Keep hydrated. Don’t let your stomach get completely empty. Keep snacks nearby (such as crackers, pretzels, veggies, etc.) Eat something small before you get out of bed (I always kept crackers on the nightstand). Sour candies really seemed to help me. So did ginger (either ginger ale or ginger cookies). Just take heart in the fact that it usually gets better around the 12 week mark. If you can’t keep anything down, let your doctor know. They can prescribe something to help you.

  48. QUESTION:
How did you deal with morning sickness?
Did it interfere with your day (prevent you from going places, driving, etc…) or what did you do to force yourself through it? What advice do you have for someone who’s really bad at dealing with nausea?

    • ANSWER:

  49. QUESTION:
When did you start getting morning sickness?
Im 6 weeks and the doctor said if i haven’t had it yet i probably wont. What is some things you can do to prevent it, and do pre-natal vitamins make you sick?

    Thanks eveyone!!

    • ANSWER:
I had 2 experiences, very similar to each other. For me it started 6-8 weeks into the pregnancy and I used crackers or toast to help me through it. I had to eat some right as I woke up to prevent being sick. Then I had to keep it handy throughout the day (it should really be called throughout-the-day sickness). It ended right around the end of the 4th month. It wasn’t horrible, but it still was the most annoying part of the pregnancy. Thank God, vitamins didn’t make me sicker. I think though that I should have taken a bit more Calcium, as all my teeth became weaker.

  50. QUESTION:
    Morning sickness help?
When I was pregnant with my first child I had the worst morning sickness and I was wondering if anyone knows of great ways to help lessen the symptoms of morning sickness? Or to prevent them all together?

    • ANSWER:
You may be able to alleviate nausea by keeping some food in your stomach — by avoiding having a stomach that’s completely empty or completely full.

Eat smaller meals or snacks frequently throughout the day.

Before getting out of bed in the morning, eat a couple of soda crackers or a piece of dry toast. Rise slowly, allowing some time for digestion to occur before you get up.

Have a small snack at bedtime and when you get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Drink fewer fluids with your meals.

      Thanks

‘Morning sickness’ or nausea gravidarum may be used to define the overall feeling of being unwell experienced by women in the initial months of pregnancy. It makes a woman feel dreadfully uncomfortable. It is the cumulative outcome of an enhanced sense of smell, excess stomach acids; turbulence felt in stomach, vertigo and increased fatigue. The patient also feels extremely nauseous and may be subject to bouts of vomiting. Too much of vomiting may lead to complications like dehydration, malnutrition etc.

It cannot prove harmful for the baby unless the expecting mother loses weight severely due to excessive vomiting. Thankfully for the majority, nausea gravidarum tides over by the end of the third month of pregnancy. A woman mostly suffers from nausea gravidarum early in the morning; but symptoms may be present at day time even. The causes or triggering factors of nausea gravidarum may be listed as follows:

1. Rapid increase in estrogen levels
2. Hormonal fluctuations
3. Rapid rise and fall in blood glucose levels
4. Strong odor
5. Vitamin B deficiency
6. Sensitive gastrointestinal tract
7. Stress
8. Certain food items
9. Traveling
10. Fatigue.

Home Remedies

1. Taking 3-4 cups of ginger tea or any ginger supplement daily eases the discomfort caused by morning sickness.

2. Mix 1 teaspoon lime juice and 1 teaspoon mint juice and take the mixture along with 1 tablespoon sugar. This relieves nausea gravidarum.

3. Dissolve 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in glassful cold water and drink before going to bed at night. This is an effective home remedy for morning sickness.

4. Mix wheat germ in to warm milk and take a teaspoon after every 1 hour. This is a useful morning sickness remedy.

5. Extract juice of 20-25 curry leaves. Mix 1 teaspoon honey and 2 teaspoon fresh lime juice in to juice obtained from curry leaves. Take the mixture thrice a day to get cured of morning sickness.

