My blood pressure is never high, but since losing weight, it now runs about 90/64. It also drops easily. Can that be the cause of headaches/lightheadedness?

Is there anything to remedy this? Other than gaining weight again, which I sure don’t want to do.

Thanks.

Both answers above are correct. If you eat something and the headache goes away in 30 minutes or so, it was probably low blood sugar. The low sodium/blood volume issue could be related. By way of prevention and management, if you eat a bit you’ll get salt without addidng it – like a piece of fruit, a tomato juice, or cracker. you may find you need to include small snacks and/or beverages in your total food for the day that will keep your blood sugar/pressure up without gaining back the weight. Rather than adding more food, just spread it out and eat more times more so you don’t get blood sugar ‘blips and drops’ during the day. High fiber, low sugar foods like berries, tomato, salad, cucumber, unsweetened yogurt with fruit, hummus with celery or carrots, etc. will keep your blood sugar even without ruining your weight loss.

For headache relief what you can do besides eating something, drinking something – caffeine makes pain relievers more effective in treating a headache. A cup of tea or coffee or a pain reliever with caffeine might speed up relief from the headache.

Sinus headaches are usually associated with a constant level of pain in the forehead, cheekbones or the bridge of the nose, where the sinuses, air-filled cavities, are found. Moving the head suddenly, generally causes more pain to these areas. Along with the sinus headache, there are usually other symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, and a feeling of fullness in the ears.

Only a doctor can diagnose whether your headache is in fact caused by sinus problems, and your doctor may recommend a CT scan or an MRI along with a physical exam to see if your sinuses are blocked and whether this is causing your health problems.

If as part of your sinus problem you have a post nasal drip that causes a tickle in your throat at night, or allows mucus to collect at the back of your throat while you are lying down, you might want to consider raising the head of your bed a little to lessen this occurrence.

The way to treat sinus headaches is generally to treat the symptoms. Antibiotics may be prescribed for the infection, or your doctor may suggest decongestants for you to take. Pain killers are also used to treat sinus infections. However, if the pain continues despite the use of painkillers, then it may be necessary to take corticosteroids to reduce the inflammation.

In some cases, allergies cause sinus congestion which in turn leads to a sinus headache. In this case, it may be necessary to take antihistamines to reduce the symptoms that the allergies are causing, but be aware that this will not stop a sinus headache. You may have to take something else to relieve those symptoms. Again, you should talk to your doctor to find out what is the best thing for you to do in these circumstances.

Now, decongestant medications may be used to help relieve the headaches associated with sinus infections. These drugs work by constricting the blood vessels that cause the headache pain, but do be aware that decongestants can be habit forming.

If you are having many headaches, sinus related or not, make sure you go to see your doctor, and give him or her all the details to help him or her decide what your best course of treatment is for these headaches. And remember to get plenty of rest, eat a good healthy diet, and exercise regularly too.
