Abreva cold sore treatment is a cream created by the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline for treating cold sores.
It comes in a 2 gram tube and is a white cream with no taste or smell. It is FDA approved and is not a prescription drug. The key to its effectiveness is a 10% Docosanol component which is patented.
The way to use it is to apply it on the cold sore for 5 times a day, up to 10 days. It is not recommended to go beyond 10 days since it would be safer to consult a doctor as the sore is expected to heal within a few days’ time.
While consumption of a tiny amount of Abreva is okay, you should not eat it in large amount because it is meant to be applied over cold sore.
The way to get rid of cold sore with Abreva is to apply a thin layer over the blister or scab, making sure that you totally cover it. Then, allow the area to dry and heal by itself, making sure that you apply the cream every 3-4 hours’ period in a day.
If you wish, you can also apply make-up or cosmetic over abreva. There is no known side effect to this. But, as in everything, always do it in moderation.