6. Put three drops of lavender oil and one drop of peppermint oil in to a diffuser and spray in your room to make the surrounding air fragrant. This helps to fight morning sickness.

7. Consume the easily digestible unsalted crackers immediately after waking up in the morning. This calms your stomach and alleviates nausea gravidarum.

8. Keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and juices. This keeps the stomach steady and helps to combat nausea gravidarum.

9. Do not overeat because that will unsettle your stomach and exacerbate morning sickness.

10. Feast on frozen fruit bars or any other frozen treat. This helps to beat nausea.

11. Breathe in plenty of fresh air. This cures nausea gravidarum.

12. Take ample rest.

13. Avoid fried, fatty foods.

14. Follow the needs of your stomach and act accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness in pregnancy?
I have had four healthy pregnancies and gave birth at age 18, 19, 20 and 21. I never experienced a day of morning sickness. Now, at age 38, I am wondering if I become pregnant, if will I go through this?

    • ANSWER:
The hormone HCG which is produced when the embryo implants into the uterin wall is what makes you sick. This hormone doubles every 48 hours which for some people is hard on their body (and their stomachs). Just because you had 4 pregnancies with no sickness does not mean you will have a 5th just like it, or vice versa.

  2. QUESTION:
What Causes Morning Sickness In A Male?
I have really bad nausea (morning sickness) on most days i feel like if i ate something i would puke. Is there something wrong?

    • ANSWER:
it may be caused by a minimum amount of blood and oxygen being transported to your brain. if this is not the answer then i suspect it may be caused by the polar diffusion of your atoms and amount of blood.

  3. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness and nausea that ISNT pregnancy?
I am def. not pregnant. I just feel really sick every morning and there is a little pain between my ribs below my breasts. This has been going on about 11 months.

    • ANSWER:
I used to have morning sickness every single day. It was caused by a stomach acid problem that may or may not go away by itself. The pain between the ribs may be muscle soreness on the inside of your rib cage because you’re body’s trying to neutralize an excess of acid.

  4. QUESTION:
What, apart from pregnancy, causes morning sickness?
For the last few days I’ve been waking up about an hour earlier than usual feeling very sick. I’ve not actually been sick yet, and the feeling wears off by mid-morning. I’m not pregnant or anything.

    What could this be?

    • ANSWER:
Anxiety makes you feel sick in the morning and clears up in the middle of the day

  5. QUESTION:
What exactly causes morning sickness in pregnant women?
Is it the surge of hormones?

    Thanks!

  6. QUESTION:
    What causes morning sickness?
What causes pregnant women to have morning sickness? And when are they most likely to have it?

    • ANSWER:
this is funny becuase i was driving and i had a flash back of me being pregnant and how i got nauseated while FOB was driving and I barfed on the side of the freeway and that made me wonder WHY ON EARTH CAUSES MORNING SICKNESS so i googled it today and found out that it can be caused by:

      • Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

Estrogen, another hormone that rises rapidly in early pregnancy, is also considered a prime suspect, and it’s possible that other hormones play a role as well.

      • An enhanced sense of smell and sensitivity to odors. It’s not uncommon for a newly pregnant woman to feel overwhelmed by the smell of a bologna sandwich from four cubicles away, for example, and that certain aromas instantly trigger her gag reflex. This may be a result of higher levels of estrogen.

      • A tricky stomach. Some women’s gastrointestinal tracts are simply more sensitive to the changes of early pregnancy.

  7. QUESTION:
what causes morning sickness at 19 weeks?
everyday i wake up feeling the same way. headache at the back of my neck and i have to be sick. When im sick I dont actually throw up anything, i just gag and gag and gag and the eventually im all better and good to go for the day. What could be causing this and can i take it as a sign that my baby is still doen good in there?

    • ANSWER:

  8. QUESTION:
What are causes of morning sickness besides pregnancy?
I know I”m not pregnant, but these past few days, I haven’t been able to keep food down in the morning. Could the recent death of my grandma be a possible cause?

    • ANSWER:
Could be stress you’re feeling from that tragic event. It could also be due to low blood pressure when you wake up, or even dehydration. Try drinking a small glass of water before you go to bed

Personally, I’ve found that taking a multi-vitamin was making me sick everyday. I can’t take vitamins in the morning, even with food, or I will be seeing it all again in about an hour.

Maybe look at what you’re eating as well. Do you eat late at night before going to bed…that could be contributing. I can’t handle very large meals any time of the day, so in the morning, I’ll get ready for the day first, then have a light yogurt. Then maybe a few hours later, I’ll take a break and have a piece of fruit. This goes on throughout the day. While I don’t eat lots at once, I still get my calories in because I eat 6-7 times during the course of a day.

Not saying that that is your issue, but just suggesting that, until this subsides, you might want to downsize your breakfast or put it off another hour or so if you’re not too hungry.

  9. QUESTION:
What, physiologically speaking, causes morning sickness?
    I’ve always wondered. Why vomiting?

    • ANSWER:
Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

  11. QUESTION:
What causes morning sickness during pregnancy?
    Just curious!

    Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
The truth is doctors don’t yet know but there is a couple of theories. One is that it has something to do with the release of several different hormones once it starts to implant and the placenta begins to grow. During this stage the embryo is mostly surviving on it’s yolk sac and the placenta doesn’t fully take over the job of supplying nutrients until about 12 weeks (which seems very late). This is around the time most women find their sickness goes, give or take a couple of weeks. So current theory has it that is is something to do with the growing placenta or the yolk sac and the release of hcg and relaxin.

The other theory is that it has something to do with the progesterone as the placenta takes over its production at around the time morning sickness goes too.

Interestingly the tiredness you have in early pregnancy turns out to be due to your heart beating up to 15 times more per min until your body has more fluids because blood volume increases by as much as 50% at full term and your body take a while to catch up.

  12. QUESTION:
When you are pregnant, what actually causes the “morning sickness?”?
Like, does the HCG hormone meet up with some other chemical in our bodies that makes it turn into sickness or something? I’ve always wondered. I know it’s ‘because your pregnant’ but I just wanted to know what actually makes the morning sickness happen?

And is there a way to stop it?

    • ANSWER:
No one knows for sure what causes nausea during pregnancy, but it’s probably some combination of the many physical changes taking place in your body. Some possible causes include:
      • Rapidly rising levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG.

A tricky stomach. Some women’s gastrointestinal tracts are simply more sensitive to the changes of early pregnancy.

I personally remember morning sickness feeling like I was on a boat at sea that I couldnt get off. awful. They say eating a small snack before you get out of bed in the morning can help. crackers or something like that. Ginger is quite helpful, ginger tea, ginger ale. ginger candies.. an old fashioned remedy keeping some lemon slices in a bag to sniff when you are feeling queasy. there is a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum .. if you cant hold anything down and feel very ill and dyhydrated, losing weight and such, go to the doctor. I think in those cases they will treat some pregnant women with some medication. in general do not take over the counter remedys. good luck to you.

  13. QUESTION:
    what causes morning sickness?
what causes morning sickness? i’m a very curious person if u know please help me out i am 1 month pregnant and i hate morning sickness…………..

    • ANSWER:
      The answer:
An increase in the circulating level of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen levels may increase by up to a hundredfold during pregnancy. However, there is no consistent evidence of differences in estrogen levels between women who experience sickness and those who don’t.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) due to the placenta draining energy from the mother, though studies have not confirmed this.
An increase in progesterone relaxes the muscles in the uterus, which prevents early childbirth, but may also relax the stomach and intestines, leading to excess stomach acids and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
An increase in human chorionic gonadotropin.
An increase in sensitivity to odors, which overstimulates normal nausea triggers.

    Morning sickness (causes) besides pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
I tend to get nauseous every morning; I suspect my blood sugar drops during the night. You might try eating just as soon as you wake up to see if that settles your stomach. It also happens when I’m stressed out or if I don’t get enough sleep the night before.

  18. QUESTION:
What causes a women to get morning sickness during pregnancy?
And how come some women get this and others don’t? Like, does it have to do with how much stress your under during or how little rest you get?

    • ANSWER:
Its actually the fact that your body is trying to defend itself against a foreign body.

The baby at its early stages feeds off the mother like a parasite. After about 3 months the woman’s body accepts the baby as part of the mother and usually the morning sickness stops.

  21. QUESTION:
Why do we get morning sickness?
Every pregnant women, well most, know the joys of pregnancy, and not so joyful parts of pregnancy. What is supposed to be a very wonderful and joyful experience, can be the worst experience, when your hugging the toilet or walking around feeling quite iffy. So that brings me to my question. Why morning sickness? Why throwing up, the one thing everyone hates to do. Spending hours to cook a meal to only see it again.

Does anyone know what causes morning sickness, there has to be a reasoning behind it.

    • ANSWER:
No one knows for sure what causes nausea during pregnancy, but it’s probably some combination of the many physical changes taking place in your body. Some possible causes include:

HcG rises rapidly during early pregnancy. No one knows how hCG contributes to nausea, but it’s a prime suspect because the timing is right: Nausea tends to peak around the same time as levels of hCG. What’s more, conditions in which women have higher levels of hCG, such as carrying multiples, are associated with higher rates of nausea and vomiting.
Estrogen: This hormone, which also rises rapidly in early pregnancy, is another suspect. (It’s possible that other hormones play a role as well.)
An enhanced sense of smell and sensitivity to odours. It’s not uncommon for a newly pregnant woman to feel overwhelmed by the smell of coffee, for example. Certain aromas instantly trigger the gag reflex. (Some researchers think this may be a result of higher levels of estrogen, but no one knows for sure

      :)

  22. QUESTION:
What causes mean morning sickness and Nausea?

    • ANSWER:
I’m not sure, iv heard that it might be to do with blood sugar levels, but i don’t think they know 100%.
Some people say it depends on the level of hcg you have in your system, but my friend who had Twins, didn’t have 1 single day of nausea or sickness, so i doubt it’s anything to do with that,

In both my previous pregnancies i had the worst sickness, i would be sick after EVERY meal and EVERY time i brushed my teeth or had a bath, i had to carry a bag with my at all times, and i had a bin in my room so that i could throw up during the night i had this from about week 5-34 so most of my pregnancy.

Im only 4 weeks and not yet been sick although i have had a little nausea, but im expecting it to creep up on me very soon.

      Good luck x

  23. QUESTION:
My girlfriend is 9 weeks pregnant and has morning sickness all day, what causes it? ?
Is there anything she can do to stop this? how long will it last? she is sick at any moment of the day and has to stay off work, please help.

    • ANSWER:
The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated. She really doesn’t want to be dehydrated, so she should drink as much as possible. She should take small sips so as not to overwhelm her stomach. Water can sometimes hurt an empty stomach, so she should try ginger ale with the bubbles stirred out (carbonation can also hurt your stomach), powerade or gatorade, or juice, if she can manage it.

Other things that might work for her are popsicles or ices, and fruit–a lot of miserably pregnant women find that they CAN eat fruit, so she should try out different kinds if that appeals at all. For me, I found that I could eat (at different times) strawberries, grapefruit, and thinly sliced golden delicious apples. It was weirdly specific, but it kept me alive!

She should try having very small “meals”–a bite of a cracker here and there when she can stomach it. A lot of people find that keeping crackers or something light next to their bed and taking a few bites before they even get out of bed in the morning. She will feel worse if her stomach is empty, so keeping food in it–even just a little bit–will help stave off the misery.

She might also want to try adding peanut butter to her crackers. Peanut butter has protein, which will make her feel better if she can keep it down.

If nothing else works, she should ask her doctor for medication like reglan or zofran to help

      Good luck!

  24. QUESTION:
    What causes bad morning/all-day sickness?
After trying for over two years, we finally got the BFP on March 5! Exciting! I’ve noticed, though, that the morning sickness hit me harder and sooner than it did with my first pregnancy. With my daughter, I didn’t experience morning sickness until near the end of the third month, and it only went for about a month, and always in the morning. With this one, a week after I got the BFP I started feeling queasy in the evenings, and it’s since gone into full-blown all-day sickness. I eat because I have to, not because I want to, and I have yet to find something that really perks my interest. I realize that every pregnancy is different, but I was wondering if there’s any particular reason that causes worse morning sickness for different pregnancies?

Maybe it’s just me. My mom had two girls, and was in and out of the hospital because she was so sick. My aunt had two boys, and only felt like throwing up once. I’ve had people tell me that because I’m more sick than last time, it’ll be a boy. I’ve also had people say twins, and a few said triplets. Is there any correlation between multiples and morning sickness? Or gender and morning sickness?
I’ve had to stop taking both B and B12 because I just couldn’t keep them down. I’ll ask my OB about B6 though.

    • ANSWER:
      Congrats!

I had the all-day sickness for most of my first pregnancy (first of four). I have two boys and two girls, and my first pregnancy was the only one I was really really sick for. I can’t tell you what causes the morning sickness – but make sure you have plenty of soda crackers around. It may help to have them on your nightstand to have a little nibble before you even get out of bed in the morning.

Also make sure you stay hydrated.

If the vomiting becomes severe, you may have something called “hyperemesis”. Make sure you talk to your doctor about it because that may require medication and possibly even IV fluids.

Of course, that new baby in your arms will be worth it all! Congrats again :-)

  25. QUESTION:
Is morning sickness random or does it happen everyday?
And i have another question… Does something cause morning sickness like people who take jogs or anything or does it just happen under will. Like every time you run you puke because you might be prego or something like that. Or does it just happen every morning.

Explaining my First question: Does morning sickness come like every morning when ever or is it just set to every morning?
So far thanks for all the wonderful answers :) but does The sickness still happen every day when going threw it or just does it come go when ever?

    • ANSWER:
The name can be misleading. I used to get sick in the evenings. It does not have a set time and does not happen like clockwork. I felt great in the mornings. When I would get too dehydrated from working out, which happened easily during my preg, I got sick.

does morning sickness caused you to burp a lot?
I think i am pregnant, i’m going to take home pregnancy test on the day after tomorrow. But i am just curious about this. i burped a lot, like there is wind going round and round in my stomach. there is a little feeling like i wanna throw up, but i didnt, i instead burp a lot. so is this indigestion or morning sickness? thanks. and please answer if you got some time =)

    • ANSWER:
I had that in my early weeks of pregnancy.. I thought it was just me. I never asked anyone about it cause I didn’t know if they would really understand what it is like unless they have had it. There were times it got so bad I grabbed a bowl and started like puking motions but all that came out was air. It was really uncomfortable and annoying. Im almost 12 weeks preggo now and it has seemed to stop but at the time I didnt know if I felt nauseas from the baby or from all the gas in my tummy.
I guess it is just from the slowing of your digestive tract which cause more build up of gas. Cause the pregnancy horomones really slow things down.

Can taking Maxalon for severe morning sickness cause defects?
Please help im really really sick…. starting to loose weight…. like 5 kgs in the last 2 weeks from being constantly sick and not able to keep anything down….. Should I just brave it and force myself to eat or take it? Anyone with Hypermesis Gravidarium? Any advice?
I am doing my best but I cant even sit here at my desk im dry wreching….. I cant even breathe in properly… its so evil

    • ANSWER:
i was exactly the same, don’t just brave it, but see your doctor asap and insist he checks your urine sample. By the time i went to the doc’s ( a week of continuing sickness) i was dehydrated, my urine was dark orange and had to be admitted in hospital immediately. i was given fluid and anti-sickness injections which worked enough for me to start taking anti-sickness tablets. I don’t think you can take maxalon, they prescribed me Avomine. but please see your doctor asap before taking anything at all.

I used to have a similar problem, I’d be sick to my stomach every day in the morning. I didn’t usually throw up, but the nausea was terrible.

Turned out I was lactose intolerant. I had a big bowl of cereal with milk every morning and it was making me sick. I switched to soy milk in my cereal and the ‘morning sickness’ went away.

If the hcg level keeps going up, and up, and up throughout the entire pregnancy – how come morning sickness is worst in the first trimester?
It doesn’t make sense to me, if hormones cause morning sickness, then morning sickness should get worse as the pregnancy progresses.

  40. QUESTION:
What else can cause Morning Sickness besides Pregnancy?
Lately I have been vomiting and nueaseated at the same time every night for weeks now, I can never keep my last meal of the day down. I do take Ortho Tri-cyclen Lo at 9:30pm and I puke around 12 to 1am. I was taking Prozac but stopped a month ago because it made me nauseated too. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. What else could cause this?

    • ANSWER:
It could very well be a food sensitivity. Try cutting out the major food allergens for about a week or so and add them back slowly one at a time to see if anything triggers it. You may also be experiencing some kind of reflux. Try sleeping with your head and shoulders elevated so you’re half sitting. It could also be a reaction to your medications. Take them at another time of day and make sure you’re not mixing them with anything. I used to get violently ill when I took Tylenol before bed because it was mixing with Lamictal. No one knew at that point that they had an adverse interaction.

  41. QUESTION:
are there any birth control pills that don’t cause morning sickness?
i’m thinking of getting back on the pill, i quit b/c i couldn’t afford it but now i can. i remember when i was on it a couple years ago that the first couple months i had really bad morning sickness, it was horrible. i actually left work early one day b/c i couldn’t deal with it. i know it eventually stopped, but isn’t there some pill out there that doesn’t cause you to get morning sickness as bad? or could it be the time of day i took it? i was thinking about yaz, anyone on it?

    • ANSWER:
Progesterone based pills are better for this or low estrogen. The pill is supposed to mimick pregnancy hormones, so that is why you get sick. Talk to your doctor. It is not like back when your mom was getting on the pill, there are so many types now. You should be able to find one.

  42. QUESTION:
when a woman is pregnant… why does she get morning sickness? what causes that?

    • ANSWER:
The rapidly increasing hormones, and some even say the smells. When a woman gets pregnant her sense of smell gets better. I am able to smell things others cannot. I will walk into a friends house, and say that there house smells good like they just got done making pizza. They will tell me they made pizza the other day. It’s so weird!
Like when I walk past certain things/places, and I smell something it will make me feel like I am about to throw up. For the longest time walking into Subway made me sick. The smell of the bread bothered me.

  43. QUESTION:
If no nausea/morning sickness, can I get a positive pregnancy test?
I read that Nausea/Morning Sickness is caused by HCG. What happens if you are pregnant, but you dont have Nausea/Morning Sickness? Will I need a blood test to determine pregnancy?

    • ANSWER:
pregnancy symptoms can vary from each person. I didn’t have any nausea/morning sickness when i was pregnant. Hcg is the pregnancy hormone detected by the urine test. It already means that a sperm and egg united (conception = to me yes you are pregnant). You don’t need a blood test although on your first ob visit (around 7th week)they’ll take a blood test to determine the hcg level because even if you do have hcg in your blood/urine, it doesn’t mean the baby will form (blighted ovum) or you can have a miscarriage and still have hcg in your system. Hcg levels should double everyday. That’s why they take a blood test as a basis.

  44. QUESTION:
What is the scientific cause of morning sickness?
(If you plan on responding with “PREGNANCY”, you’re fired. You’re not cute, not witty, and probably fail a lot of tests for not reading the instructions.) Now then,
Is morning sickness a symptom of a vitamin deficiency? What is the scientific reason for it?

    • ANSWER:
No – morning sickness is the cause of an extreme rise in your hormone levels. Progesterone especially. I didn’t have morning sickness until the doctors discovered my progesterone was low and they put me on pills. WOW. My sickness really kicked in then!

  45. QUESTION:
What is the drug they used to give to pregnant women to stop morning sickness that caused birth defects?
And why does it cause birth defects?
I was gonna put it in the pregancy section, but I didn’t think I’d get the answers I want… But I thought it fit into the “conditions” of diseases and conditions lol.
Okay, why do people never read the details?! And why do they answer when there’s already 10 answers the same?

    • ANSWER:
      Thalidomide

Thalidomide, which is also known as Thalomid, is a drug used to fight aggressive cancers, particularly those that have metastasized, or spread.

      Purpose

There are many studies, either in progress or recently completed, that suggest thalidomide can slow or stop the spread of cancer of the brain, breast, colon, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma (a cancer of the bone marrow). Research studies that consider the benefit of thalidomide in treating other cancers are multiplying rapidly. The use of the drug in cancer therapy is likely to increase.

      Description

Thalidomide was first introduced in 1957 primarily as a tranquilizer, a medication prescribed particularly for imparting drowsiness and sleep. Then, it was given to pregnant women to provide them with relief from morning sickness. Soon after being prescribed to pregnant women, thalidomide was linked to death or severe disabilities in newborns. Some children who had been exposed to thalidomide while in the womb (in utero) failed to develop limbs or had very short limbs. Others were born blind or deaf or with other physical problems.

The same action of thalidomide that harms babies may make it useful as a powerful cancer fighter. Thalidomide interferes with the formation of blood vessels. It is called an antiangiogenic drug because angiogenesis refers to the formation of blood vessels. Studies in 2003 reported that thalidomide may use signal repression or have immunosuppression capabilities. This means it can act on the body’s natural immune responses.

Cancers that spread have a lot of blood vessels (are highly vascularized). Thus, when cancer cells are not nourished by a blood supply, they die. One way to stop the spread of cancer is to stop the formation of the blood vessels that carry nourishment to the cancer cells, and that is what thalidomide is thought to do. Researchers also are interested in other activities of thalidomide, particularly the ones that make it capable of eliminating skin eruptions, such as sores, or ulcers, in the mouths of patients with AIDS and leprosy.

      Recommended Dosage

Dosages being used depend on the type of cancer being attacked. For example, in one study, to treat multiple myeloma, a starting dose of 200 mg per day was increased to 800 mg per day over a two-week period.

In a colon cancer study, 400 mg per day of thalidomide were given in combination with the anticancer drug irinotecan. The dose of irinotecan was between 300 and 350 mg per day. Used in combination with irinotecan, thalidomide contributed its own cancer-fighting properties and it also seemed to reduce the side effects of irinotecan.

In a trial using thalidomide to treat prostate cancer, both low doses (as low as 200 mg per day) and high doses (as high as 1200 mg per day) were tried. The patients taking high doses fared somewhat better.

      Precautions

The serious threat thalidomide poses to fetuses cannot be overstated. No pregnant woman and no woman who has any chance of becoming pregnant should take thalidomide. (Only women who have had a hysterectomy or who are at the age of menopause and have been in a menopausal state, which is no menses, or periods, for 24 consecutive months, can be considered as having no chance of becoming pregnant.)

Patients taking thalidomide must meet strict criteria for use. Pharmacies that dispense thalidomide must have special registration.

      Side Effects

Besides the extreme risk thalidomide poses to fetuses, it also produces side effects in the person taking the drug. The side effects of thalidomide are much milder than many other anticancer drugs, and because the drug poses less discomfort than other cancer-fighting drugs, it is particularly attractive to oncologists, or physicians who treat cancer patients.

Among the side effects are erratic heartbeat, swelling (edema), digestive upsets of all sorts, including both constipation and diarrhea, pain in back and neck muscles, and skin problems.

      Interactions

Barbiturates, salts, and esters used to encourage sleep, and alcohol increase the effect of thalidomide’s power of sedation. They should not be taken with the drug. Food interferes with the absorption of thalidomide; it should be taken when the stomach is empty.

  46. QUESTION:
Which causes more morning sickness being pregnant with a boy or girl?
Does anyone know if there is anything to this? I was just wondering? I have never had morning sickness and been pregnant 6 times. I miscarried every time and now that I am pregnant again I got to thinking. I have been told that it’s possible I can’t carry a boy and that every time I’ve been pregnant before it was a boy ( I never got far enough to actually find out). Now I am only 5 weeks and feel sickly. I just want a healthy baby, but if I can carry a girl and not a boy then I hope this time it’s a girl!

    • ANSWER:
i am really sorry for all that you have been thru…

i have actually also heard this, but i do think that its just a wives tale… i dont think that there is really anything to it… but you are right that the tale is that if you are not sick its a boy and if you are its a girl…

i am carrying a boy and have not been sick but one time… :)

i wish you the best… and i will say a prayer for you.

  47. QUESTION:
Has anyone experienced morning sickness then went on to have a miscarriage?
I was just wondering cause my morning sickness has finally started and I am 9 weeks prego. Do I still need to be worried about a miscarriage? I want to tell everyone the good news but I want to wait until I know I am not going to miscarry. Because I do not want to go thru that in front of everyone I know.

    • ANSWER:
Hun, our first daughter passed away 2 weeks after she was born due to lung problems but there were no signs leading to this tragedy. We then experienced 3 miscarriages and she had some slight morning sickness but nothing to remark about.

We did have 2 beautiful daughters to follow all this up which are wonderfully healthy and my wife experienced severe morning sickness and hyperemesis during both of these pregnancies and was hospitalized numerous times throughout both pregnancies…and the results were absolutely wonderful.

I guess, in summation, morning sickness can occur in the most dramatic and painful ways and you can still have the most beautiful healthy child in the end.

Congratulation and I wish you all the best.

  48. QUESTION:
    morning sickness causing swollen tonsils?
im 9weeks pregnant, for the last month ive been suffering with morning sickness all day everyday,is it normal to get swollen tonsils from this? has anyone else had the same thing?

    • ANSWER:
Are you sure it is your tonsils that are swollen and not your throat? Swelling period is completely normal because of the back up of food and acid into your esophagus..just drink ALOT of water and know that in a few weeks (it stopped for me at 14 weeks) it’ll settle down and won’t be nearly as bad!!

  49. QUESTION:
what else besides pregnancy can cause morning sickness?
I’m 8 weeks pregnant, to me this question sounds dumb but I went to the chemist (drug store) the other day to see if they had anything natural or give advice on what could help with morning sickness. The pharmisist said yes there is something and he thought for a second. He then looked up at me and said ‘do you know what’s causing it?’. I swear it took me 5 complete seconds to reply…’I'm pregnant’. He then had to look in a book to find out whats ok to take for it. I couldn’t believe he asked this question…is he mad or could there be any other reason for it??

    • ANSWER:
he may have just misunderstood you and thought you meant nausea and vomiting in the morning. or maybe he wanted to know if there were certain triggers like smells or certain foods.

i’ve personally never heard of morning sickness for anything other than pregnancy.

I don’t know if you can get them anywhere else, but motherhood maternity stores sells these things called preggie pops that are supposed to be good for morning sickness. i know you can get them on their website too.

  50. QUESTION:
Is morning sickness caused by an “unhealthy” diet?
Someone just told me that.I really don’t think that’s true at all. I try to eat healthy but I still get sick. I’d like to get some other opinions.

    • ANSWER:

End Morning Sickness
